I think he's actually playing a university dean rather than a schoolmaster. Hence the sherry, cigarettes, lectures, Dudley Moore being in casual clothes and DM calling him "Dean."
@windows2042 I agree entirely but 'schoolmaster' was the only simple and short way I could think of to sum it up that still gave some indication of the content (I was lazy, in other words). Thanks for looking.
