If mothman's an alien it may have originated in a higher gravity enviroment than earth possibly more hilly or mountainous, it'd explain its stronger muscles and endurance in our lighter gravity. The wings might just be for gliding between high places, they don't seem big enough for a creature that big to use to fly day to day and most creatures that fly, like birds and bats, lost their arms for wings
