Jack White is proof of why Keith Relf was a good singer. Jack is decent and could b better, but it is grating on the ears when he does some falsetto. The original is heaven.
@KnightTemplari He is doing that on purpose. He is bending the notes slightly out of tune. It creates a really cool effect when 2 guitarists play slightly out of tune. That is pretty much how the original song is.
its fun to watch these videos of what Jack White was doing 5 years ago, then looking at where he is now. He's every bit as pure and honest now as he was then, although now he seems to finally be recognized for the creative titan that he is. Thank you jack , for being true with your music and still succeeding as a result of it, and being living proof that you don't need to sell out to be heard of.
As far as White's musicianship...I like what he has to offer. But to see the look on his face when Jimmy Page and The Edge ask to see his 7th Nation Army riff in the Documentary *It Might Get Loud" is priceless...Like he's thinking *Really? Im a hack...You are My Heros...*

Sure, I'm convinced. NOT. Spare us.
Didn't like that. Nothing wrong with the guitar playing, but the singing ruined it for me. Perhaps Jack White was trying to put his own imprint on it, but he removed a lot of the tune - and it's an amazing tune. Shame.
Jack White''s a good producer, but not much of a singer of guitarist. Meg, on the other hand, is the worst drummer ever to back up Jeff Beck. I suppose that's something ;-)
Maybe Page, Beck and Collins know and feel a few things some of us don't. Every town in the Western world -- and far beyond -- has a hundred technically hot, fast guitarists without a spark of originality in them. No art. No balls. NO ideas. Do you think someone TRICKED Page, Beck and Collins into playing with Jack White? Doubtful.
@realdancerMN Jack White is not trying to match licks. Matching licks is lame. I call that copying, and no artist that was ever worth anything copied others. Jeff Beck is of a dying breed of carbon copy musicians that I am glad are leaving the spectrum. Sure Beck is a good guitar player, but has no where near the amount of soul that White has nor was Beck anywhere near as innovative.
@bolivar1011 The fact is Jack White has no soul. White is a blues man wanna be. Where do you get your information from. I play guitar and have been watching Jeff Beck since the beginning. He was the first player to use controlled feedback on a recording. He has played with Stevie Wonder. He is considered by all his peers to be the best living guitar player. Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Slash, etc, etc, etc are all fans. Beck is not just good, he is great.
Jack White has no soul!? Do me a favor. Step 1. Listen to Elephant. Step 2. Listen to Slash's last album. Fergie adds an extra dash of "soul" to the mix on that one.
@mussman717word : First, I have a right to my opinion. Second, I have seen videos of Jack White and the White Stripes. Third, If White had an ounce of talent I would admit it. Fourth, Jeff Beck invented more memorable licks than Jack White ever learned. If you like raw blues and not an immitation listen to Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, etc. Go to the source, not some poor excuse of an immitator. Still NO SOUL!
You do have a right to your opinion, so long as you present it as such. Jack White is not an impersonation of the blues, he is influenced by the blues, and punk rock, and folk music of all kinds. Apparently, you slept through the Stooges. Quit trying to push your stupid fucking opinions off as fact. That's all I'm saying. P.S. It's funny how you throw out those names as if I haven't heard of them before. You forgot Skip James, Lemon Jefferson, Son House, WIllie McTell, etc

