u kno what i was thinking? the UP could disguise the 844 into a NYC niagara. They could have excursions and photo ops for the 844 over here in the east.
@thomasVSstewie There are several major differences between Union Pacific #844 and New York Central #6001, though both are heavyweight 4-8-4's from Alco Schenectady. The NYC put the S-1 Niagaras' headlamps where the UP put the bell; don't know where Niagara's bell was from surviving photos. The S-1's didn't have smoke deflectors, no more than does Southern Pacific #4449 (also an Alco).
@bcschmerker well actually i was thinking of having No. 844 dressed as NYC No. 6010. If they can disguise 3985 into clinchfield 676, why not disguise 844 into 6010?
That one came through Little Rock in 2006 its was a sweet sight it came throgh near my G-parents neighborhood i caught coming under an overpass it was rolling through a row of trees awsome sight the ones thats cool is the Challenger!
i used to live in the omaha area for a few years, and i got to see the locomotive in display in carter lake and council bluffs IA,i took video but unfortunately i lost it ,still i cant forget that day ,when i got to see her coming out from the spur where the huge golden spike monument is and left (i cant remember where it was heading)under its own steam, that is something you got to see to believe, even my dogs sat there and stare at it without barking or anything, like if they knew what was goin on
In the fall of 1996 this engine helped a stalled UP frieght train on archer hill, pulling its own train as well. Taking a diesel into action from the yards would have tied up traffic east and west for hours. But, good old UP 844, pushed the stalled train with its own up the hill all the way to the yards.
This train also pulls occasional frieght service. (No wonder)
I'd love to get over and see these monsters up close.

The late Reed Jackson is waving to the onlookers there from the last car. Rest his soul.

I wish UP would put the whistle the 844 had back in the 1980s back on her. It sounded awsome.
