I liked this part in the manga. It was sad, but it was an important moment that puts the differences between Guts and Griffith into very stark relief. Guts was struggling to get inside because he was so worried about his men. Griffith never bats an eye.

I think it's obvious Guts determination is stronger. Berserk is clearly a lot more dark. Naruto's determination is based on trivial stupid things; Where as Guts revenge is based on the closest thing to family to him being slaughtered, his love being RAPED by a damn demon infront of his eyes and causing her to act mentally retarded. He cut off his own damn arm, constantly fights suicidal battles with no chance of victory, though he pulls it off anyways. Much more epic.

I'll defend it. I grew up a bit halfway with Naruto. It's not a top cut choice I'd recommend to anybody, but I'd certainly recommend it to people who are warming up to the idea of anime, and don't want to go for anything as intense as Berserk. THAT, or Guren Laggen.

If I were a newbie, I wouldn't want to start with a series that has a ridiculously huge number of episodes. Besides, if you want to recommend something that would grab a newbie's interest, there are lots of other series that would do the job probably just as well as Naruto without sucking half as much balls. Like, Hajime no Ippo, Kekkaishi, Hunter x Hunter, Trigun, Ghibli films, Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Panic!, etc. Depends what kind of a person you're recommending anime to though.

I won't defend naruto, because you're totaly right, but note that berserk is a seinen anime (as far as I know) so it's more for adults or grown ups, while naruto is a shounen anime meant for kids. So i think both series rock hard, and can't realy be compared. Of course abridged series can do whatever they want, especially one that rocks harder then some actual animes!!!
