In the UK government departments have mushroomed over the last 15 years, becoming more controlling in the lives of ordinary people - and have become extremely corrupt.
It surprises me that no one seems to mind too much.
perhaps it's bc the UK govt. isn't all that big. in fact, out of rich countries, the US and UK have fairly small govt.'s in terms of proportion of govt. budget to GDP. european and east asian countries all have much bigger govt. in terms of percentage of gdp, and they're as happy and prosperous if not more so than americans
I have worked for the government, observing all the cons, the manipulation, the doublespeak, the fraud, the deceptions, the huge waste of public money on jobs & tasks that are not required.
I am most surprised that people are content to keep paying higher taxes & more fines etc for services that they don't receive, legislation they don't need, making their lives more dreary & complicated.
Still, if people don't mind, why should the gravy train be halted?
i know people who have worked for govt. and could say the opposite. you dont prove your case with anecdotes, you do it with the numbers. for example, which sector manages pensions more efficiently? well, social security in the US has 2% administrative costs, and the rest goes to paying for benefits. medicare in the US has half the overhead of the private sector.
and everything you said we could also say about corporate bureaucracies. perhaps private enterprise should be abolished?
some things govt. does better, some things the private sector does better.
the UK govt. has not "mushroomed." the UK has among the lower levels of govt. spending among rich nations, as does the US. all the rest of the rich countries have larger govt's and are doing fine.
So, so Misguided.
These guys do not understand that the 2008 Economic Meltdown was CAUSED by Government Intervention into the Economy!!!
