Though it should be noted my OS is Vista. I know it's a hog, but my emulators run very laggy (PSX, N64 mainly). My question is: does Ubuntu free up that much stuff to make them run that well or is it something else you did?
@terraomastar While Vista is quite the resource hog, your specs are respectable enough that they should be able to emulate the systems reasonably well. You problem may be the emulator settings or the games you are trying to emulate. On the other hand ubuntu does free up a considerable amount of resources vs vista. Further you do not need to replace vista with ubutnu. You can install the linux operating system in windows if you like using wubi.
WHEN I HEARD WE WERE GUNNA B IN A MOVIE I I JUST SAID FFFFFFFUCK YEAH! AND WHEN I HEARD ABOUT THIS I DROPPED MY FAMILY SWORD AND THE BLADE FEŁL OUT AND I RAN TO GAMESTOP AND I BOUGHT 2 WIRELESS DUALSHOCK 3 AND I THOUGHT WIN!
now most recent laptops have a hdmi output now so vga is no longer needed, also normal windows supports emulators too, my partner uses a laptop to play emulators himself with a wireless dual shock 3. when you use windows you get to use zsnes gens plus and project 64 which has more compatibility and so on, so yeah your setup is kind of dated now, but using a laptop is much more easier than jailbreaking a ps3 for homebrew anyways.
@Vo0N83 maybe weird fringe tools like these, but most Linux tools are backwards-compatible to the point of absurdity. For example, dd mentions a compatibility flag that predates Linux entirely. Oo
i can do this in some seconds just put in cable to laptop to tv and start my laptop open emulator do fullscreen done im placing aojdhfpaoughniaspghniosafhgnasfgb llolOlololoLoloOLloLOol
Isn't there some USB flash drive where we can just plug n play, w/ the PS3 controller preconfigured for all the emulator Arcade/SNES/etc. games, that we can just buy on ebay?
@capcom4eva I am aware of an usb adapter for the ps2. For the ps3 you do not need an adapter, in windows you can just use a driver to use the controller wired. It does not automatically configure all the emulators for you. I do not know of any adapter that does that. In ubuntu with the application qtsixa you can use the controller wired or wireless if you have bluetooth.
Great video e-faust! Zerogame 0.52 just came too. This video is great for everyone that updated. I bought a used slim for PSN and still have the 3.15 phat though.
@sparced are you using blights SDL input plug in? To check go to Options - configure then select the plugins tab. Once there make to the input plugin is blights SL input plug in. Let me know if that rectifies the problem for you.
@efaustus9 no i'm on a mac, i can do all that. it's deciding which buttons best suite the n64 layout. after a few frustrating attempts assigning them to suite goldeneye and zelda i gave up. apart from simple games like mario kart 64 i don't think it works well with the dual shock. i'd rather buy a pad but they're all wired.
@sparced The N64 controller is quite unique and creating a one map fits all is difficult. Ignoring the obvious mappings of start, L,R and the D pad. I typically have the c (camera) buttons mapped to the right analog. The right analog is the successor to the c buttons and is a decent map unless you are playing a fighting game. Then I use [ ] for B X for A and L2 for Z.
@websufs you will need the game disk but if you dont have it its not hard to find. Ubuntu linux shown in the video is free. In the description you will find links where you can order a free ubuntu cd or download a ubuntu iso.
@websufs The most advanced ps2 emulator for ubuntu pcsx2 can run Hitman 2 ok provided you have a fairly powerful computer. Hitman contracts & blood money are unplayable w the emulator. You can play all three of the PC versions using wine in ubuntu and get by with a much weaker computer. You can configure the pc versions to use the ds3.
@kevinhawj13 because you need to use a different cable for the sound, what you have to connect to the pc it is a green mini jack or an adaptor and the white and red to the TV or to your normal audio exit
@kevinhawj13 The vga cable by its self will not transmit audio. If you are using the cable shown in the video it has a 3.5mm attached to it for audio. Many hdtvs that have the vga input have a 3.5mm jack as well. Make sure you have the cable pluged into the appropreate jack on your pc and tv. Make sure the volume on your tv is turned up.
