See this is proper pop music without interference from simon cowell or louis walsh. Todays pop stars should write their own stuff and not take the easy way out by doing covers of old tunes.
I remember watching this video back in 85 and had it on a VHS compilation in the mid 90's. Cheaply made as it was I found and still find the video really good
Loved this so much. The Circle and the Square was my first album (a cassette haha) when I was 9 or 10 years old and I loved it even though it was a bit weird.
80's was the best decade for music. So many diverse types of music. Like this little gem from 1985. Classssssssssssss. Music to feel good too, and not to take yourself to serously.
@thewelly1973 But the 80s was still full of the most serious music you'll find anywhere. Hardly anyone tried to be 'cool'-but all one had to do was listen to their songs. Most subject matter was covered & it all changed from 1 year to another, Duran exposing the 'Skin Trade, OMD singing Enola Gay & Genetic Engineering, Kirsty MacColl covering the dodgy side of Germany in 'Berlin', Kim Wilde detailing the first whore in the Bible in 'House Of Salome' (no-not Madonna!) & Indians losing their land.
@Nyquest I can;t find it, either. Be great to see the acoustic version. In the meantime I'll just keep re-watching the promo video over and over................I have been singing it all day and it's just in my head all the time! : )
I heard this on Absolute 80s, tonight..........and it brought back so many happy teenage memories. Where are they now? These great one-offs have so much nostalgic value to people for different reasons but I wonder how much the band know how very much they have left their mark?
I listened to this in my car on the way back home from the hospital where my wonderful wife had just presented me with a beautiful baby daughter. That was the most moving night of my life. She looked the most perfect little thing in the world...and twenty five years later she still does.
Dude, i am so tired, i am practically hallucinating, but reading your comment whilst listening to the song nearly brought a tear to my eye :-) Beautiful.
Koncert odbył się 3 kwietnia 2011 godz. 20.05. w program 3 polskiego radia. Red Box w Trójce - wideo z koncertu na stronie PR 3 polskiego radia polskieradio.pl
Red Box did release a second album, Motive, which was not successful. After a very long break they (actually just Simon) released a third album this year, Plenty. Form the clips I have heard, the songs are much less interesting than the ones on The Circle and the Sqaure, with the exception the the opening track from Motive, "Train", which is a killer.
The World Music influence on the first album is largely absent from the later albums.
One of the greatest tracks of the 80s from one of the finest albums of the 80s. What a disaster for music that one album is all we got from Toulson-Clarke and Close. Sill sounding totally fresh and distinctive 25 years on. Compare and contrast with the last decade's fixation with landfill RnB and X Factor contestants.
Isn't a red box something to hold the British budget in, that supposedly would sink if it fell into the water? (That seems to me about as probably as a "water landing" in an airplane, though that did happen last year.)
thanks for posting this! This ran soooo often in German radio in 1985-87, but though he could sing the song by heart, hardly anyone knew the band name!
@Mugfungus Of course, its 1986. By today's standards, music videos like that are crap but at least its simple, fun, and we can all smile to the fact that there is joy in the universe.
I'm 26, the baby aint me though, at least i don't think so "runs off to phone mother and ask" lol!
It's really weird, like although i'm 26, i actually don't "feel" 26 if you know what i mean. Like i look at people maybe 19 or 20 and inside i feel like "they are older than me" and when i buy beer i still get that heart - pumping feeling like i'm not old enough and am going to get asked for id lol! I feel like i stopped at about 15.
great song..First heard this in the 80s and later tracked it down on Living In Oblivion, The 80s greatest hits comp., then ended up buying the album "circle and the square" good album, but nothing as good as this song on the rest of the Lp though
I always wonder about what people are doing after making appearances in video's etc - does anyone know who the baby is at the start of the video and what they are doing now?
@bigcherry99 I am in touch with a family that appeared in the video (the boys and girls in the holed wall) and will ask to see if it was anyone of them!
@bigcherry99 Chinese Baby, from Croyden, all I know! haha. Maybe he/she will stumble upon here one day and make his/her claim to fame! Of course, we would all want proof, so he/she will have to try to re-perform the opening cry ;-)
I recently got 'THE CIRCLE & THE SQUARE' and it's an amazing album...very similar tone to Talk-Talk & Depeche Mode! This just sends shivers down my spine!!
This is one of the stand out tracks from the 80s. The melody is so uplifting it puts you in a good frame of mind every time you hear it. What is a shame is the lack of airplay it receives when compared to the amount of dross that gets overplayed!
i was at a 21st in dublin, birthday boy was deaf, this song came on and the floor packed out and the night was saved, only realising now after 24 years that the video had a sign language person it, song is full of memories like a church bell from where you grew up
There was also a brilliant 12" extended remix of this song. My copy disappeared into the black hole of history long ago but there must be one out there somewhere. I can guarantee you'll all love it!
Tears of happiness for watching this video today. Man, was I a fan of Red Box. Huge thanks to Lewis Slade, huge thanks to Youtube too. Awesomeness for the coolest 80's band. Alongside with Classix Nouveaux, this is my 80's imaginary. Amazing. Happy! Beauty in Music and Lyrics.

Circle Square's been re-released?? This is a good track which like others here, reminds of school days, (secondary for me as I'm a bit older!). I prefer Chenko from 1987 which received a huge amount of radio airplay but failed to chart.
Looks like this brings back memories for a lot of people. It was about 19 yrs ago in Melbourne when I first saw the video and heard the song, and it's always been one of my favourites. The song is still played on radio sometimes but I never thought of looking on YouTube for the video until today. Have just watched it now for only the second time ever and it still impresses me. I love everything about it!
Yup, 90% sure. When I interviewed Simon in 2003 am certain he said they just sung it over the existing tune and it fit straight away. Didn't know that it had any Irish drunken reference to it anyway haha.
This is my time fav of 80`s hits, i never get sick of listening to this , brings back so so many memories of the this era. 80`s RULE !!! So much good music .
it is so good that in 1985 they brought cutures together and my memories is a big ethnic culture in 1985 was fun ang gr8 and hope i can 1 day meet one of the seeks i used to hang around with in school ;D
I first heard this track on an 80's compilation album and had never heard it on American radio until I started to listening to internet radio. Why it never received airplay on American radio is beyond me. I read an article where the band said they were dissapointed on how they appeared aesthetically in the video. They thought they looked better than what the camera showed.
Heard this on Radio 2 yesterday and took me right back to a difficult time in my life but inspirational in that it reminded me just how far I've come since then. Great song.
Heard "for America" this morning on the way to work(Israeli radio throws up some surprises sometimes), so decided to check out if any tracks here. This was the favourite song of my first girlfriend
I heard this in solidarity w the striking miners in 85. I think it should be the song for all the Occupy movements around.

Yup, 90% sure. When I interviewed Simon in 2003 am certain he said they just sung it over the existing tune and it fit straight away. Didn't know that it had any Irish drunken reference to it anyway haha.

OMG! I love this song! My father bought it for me when I was a youngster - one of the only things he ever bought me!
