I've got this exact gun in a 25-06. Mine is 25-years-old and it is deadly. My longest shot (to date) is 305 yards on a Whitetail last year. I knew the distance, I knew where my bullet would be at 300 yards, and I had a solid rest. The conditions were perfect. When I looked through my scope after the shot, and saw him laying there dead, I wasn't a bit suprised. Very accurate and flat-shooting guns! I own other rifles but I'm not sure why, this is the only one I ever shoot. :)
i shot a remington 700 for years and found an old M77 in 270 and bought it based on reputation. By serial number, it is an older model from 1970's. It is awesom and now the only rifle I take hunting/sport shooting.. CANNOT beat these old rugers
i have one of these..to me there one of the most accurate guns ive shot with HORNADY ammo. i mostly only shoot higher grade ammo for more accurate results i don't really like the wood stocks.BUT i bought me a new stock its like a hard plastic; and i used a light bed liner for a new paint job and wow it has a very rugged lookXD!!
if it hits poa at 300, then he must sight in about an inch and a half high maybe two depending on the cartridge the rifles chambered for, btw i have the updated version of that rifle in .308 and they are beautiful and run flawlessly. people dont know quaility these days but ruger seems to have it right. good vid
@zeek3177 I like wood too. Mine has a gray looking laminated wood stock that fits sooooooo nice. I held a remington 700 sps with a plastic stock that I HATED
i have one. and ur right, you cant get more than 3 or 4 shots before it starts warping the barrel. i also think its a great rifle for the youger generation of hunters, because like u said, it has some excellent saftey features and its very easy to maintain and it wont blow ur shoulder off, but itll still knock down a deer. i got a simmons on mine, but ironically, i have a 30-06 with that same scope
Very attractive gun! I much prefer the blued bolt-handle as opposed to the matte "silver" finish found on nearly all of Ruger's rifles. That one minor detail kind of turns me off of their bolt-action sporters. Could you estimate its date of manufacture?
I have the same model and caliber M77. Got it from my cousin in 1998. Killed my first deer with it at approx. 100 yards in 2000. Found out today that it was made in 1980. Shoots straight still 30 years later. I'm definitely keeping this rifle and giving it to my son.
My first rifle was just like this one only it had a better figured stock. There is no craftsmanship or anything special about them. They were a cheap production rifle but - hey - they are a classic! I do miss the 5 shot magazine capacity though. I can never understand why in the world ol'Bill decided to make the MkII a 4 shot. Also love the old fashion mounts, they are a little lower than today’s offering. Nice vid it brings back memories.
I was left an M77 (.243) by my grandfather. I've never fired it; the last time I saw him fire it I was 12 (now 36). I had to open and lock the bolt for travel on the plane a few days ago, and I'm wondering how the heck you get it back in? For the life of me I can't figure it out.
The part just behind the handle is now twisted & locked, resulting in the stop coming to rest against the safety switch. I haven't figured out how to twist it back to normal position to re-engage the bolt. Help! Thanks
Miller I have the same exact rifle (Ruger M77) chambered 25-06(Mine comes stock with a bull barrell though). I can shoot bullet on bullet at 100 yards all day long with hand loads.
The Ruger M77 was the first rifle I ever bought. Mine is in .300 Win mag. and have had it since I was 16 (25 years ago). If I could only keep one rifle... my M77 would be the one.
love the old winchester model 70 featherweight (not light :-) I had in .270 Would spank a .308 for accuracy darn near for hitting power. Can't beat the way an old smoothed up hunting bolt gun works. I call it a "jeweled" action...but you know what I mean...a slicked bolt.
Great rifle and very accurate. Most of these well built rifles hold their value and rise over the years. Thanks for posting and can't wait to see it on the range.
I got my wife the exact same rifle, with leupold 40mm scope. She loves to shoot it. .270 is a decent deer round. I have a synthetic Remington 770 7mm Rem,magnum with Bushnell 4-12x50mm scope and it's a cannon. we do good bit of hunting and these are very accurate rifles. Hold their value too!

Old model M77 with the tang safety!
Hell yes!
I love mine, a .30-06, too.
Two of my handloads will also shoot five into 1 MOA @ 100 yards.

what is the application of the .270 caliber? is it prefered hunting only or woould this rifle be an acceptible "tactical" choice?
nrexx 1 year ago
@nrexx oh dude the 270 is great for deer hunting, or "tactical" stuff. It's similar to a 30-06 but with a flatter trajectory.

Nice rifle, can you make a shooting video with it shooting the dimes?

@semiautoriflelover I may today. We'll see. This rifle is my father-in-laws pride and joy so we'll see if he lets me shoot it.