Ugh. Ok, so I ended up installing ubuntu on my netbook anyway because everyone swore it would run amazing. It does, and I like it, so whoo hoo. I'm having some issues connecting though, Alot of the time I'll get a window that says "Grand access to...." where the ... stands for a long series of numbers. It continues to pop up even after I say always grant access. I've gotten it to work once and it made the mouse cursor go to the bottom of the screen constantly. I tried installing the thing...
@UploadedL@UploadedL Is the computer off before you plug in the vga cable? Have you selected the PC input on your TV? Have you checked to see what PC resolution's your HDTV supports in the TV manual? Its good to shut the computer down before plugging in the vga cable. Make sure you have set your computers resolution to one that your TV supports before doing so. Also be sure to have the PC input selected in the TV menu. Once all that is done power the computer back up and let me know.
Goddamn it, I'm still trying to get the dualshock 3 to work with Windows 7. I wish it were that simple. I mean, I COULD install Ubuntu, but I dont want to have to scour forever to find Linux applications for word, photoshop, a media player as good as vlc, a replacement for itunes, etc.
@Patass360 You can install ubuntu inside of windows 7 using wubi which is found on the ubuntu live cd. No worrying about partitioning, no need to find replacement programs for all your favorite windows apps. Just select windows or ubuntu at start up. However you can install many windows apps inside ubuntu using wine (itunes is a no go however).
lol you dont need those stuff SERIOUSLY READ THIS!!!
All you need is a computer, Sixaxis controller connected with usb cable with PS3 drivers for PC (look for it), any regular emulators ur using and find a way to output to ur tv like dvi to hdmi cable or adapter. Sound you can use ur pc speaker or 3mm jack cables. Walla thats all you need. You dont need any premium crap
@spike378 If you look in the description the premium crap I am suggesting collectively costs a total of $13 and the VGA cable comes with a 3mm jack for audio. Almost all computers have a VGA port as do many HDTVs. My method you dont need to "find a way to output to ur tv". It will work for many set ups and the picture quality will be good. You may not mind being tethered to your computer as you play on your tv but I'll spend the $3 to play wireless.
You really don't need some of those stuff if you have a new computer like me I have a Sony VAIO and I just need a HDMI hooked up to the TV and the computer has Bluetooth integrated so just download the Drivers for the Sixaxis control and there you also most emulators are compatible with the Sixaxis.
@xXJEDI007Xx I am sure, but I was going for the lowest common denominator. VGA ports can be found on just about all PCs, on many laptops/netbooks, and is also quite common on HDTVs as well. I mention the dongle in the absence of integrated bluetooth, "3. bluetooth or a bluetooth dongle". The sixaxis bluetooth drivers in linux are excellent the windows sixaxis bluetooth drivers are buggy. My method you can use just about any PC you have kicking around.

Your specs are
CPU: Intel Pentium M 745 (1.8GHZ )
GPU: Radeon Mobility 9700 (64MB)
RAM: 768MB DDR SDRAM 333MHz
My specs are:
CPU: AMD Athlon Dual-Core QL-60 1.9 Ghz
GPU:NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G 1.3 GB RAM
RAM: 3 GB DDR SDRAM

VISTA AND WINDOWS 7 HAS ALL DRIVERS YOU NEED TO USE SIXAXIS
1. FIND THE TWO MATCHING DEVICES IN DEVICEMANAGE THAT
RELATES TO THE SIXAXIS CONTROLLER
2.SHOULD SHOW USB INPUT DEVICE AND HID GAME CONTROLLER
3. DRIVER FOR GAME CONTROLLER IS "DUALSHOCK3 HID
MINIDRIVER(USB)
4. DRIVER FOR USB INPUT DEVICE IS "HID COMPLIANT DEVICE"
ALL CAN BE FOUND ON VISTA AND WINDOWS SEVEN
if connection drops all you do is unplug and replug wire and press button with ps3 logo or untill lights flash
