I think the older rules are better, these are way too "warhammerish" for me. But it's only my opinion, and I've played only a few War of the Ring battles. It has some good things though: in a skirmish the last turns are usually just killing single enemies here and there and it's mostly just rolling dice. No big tactics or anything, if you don't do it a few turns before...

I love all gw lotr games! They are so awesome in terms of scenery and models. They also look very cool in large numbers but unfortunately it is not very popular in Australia. But once again Gw is awesome!

Can' t wait for a second edition of the rules to come out and hopefully someone sane would've written them. The first edition of the rules are far too biased on the side of evil armies, with the ringwraiths being the biggest joke of all.

@BigMrFirebird i've got the rulebook, and believe me, the rules are fair this time. As for the Ringwraiths, they are definelty the best centerpiece for an army, and are quite powerful, not like the stupid ones in the orginal rules.

@MrFunnychops1 Though I agree with most of what you've said, I think the rules are unbalanced. Ringwraiths are massively powerful for 125pts compared to just about anything else. I defy anyone without ringwraiths to try and beat an army with Khamul and the Betrayer in it. This is because Matt Ward (author) admitted he likes them and the Fallen Realms army. Which explains why Fallen Realms troops are relatively powerful, but cheap.

i`v started to colect an army of gondor for about 2 and a half month ago and now i have over 1500 gondorian warriors, 100 dol amroth cavalry, 300 men-at-arms, all heroes of gondor , 500 numenor worriors, and 867 men of the fiefdoms (dol amroth not included). I also got an pretty big army of evil: 1000 orcs, 500 easterlings, 100 kataprakhts, 10 war mumaks of harad, 878 haradrims 300 kandish warriors, and 287 umbar... now im almost broke....try to compete with that hahaha nice video!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maby you can help me. i have played Lord of the rings miniatures for many years and know the old rules very well, what is it that makes War of the rings better? i liked that all the models could move separate and not was forced to move in groups. i don't know if i shal begin on play war of the ring, so please tell me what it is that makes the new rules better :)

Generally it's rules are simple but working. You need to pay attention in Move phase. Archers want to shoot flanks of the enemy, becouse of the lower defense, pikemans want to keep their front to chargers, formations want to move close enough to charge, but still be far enough so they are not charged by Heroic Charge.

Heroes also work differently, as they must join units. They can't attack, but they buff them instead. You get to use their Fight, Courage and some special rules etc.

Also, combats are simple to work out, but are still better than at other games. Monsters attack first, then cavalry and lastly infantry. Only one dice is rolled, to-hit. Every hit causes wound. You get extra attacks frm charging, better fight value, supporting companies (basically companies that are not in base contact with enemy).

If you lose combat, you don't have to worry to lose your "eggbasket" formation, as in FB. If you lose combat, you might become disordered, lose more guys or nothing

As for magic, spells are awesome. Mastery Level indicates how many spells you can cast in a turn, for single models, mastery is from 1(shamans) to 5(Sauron). Some formations can even have mastery of 10! Such as Five Wizards. First spell is cast automaticilly, for following spells you have to roll Focus roll.

Shooting of WotR is not meant to kill everyone. Bows have low str, bu you get lots of arrows to shoot. Perfect way to weaken enemy or drive them back (yes, shooting can drive enemy back)

So what does it all make:

-Upbeat games, whit simple rules

-Not much no-brainers or rules that don't explain all

-You need good tactics, just moving your troops to combat leads to your defeat

-Heroes and might are important, you can change course of game with them, if used correctly

-Legendary formations and monsters are cool :)

Well, your Aragorn can still fight his way through orcs, as he gives +2 to-hit for his formations and f7 for his company. And you can always use legendery formations, such as The Fellowship, White Counsil, Three Hunters, Nine are abroad (All nine nazguls)

Painted miniatures can look really cool but i wish they'd just issue some factory line pre-painted plastic models so one can just jump right into playing the actual game.

Painting a figure and having it look decent takes a lot of time and effort and i dont have that time and i'd rather have a not great looking but factory pre-painted figure than play the game with plain unpainted plastic figures.

I play in the biggest lotr min club in canada and I go to g day every year in toronto so this war of the ring is going to be crazy up here imagine the games day battles they have!!!!!!

there arnt going to be many new minis except for the plastic ents which are huge and the new plastic army of the dead. the game is completly different to so completly forget everything you know(no more rolling to win a fight, YEA! you just bash heads in) now the heros mainly give the battalion they are in advatages and such. now you have to charge and you roll a d6 plus your movement to c if you can get to them. calvary are awsome and basically run over any1 in there way (just like in the movie)
