i know what you mean about the jump from Memphis to Berlin. then i recall that Bono and the band are huge Bowie fans. not only are they interested in making changes that fake their audience and keep them interested, but the American sounds shifting into European sounds is a very Bowie move. after Young Americans, Bowie went into Station To Station, Low, Heroes, and Lodger mode. very Euro-sounding. working w/Brian Eno is a striking similarity they share, and recording in Hansa Studios.
