Dear Conor Mullen Oberst, sorry for sounding like some silly fanboy (i am), but i just heard this song for the first time, and basically there are no words for the music you have brought into this world...thank you forever. i know you will probably never read this, and i know most of us true lovers of your music do not know you personally but through your music a connection has been made..so so deeply, we honestly love you with all are hearts and souls. your biggest fan of all time, Rex
i dont care how cheesy it is, but this song just made me finally cry about the girlfriend i still havent cried over and still havent gotten over for months , thaks so fucking much connor oberst
i was so worried when it was going to be connor and the mystic valley band. but, how could i have doubted him and his band. he is gifted as well as his musicians. this song hurts my heart, but in a good hurt. a hurt that takes me to a place where love feels the most real. thank you connor and m.v.b. come back to omaha! and please reproduce more of this CD, its unfair not too.
The only song I know on piano, the only song I'll ever need to know.. this song is absolutely essential to anyone who feels.. or anyone who has lost. Beautiful.
@oliveyou33 It would be really easy. Three chords. In the key of c it would be (beginning capital letter is the chord)---- C: Move your slender fingers help me F:play this song C: Spend another nigh inside this F:rented mansion. G: I love you now I know that F:doesnt matter G: I love you now i know that F: doesn't matter. Then repeat! Hope that helps :)
i want this song to sleep inside my head... stuck... whatever, whatever but not to forget or lose in this busy life, where thoughts are tugging on a short chain made of our prejudices...
Oh, Conor. You always do this to me. I think I've finally found the most beautiful song you've ever written, and I am promptly presented with something like this. I'll never find just one, will I? I hope you're finally at peace.
I reallllyyy wish I had been able to buy the "gentleman's pact" ep!!! and the last bright eyes album is coming out in the fall??
where did you read about that release date, because I read the rolling stone piece you're talking about, but hadn't heard an estimated release time. the end of bright eyes, so upsetting :(
In a June 2009 issue of Rolling Stone Oberst announced that he wanted to "retire" the Bright Eyes moniker and would be making one final album with the band: "It does feel like it needs to stop at some point. I'd like to clean it up, lock the door, say goodbye." The album is planned to release in the fall of 2010 on Saddle Creek Records.
Instead of getting mad at sombody on here why dont you right a poem from your heart and just think about the truth you think you know. And share that as an example. criticism is the opposite of self expression, which assumingly we are all here to appreciate (conors.)
I read further down, and pop does require musical talent. There are Berklee graduates who write the music for pop songs. Maybe if you dropped this notion that mainstream music is compromised of musical retards, you could figure that out. Conor plays guitar, drums, piano and though he hasn't the prettiest voice, has a decent range in singing. This song is one of the exceptions of the mystic river band for me; i prefer mike mogis' direction as far as music goes.
Toffrocks, I agree I definetly prefer Mike Mogis' direction (or production, whatever you will) in music, hence my preference for Bright Eyes records over this. By the way I think you meant Mystic VALLEY Band, not trying to be a jerk, just letting you know hehe.
to criticize your taste of music is wrong of me. preferences are arbitrary and opaque to who a person is. I intended my criticisms to aim at Oberst's music, not the fans. I agree that Mogis is a great producer, and during Bright Eyes' early stage I envisioned greater potential. Also, it is ignorant of me to assume that all pop musicians are inept, which I did not mean to imply. I apologize for all angry sentiment stirred. I did not anticipate it. Oberst is decent; this song isn't so bad either.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
"almost every genre of good music there is"? I agree that the Omaha gang have collectively put out coherent pop tunes, but what genres are you talking about?
the main genre's are classical, jazz, and rock; Conor's only ever performed rock music. . .
I wish he would learn to play his instrument and take on jazz, or even learn piano and take on classical. but pop doesn't require musical talent...
I think what strawcherry meant to say was that Conor Oberst's musical inclinations tend to be diverse. He's done Punk (sub genre of Rock, but can you say it's the same music that Elvis helped revolutionize?) with Desaparecidos, experimented a little bit with Electronica in Digital Ash and nowadays mainly plays Folk-Rock/Country-Rock with the Mystic Valley Band outfit.
Listen to June on the Westcoast then listen to ANYTHING off a Commander Venus album and tell me they're not different genres.
Oh, and Pop? Okay, maybe Cassadaga had a few singy songy tracks and overproduction and First Day of My Life is an outragesly accessible song, but I don't quite think tracks like Neely O'Hara are the type my MTV listening sister would have on her Ipod...
The argument was never whether his music was eclectic or not, we were stating that just because he doesn't bust out with 20 minute John Petrucci guitar solos it doesn't mean he isn't an accomplished musician.
Most great musicians never did more than write great lyrics to songs with no more than basic chord progressions (John Lennon...)
By the way, most Conor Oberst fans aren't fans because we think his music is "eclectic", we're fans because we think it's good.