carbon copy of what? what an dimbulb thing to say. beck is an original, a WIDELY imitated one, & the reason why he is ALWAYS relevant to whatever the year is, is because he's NEVER been happy to rest on his past laurels, & has CONTINUALLY evolved over the years. unlike most, he's gotten BETTER! & soul is his BIGGEST trademark, which is why EVERYONE wants to play like/with him, j white included. sorry, but jackie is the carbon copy here; we've seen a MILLION versions of him over the last 40 years
Who EVERYONE? Sure he is a great guitarist, but talk about a dim bulb, general statement... If I ever become a cheeseball like Beck has become, over manufactured and over rehearsed, kill me. White will go down as far more influential than Beck. period. Let Beck, Steve Vai, and the rest of them keep their small, unoriginal music markets, all technique and no creativity. @badmuddy
@bolivar1011 you're just proving that you don't know what you're talking about. white's music is too non descript to be much of an influence to anybody. & his playing, well, that'd be a zero. you're just an avid fan, & there's nuthin' wrong with that; i happen to like jack white, i just wouldn't call him influential in any lasting kind of way. he doesn't DO anything remarkably diff from thousands before him have. beck is an original, time-tested & proven, decade after decade, & deservedly so...
@badmuddy I have been playing guitar for nearly 20 years. I am also a working singer/songwriter in Austin, and I just graduated with an MBA in Digital Media Management with emphasis on the music industry. I am absolutely not an avid Jack White fan. I don't even own a single White Stripes album. You can say you like about Beck, but don't you tell me what I do and do not know. There are plenty of good musicians in the music industry, but not enough artists. Beck is not an artist.
@badmuddy actually, i'm a REAL fan, which means taking him to task in periods where his playing/writing was contrived & generally awful. flash and bba instantly come to mind. no, i'm NOT the rabid fan that blindly loves EVERY little phrase & fart the man produces, not by a long shot. but stop kidding yourself re the man's undeniably obvious & abundant talent. a clear & incredibly unique personal voice on one's chosen instrument is a genuine blessing undeserving of such a blatant dismissal...
@badmuddy Wrong... because Jack style is not about being a virtuoso or something like, he just like to play the way he feels confortable and indeed his music is very crude and simple but satisfying to the ear, and of course there is no point to compare each guitar player because both are good on their own way, jeff likes the complex and technical style for making music, jack style is more like "Im not the best but this is all about having balls"....as you see , two diferent species.....
Hey I was at this gig. Saw Jimmy Page at the bar in the intermission. Afterwards went back in to the brilliant White Stripes. Jeff beck sounded excellent with them. Great to see it again.
@rodentcafeteria your not a hater, each to their own, its just the organic sound sound has been rare in rock music over the recent years, he is relitivly a novice at guitar but has basically forced himself to get good in a short period of time, that combined with his musical ability makes for an interesting style and something new.

the only thing rolling stone ever had right, was giving hunter s. thompson pretty much all the freedom he wanted. I've never thought of rolling stone as a legitimate music magazine.
for whoever wrote something GOOD about rolling stone... just so you know- when Led Zeppelin was rising, circa 1970, Rolling Stone magazine HATED them. According to it, they would never succeed. Proving Rolling Stone Magazine is, honestly, 99% BULLSHIT
jacks guested with the stones, beck, dylan, parton, l lynn, n produced thousands. i'll take their advice me thinks. n like a blues player he can say so much in 5 note riff than any indie slagg or shredding tit can. how does he take the stripes from blues or country to garage rock yet its obvious it still white stripes. ever since i heard yorba ( first uk full releasei) knew this was my band looooooooove it

