That´s a centerpiece effect: you hang it in the middle of the ceiling and it will move to the music and then hit little motorised mirrors and mirrorballs (half mirrorballs) if you have a closer look you can see them
nice piece.. it had a little bug(at the strobe part) but overall it was a simple and informative packade. perfect information for the beginner and hopefully you'll continue the series.
great video helped a lot, can you please show us how we can make our own hommade lightting affects, Im sure there are some ways to create cool affect with homemade devices
Also what you call a Dicroic Bulb is much more commonly known as a halogen. The type your refuring to is the MR-16 type of halogen bulb (Halogen being the type of gas used in the bulb) it does infact use a dicroic film on the bulb's built in reflector. Also mentioning the dicroics in the bulbs reflector can be confusing to noobs as the color wheels in these lights use dicroic film to create projected colors.
John, I hope you don't mind if I add my 2 cents here. First off what you call "Typical Bog Standard Color Changer" isn't as typical as you think, I've never seen that before in my life so I have no idea what the heck that thing is.
Are dichroics commonly reffered to as projector lamps? We use cheap projector lamps in low end DJ fixtures such as chauvet insignias. They aren't reliable for their intensity and also dont last very long.
The Insignia uses the same type of bulb that my MX-1s and EFX500 uses. They last very long but you have to realize the MR-16 bulb "ELC" comes in different versions. The ELC-3 lasts ~300 hours, the ELC-5 lasts ~500 hours, and the higher the number at the end of ELC means it will last longer. Unfortunatly the higher the number the less bright the light will be.
I wanted to add, that with most Lighting(DMX) consoles you can pre-program your lights and store them in a cue. Not saying to play alongside light cues the whole gig, but for the mobile DJ playing weddings and parties it could make a difference in your night if you had a few cues stored to go along with a drum roll or some goofy thing that the wedding party wants to do after dinner.
@syntse Keep in mind, Bass is omnidirectional, and thats what the Sound to Light microphone pics up. So your lights will be able to hear the Bass Hits wherever they are.
if you put it on sound to light you can use XLR cables to put them on master slave
(ONLY IF THE ARE the same effects leke 4 moving heads scaners LED pars and more

John, you are like the sweetest dj ever. and you know so much about everything!
One thing I'd really like to learn about is homemade effects, for those of us with smaller wallets.
That would be crazy awesome.

to Varietyshop, to be honest one of the best fx's is the pin spot and mirror ball, very cheep and will fill a room!

thanks dude.
I tried to make my own laser effect with a fast spinning mirror ball and a couple laser pointers.
Very cheap to make, and makes 3 or four erratic horizontal beams. I can't wait to try it with fog.
:D

For the sound controls if DJs usually set up the lights behind them should some speaker be directed to the lights to pick up the sound?
syntse 4 years ago
NO, if you have a sount to light , light you can place it any where and it will still pick up the sound from the speakers.