It seems some fans of Conor suffer from myopia. I think of "most musicians" as the great classical musicians and composers (Mozart, Beethoven, Bach) and the great jazz musicians and composers (Gillespie, Ellington, Coltrane) and even some rock musicians (Hendrix, Zappa); thus, in regard to skill, Conor pales; in regard to egotism, Conor reigns. Even compared to successful pop musicians (Dylan, Lennon), plainly, he is inept.
But these are an eclectic musician's qualms, not the plebs.
Wow, and it seems you suffer from being a pretentious douche, so I'll be on my way now.
And while you're taking yourself seriously using completly ridiculous metaphors and deciding for the universe what a musicians true artistic merit comprises of, I'll be listening to this decent Conor Oberst song (OMG, I don't love everything Conor's made!) because frankly it's starting to grow on me.
Maybe somwhere else you can use your vocabulary to pomp to everyone about how you're the eclectic one.
Do you remember during the election republicans insulted Obama for his diction? They called him, "pompous," and "pretentious." Some people get scared when their ideas are challenged, especially when they are incapable of comprehending the claim of their opponent.
I don't think Conor ever claimed to be a good musician. I'm also positive that most people would say creativity is more important than technical ability.
And some people also don't realize that what they believe is being"open minded" is actually being ignorant and self indulgent (oh noes, like Oberst!) Afterall you're the one that can't wrap your mind around the belief that Conor Oberst is to some a GREAT musician.
I understand your claims man, I just think you come off as a total jerk when you come to a place and ridicule a persons honest opinion, like if you're all the more qualified to make statement about music.
And can you please use another illustration besides the Obama one, it just further displays your arrogance as you're going as far as comparing the defence of an innocent fan of Conor Oberst to the claims made by mainly paranoid Right wingers... not that I give two craps about politics to begin with.
But I don't know, maybe I'm a closeted racist, Christian Fundamentalist and don't even know it yet.
Spat my drink out laughing at Vaipan's last comment. Ta for pointing out that classical and jazz are the main musical genres - where exactly? I've no doubt you spend many lonely nights flipping through jazz mags - just not the musical kind. Conor plays piano -it's the plinky-plonky thing in the background of a plethora of his songs. How exactly are his poetic lyrics and screamingly sincere vocals gonna work over the widdly-triplets of meandering boresome jazz? Can I get a goddamn timpani roll?
Hey hey this arguments over already man, no need to spin this out of control once again. Let's just enjoy our music... and leave Jazz criticisims out of this!
To clear things up, what I meant was that Conor has done many different good genres of music, [i.e. punk, indie, classical, folk...]
I don't really understand where this pop thing came up, but Conor hasn't made a 'pop' album, which I definitely applaud him for, as pop music isn't exactly a great genre in my opinion.
Basically, Conor Oberst is amazingly versatile and good at whatever style he chooses, which I think we can all agree on, right?
conor is bonzer. i don't know what came over me. i've started listening to him again recently. i actually at one time owned nearly every cd by bright eyes (EPs and imports), and both commander venus cds. sold most. BE covers taught me guitar. I would get harassed because of Bright Eyes; I was a Bright Eyes martyr, which makes it all so ironic. Then, I turned 20 and had a quarter life crisis... the memoir of my teens "Emo Life (Teenage Angst)" is coming soon.
I don't know if your trying to like make up your own meaning for a word that all ready exist or what. Bonzer is all ready a word and it has a positive meaning. So using it as an insult makes you stupid. This is a fantastic song.
well, I meant bonzer in just that sense. that for the music they play, the mystic valley band has all their loose ends tied and they sound great. yes, I like listening to young conor croon from time to time. though there's nothing like a good Mingus, Roach and Ellington recording to get me in the mood. I hoped the last comment resolved things. guess not. let not one idiot's (mine) opinion foment you to fits.
i think i just wish conor took up writing poetry rather than being a rock star. if he sublimated his writing maybe he could have been a charging force in literature. . . or another unknown poet. whatev.
Wow that must have been such a moving experience. I can't imagine, I've never seen him show such sorrow during a show before... though I have seen him twice, both times at home in NYC. That is just amazing. Such a sad song and equally sad circumstance to lose a good friend like that. Gives me the shivers just reading your post.
I wonder if he knows how many lives he's saved.

Maybe if you dropped this notion that mainstream music is compromised of musical retards, you could figure that out. This song is one of the exceptions of the mystic river band for me; i prefer mike mogis' direction as far as music goes.

just kidding though.
i'm just not familiar with turntables is all. i'm getting one of my own soon, so i'll learn.
kamibrbe 3 years ago
yeah basically there will be a button you need to press that sets how fast the turntable will spin.
On your record, it will say which speed to play it at (either on the sleeve or on the disc) and once done it will sound fine.
That sounds like the problem your having, you are effectively playing it in slow motion hence low voice :P
Either that or you left the vinyl in direct sunlight and the sound warped...but thats quite unlikely

Conor closed witht this song at the show I went to... It was beautiful. I cried as I watched Conor cry, sitting on the piano bench.
:'( I love him so much.

Damn, Conor was crying? :(( That's make me cry even harder, I'm already crying hard enough just listening to this song.