Jack White is NOT an awesome musician. He is one of the most overrated and least talented. He has minimal guitar chops; he "made it" because most people are stupid.
the reason this sounds like mud concentrated into sonic waves is because jack plays with just a drummer its hare for him to keep time with another guitarist and a bassist, plus jack and jeffs styles clash very badly
Piss poor, and not just because of the poor quality of the recording. This was a lost opportunity to celebrate a great song with one of its' originators
@smoothfrenchvanilla i'll agree that the white stripes are decent, i am a huge guitar fan ie; Jeff Beck, SRV, Eric C., Eric J., Albert King.............
what i gind that i can dig about the white stripes is that they dont conform, sell out, they play what they want to play in an era of "it's all about the money" not the music
Sorry but Jack White is an awesome musician... true he doesn't use advanced technique, but he's got the ONE AND ONLY thing that really matters in music : Balls (or heart) he plays whit his balls man, he's got the feeling!!!
@totalzombie he's a talented songwriter, his guitar playing is unique in relationship to his songs,he is not an awe inspiring guitarist. i know a large number of 11 year olds that can play his stuff, but i don't know any people that could come up with the whole thing. the total is greater than the sum
@totalzombie well i got to butt in here with this little tid bit jack white is not that great good but not great you cant put him in the same ring with PAGE,BECK,CLAPTON OR IN MY OPINION THE MAN WHO NEVER GETS ANY CREDIT BUT CAN COULD HOLD HIS OWN WITH THEM IS ALLEN COLLINS I NO YOU WANT AGREE BUT HE WAS JUST AS GREAT AS THE OTHERS I MENTIONED
jimmy page of zepplin himself chooses 2 musicians he would put on the same level as himself he chose Jack White and The Edge, the latter being the guitarist of U2, so Page himself thinks Jack White has acheived legendary status...just saying lol
@DELPIEROISGODLIKE10 uh not really, the producer and director I believe picked Jimmy, The Edge, and Jack because they were the three guitarists and sorta personified the three different aspects of guitar playing. Technical skill and production magic from Page, technology and pedals and effects from Edge, and sheer balls to the walls emotion from Jack, though Page still trumps em all in sheer skill and ability
@vinniedurrant yes he is good i admit that but to put him up there with page, beck and my pick is Allen Collins ,southern rockers have never got the credit they deserve i live in Nashville tn where they all come to record or try to make it in the music business and Nashville has got the greatest studio pickers there is,kid rock and Steve winwood live here but they would rather kid not live here lol but come to Nashville and hit the clubs on music drive and Broadway listen to raw talent.peace
@totalzombie The only people who make the illusion that "advanced technique" even needs to be talked about are people like you. Why even talk about it when it doesn't even matter, music is music. Advanced technique are just words.. you can't describe music with "words".
@totalzombie i hate rolling stones list of the top 100 guitarist ive never disagreed with anything more but i do love what they say about jack white they discribe his soloing as a blowtorch haha
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Jack White is just an overblown has been music character, is a good enterteainer but no music genius at all, so please don't give Master Musician Jeff Beck a bad rap because of this one off colaboration with White.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I'd much rather see Jeff play the Yardbirds material with his musical peers, not these two. Listening to this set (I have a good quality audio copy), the first thing that's noticable is Meg's inability to keep a steady beat, and the second is the shreeking quality of White's voice.
to all who think jack white can't play guitar.. see the white stripes under blackpool lights concert and only then comment... and this is coming from a person whose fav. guitarists are jimmy page ritchie blackmore and peter green
Whatever you might think about Jack White not being worthy of performing with Jeff Beck, Jeff obviously likes the White Stripes or he wouldn't be up there with them so quit complaining.
there's a reason Jack White and Jeff Beck are only 3 spots apart on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists ever... try to expand your mind musically before you shit on the White Stripes
I'm not saying I agree with every selection there, but if Jeff Beck thought Jack White was a shit guitarist he wouldn't be playing with him. Go see Jack White in concert and tell me he isn't worthy of that spot... he's unbelievable live and his music is more unique than 99% of the bullshit that is out there.
Believe me, I feel you... It's tough to see them as authorities in terms of music when they have had taylor swift and zac efron on the cover, lol. But every now and then they will have a good piece... and to be honest, it's impossible to make a list of the 100 greatest because artistic styles differ greatly and make comparisons really difficult. But just being on that list means you can rip on the guitar
You really should document your musician's credibility with a better source than Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone is published by Jan Wenner - the man running the R&R HOF. Under his oversight we've seen Run DMC and Grand Master Flash inducted. Rolling Stone has totally lost touch with Rock & Roll, and has been in the business of selling "the next big thing" instead of documenting rock and roll for the past 25 years.
I'm not disagreeing, I'm not a huge Rolling Stone fan either... But again, if you make the top 20, I don't care what magazine runs that list, you're fucking good... period. Again, go see Jack White live and tell me he isn't one of the most talented musicians out there today.
I have no problem when people say, "this isn't my thing"..... but I find it quite ignorant when people say "this sucks" or "this isn't good music"
@purpledynasty i agree totally, it's why you see movie stars on the cover, they've lost cred, if you want know about movies and tv read rolling stone.
@purpledynasty Key word here... Business. How do you make money? You sell people things that they like. Americans have shitty taste, and only listen to things people tell them to listen to. Not to mention the assassination of rock and roll...
The show took place at the south side of the River Thames, London 2002 - called 'Jeff Beck and Friends' and quite a few musicians showed up incl. Roger Walters (Pink Floyd).
And music stands as cool gimmicks. Showbiz, everybody...
They arent onstage with each other to do battle you morons, they share something in common, making music. Not some lip syncing boyband rapping while dancing, making music.
Despite what some people on here may think -- Jack White is one of the most important guitarists to emerge in the last twenty years. You can moan and argue all you want but the fact that players like Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page rate him highly swings the argument I think.
Anyone ever notice that Mr. Beck seems to be the guitarist that all other guitarists want to have a gig with? From all reports, he is the most humble dude - both with other artists and in the studio.

