Some of the commenters clearly have no understand of acting based in The Stanislavsky system or Chekhov's plays. Chekhov invented the concept of subtext and Uncle Vanya is the first play he implimented it in, being his first full length. Also this is a film. Vanya on 42nd street is a FILM about actors doing this play that it turns into it. I have a problem with people who have uneducated opinions.
I actually have a problem with it. These are all actors who are great in films, but they seem to be struggling with stage acting - it seems that the lines make them ACT and acting is better without ACTING, you know? None the less I love the cast, just not in this

This movie holds up over time. The combination of Gregory and Malle do justice to Chekhov, and the cast is excellent. We can ask for nothing more.
