He was loading for battle carry, not in the middle of an engagement, so the gun was already on safe. That also explains why he wasn't in an all-fired rush to load the thing, though it did appear that the top-heavy design of the round was giving him some trouble.
@Del249 They have some relatively steathy tanks in the sence of noise, and as for your "unreliable armor plating". Ever heard of reactive armor? That can take an rpg no problem.
What a waste. 1 expensive tank round for 1 terrorist, that is overkill. That terrorist must be flattered, for how much the US military spent just to kill him.
its a cheap way. a tank round has a price of a few thousand dollars, while a guided missile such as a javelin or hellfire is a hundred times more expensive.
A HEAT-MP for a target behind hard cover? Naw,...not that expensive. Besides, we're more concerned about accomplishing the mission with what we're given, not looking at how it effects the balance sheet.
I just hate when people think its easy. It gets easier as it goes along just so much to do. Hectic life, not everyone can do it. Drink water n drive on though. PFC Saad 1-64 AR
Guys we are going too far with this. I dont mean to offend any tankers. No I wasnt a tanker myself, I was a field MP. What im trying to say is that it really doesnt take that much intelligence to operate a tank. Most tankers are barely out of high school. You are not engineering the tank from scratch. The engineers that built it actually made it easy for anyone to operate the tank. Please stop acting like its really hard. It is not and basically anyone can learn. You know it.
tankin aint fuckin easy assholes you know how much shit it takes to keep a tank operational you gotta handle the engine for one. then if you know how to do track matinence by all fuckin means but if you throw track dont ask for help then you gotta make sure your computers arent broken you people who think its point and shoot are idiots. it is a complex gymnasium of death. it kills and it doesnt care who it kills so much shit goes into making a tank be a functional tank. training aint a cake walk
Yea man we made fun of the tankers and they made fun of us TOWs but we didnt' want to be them and they didn't want to be us. mad respect for tankers bro. I wouldn't want that job though. Too much freakin work. Tankers really are a grunts best friend. They even let me drive a couple of times Its not as easy as it looks. Sgt Mick 1st Tank BN USMC
I don't think that's a proper HEAT or AP round. I think it's a vid of a test the U.S did on firing buckshot or something slightly larger out of a tanks main gun.
IIRC they were used in the Iraq war with quite some success.
wow whow ever made this is a fag, what does education have to do with this? and the voice edits were juist stupid. And yea we do need an education in order to develop this sort of weaponry
this guy was a fag, the voice edits were gay, but he was reffering to the song another BRICK in the WALL, in the song a line is WE DONT NEED NO EDUCATION. but is was totally gay
I am a fucking gunner. I've been in a combat zone as a loader on days end and I can fucking load a round in 3-5 seconds . . . by the way the guy getting hit by a round with the rifle, it was a fuckin heat round not a can round. dipshit dont fucking make shit up you punk assholes. So beat your fucking faces
You know what else, the crew shown loading the round isn't the one that actually fired the slo-mo shot either. I just thought it might be a little bit more entertaining in this presentation. Oh, btw, the voices you hear weren't actually said at the time of the shooting either. It is referred to as "artistic license."
Tanks with automatic loaders face several problems. They are expensive to produce, they require too many intricate moving parts which can be a pain in the butt to maintain. If it goes down, the tank is useless(aside from its natural ability to crush anything)And last you can always rely on a human loader to do the job correctly and if he dies, there are 1 million others readily available to substitute him within a short time.
there may not be 1 million tankers right now, but 100 million can be trained should the need arise. It isnt rocket science. You either load rounds into a chamber, drive the tank with motorcycle-like controls, look thru a whole for things to blow up or push a button to blow it up. Whats so difficult?
epohnopulse, im not trying to put down tankers at all. I personally knew some of them and it is a very difficult job. They earn their money same or harder than a grunt. But the tankers that i met(excluding officers) have the least basic understanding of high school algebra. the M1A1 has target acquisition and it will automatically adjust for distance and angle of attack with its laser range finder. Seriously, all they have to do is literally point and shoot.
Ever hear of degraded mode gunnery. Probably not. The people you met must have been lower ranking enlisted that spent 24 months in the service. There is more to this job than you know or will ever know, seeing how you were never a tanker. Your summary makes it sound like a simple job. Just "point and shoot," All of the systems you mentioned can fail and you better know how to do all of those tings on your own.
They do have tank cannons with auto loaders. Some Russian tanks use them, and the cannoned version of the Stryker does. A real human is generally faster right now.
@kjoc70 Faster, more reliable, able to help work on the tank if it has mechanical issues, help cover flanks if unbuttoned... no real downside other than needing another box of water and box of MRE's in the bustle rack...
3-5 sec maybe in a training exercise. That time is inconsistent with actual combat engagements. There are many factors that affect this. While deployed, i met tankers that had been posted in a hostile enviroment for several days, some told me that they wouldnt sleep but maybe a couple hours every other day. Fatigue, moral, mindset play a big role in a tanker. Not to say that it couldnt be done, but the automatic loader will put a round in that chamber guranteed within 7 sec, the human cannot.
I agree with you.But I know guys that loaded in Ramadi, who emptied their "Ready Rack" in under 5 mins. Thats 17 rounds in under 5 mins! No auto loader can do that
I'd say that the gunner and commander of that tank need to asses their target acquisition skills. I understand firing 17 rounds in 5 mins if you are fighting tank v tank. But under what situation would you need to fire 17 rounds in 5 mins in an urban combat enviroment?
Wonder what it would do against an armored Hummvee or MRAP.

tank rounds are powerful, thats right, but tanks are also pretty damn vulnerable
Id prefer to be an infantry to a member of tank crew any day (at least you can use stealth and cover, much more useful than unreliable armor plating)