@totalzombie: I absolutely agree with you, Jack White is an awesome musician and he defenitifly has got balls the way he plays. Just awesome.
henkdegroot41 1 year ago
the reason this sounds like mud concentrated into sonic waves is because jack plays with just a drummer its hare for him to keep time with another guitarist and a bassist, plus jack and jeffs styles clash very badly
vthokiefan0007 1 year ago
Piss poor, and not just because of the poor quality of the recording. This was a lost opportunity to celebrate a great song with one of its' originators

what a terrible cover. i knew they were going to butt rock it out.

shitty sound quality but awesome song. btw if you haven't heard rush's version of this song you should look it up. its the best IMO.

to all those people who diss the white stripes, you have no argument now that jeff beck recognizes how great they are
smoothfrenchvanilla 2 years ago 11
@smoothfrenchvanilla i'll agree that the white stripes are decent, i am a huge guitar fan ie; Jeff Beck, SRV, Eric C., Eric J., Albert King.............
what i gind that i can dig about the white stripes is that they dont conform, sell out, they play what they want to play in an era of "it's all about the money" not the music

Sorry, Jack White isn't fit to carry Jeff Beck's guitar case. Don't get me started on that lousy drummer, either.
biglloyddobbs 2 years ago
Jack White is one of the best, if you can't see that your retarded.
MrKyleGee 2 years ago 3
Sorry but Jack White is an awesome musician... true he doesn't use advanced technique, but he's got the ONE AND ONLY thing that really matters in music : Balls (or heart) he plays whit his balls man, he's got the feeling!!!
Bet you cannot even play guitar like Jack!
So shut up and get yourself a life!
totalzombie 2 years ago 50
@totalzombie okay 8 months on and where is jack white now??
JakeModica93 1 year ago
@totalzombie I am 100% with you on this one.no one has ever inspired more than jack.
vinniedurrant 1 year ago
@totalzombie he's a talented songwriter, his guitar playing is unique in relationship to his songs,he is not an awe inspiring guitarist. i know a large number of 11 year olds that can play his stuff, but i don't know any people that could come up with the whole thing. the total is greater than the sum
shinybald36 1 year ago
@totalzombie well i got to butt in here with this little tid bit jack white is not that great good but not great you cant put him in the same ring with PAGE,BECK,CLAPTON OR IN MY OPINION THE MAN WHO NEVER GETS ANY CREDIT BUT CAN COULD HOLD HIS OWN WITH THEM IS ALLEN COLLINS I NO YOU WANT AGREE BUT HE WAS JUST AS GREAT AS THE OTHERS I MENTIONED
maverick10241 1 year ago
@maverick10241
search the movie "it might get loud"
jimmy page of zepplin himself chooses 2 musicians he would put on the same level as himself he chose Jack White and The Edge, the latter being the guitarist of U2, so Page himself thinks Jack White has acheived legendary status...just saying lol
DELPIEROISGODLIKE10 1 year ago
@DELPIEROISGODLIKE10 uh not really, the producer and director I believe picked Jimmy, The Edge, and Jack because they were the three guitarists and sorta personified the three different aspects of guitar playing. Technical skill and production magic from Page, technology and pedals and effects from Edge, and sheer balls to the walls emotion from Jack, though Page still trumps em all in sheer skill and ability
6Rorschach9 1 year ago 2
@DELPIEROISGODLIKE10 you are full o shit
RisingSon011 11 months ago
@maverick10241 Jack white is right up there, easily - screaming delta blues=classic and original.
vinniedurrant 1 year ago
@vinniedurrant yes he is good i admit that but to put him up there with page, beck and my pick is Allen Collins ,southern rockers have never got the credit they deserve i live in Nashville tn where they all come to record or try to make it in the music business and Nashville has got the greatest studio pickers there is,kid rock and Steve winwood live here but they would rather kid not live here lol but come to Nashville and hit the clubs on music drive and Broadway listen to raw talent.peace
maverick10241 1 year ago
@totalzombie The only people who make the illusion that "advanced technique" even needs to be talked about are people like you. Why even talk about it when it doesn't even matter, music is music. Advanced technique are just words.. you can't describe music with "words".

