To extend the "shelf life" of your butter/sour cream mixture you can do one or both of the following: melt the butter (real butter; not margarine) and separate the liquid from the butter solids. Discard the solids. They are what become rancid. Then mix with the sour cream as usual. AND/OR add a tablespoon of lemon juice to your mixture. It will lower the pH which inhibits bacterial growth. Even without doing those things, the mixture should last at least two or three days.
@asimov13647 thanks for sharing that idea! its true too..... ive since learned to use clarified butter and even make it the way you said. lasts so long and tastes as great and great for greasing pans and recipes and such. THANKS!

Awesome setup! That's the same type of hiking I do. I use the Hennessy Hammock though. Looks like a great area to hike and fish.