Jack White is just an overblown has been music character, is a good enterteainer but no music genius at all, so please don't give Master Musician Jeff Beck a bad rap because of this one off colaboration with White.

I'd much rather see Jeff play the Yardbirds material with his musical peers, not these two. Listening to this set (I have a good quality audio copy), the first thing that's noticable is Meg's inability to keep a steady beat, and the second is the shreeking quality of White's voice.

He's got something most musicians either lack, or just don't have enough of; SOUL. I can see how Jeff Beck would play with him based on that alone.

Iam not putting him down as a guitarist .
Just dont think he's a great singer .

Whatever you might think about Jack White not being worthy of performing with Jeff Beck, Jeff obviously likes the White Stripes or he wouldn't be up there with them so quit complaining.

sj507 3 years ago
there's a reason Jack White and Jeff Beck are only 3 spots apart on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists ever... try to expand your mind musically before you shit on the White Stripes
bshrules85 3 years ago
And that reason is that the list is made by Rolling Stone.
woodycobain 3 years ago
I'm not saying I agree with every selection there, but if Jeff Beck thought Jack White was a shit guitarist he wouldn't be playing with him. Go see Jack White in concert and tell me he isn't worthy of that spot... he's unbelievable live and his music is more unique than 99% of the bullshit that is out there.
bshrules85 3 years ago 3
I agree. I just hate Rolling Stone magazine.
woodycobain 3 years ago 3
Believe me, I feel you... It's tough to see them as authorities in terms of music when they have had taylor swift and zac efron on the cover, lol. But every now and then they will have a good piece... and to be honest, it's impossible to make a list of the 100 greatest because artistic styles differ greatly and make comparisons really difficult. But just being on that list means you can rip on the guitar
bshrules85 3 years ago
You really should document your musician's credibility with a better source than Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone is published by Jan Wenner - the man running the R&R HOF. Under his oversight we've seen Run DMC and Grand Master Flash inducted. Rolling Stone has totally lost touch with Rock & Roll, and has been in the business of selling "the next big thing" instead of documenting rock and roll for the past 25 years.
purpledynasty 2 years ago 28
I'm not disagreeing, I'm not a huge Rolling Stone fan either... But again, if you make the top 20, I don't care what magazine runs that list, you're fucking good... period. Again, go see Jack White live and tell me he isn't one of the most talented musicians out there today.
I have no problem when people say, "this isn't my thing"..... but I find it quite ignorant when people say "this sucks" or "this isn't good music"
bshrules85 2 years ago 4
@purpledynasty i agree totally, it's why you see movie stars on the cover, they've lost cred, if you want know about movies and tv read rolling stone.
shinybald36 1 year ago
@purpledynasty Why shouldn't Grandmaster Flash be in the Hall of Fame? Hugely influential musician.

Yeah, but not in Rock and Roll.

SuperiorSwagon1 1 year ago
@purpledynasty Key word here... Business. How do you make money? You sell people things that they like. Americans have shitty taste, and only listen to things people tell them to listen to. Not to mention the assassination of rock and roll...

Despite what some people on here may think -- Jack White is one of the most important guitarists to emerge in the last twenty years. You can moan and argue all you want but the fact that players like Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page rate him highly swings the argument I think.
