Two different lap times? 1) Human drivers are not consistent. Lap times can vary wildly even in the same exact car. 2) The driver was very biased towards manual. 3) At the time of the test he still had trouble remembering where to shift the PDK up and down.
@cildni dont forget the PDK has to deal with a lot more weight aswell...so it might be faster on a strait/off the line...but when it gets curvy, 30Kgs are a lot..
It downshifts only when it wants to??? mate.. the PDK protects the engine and transmission from stupid drivers that can't coordinate the simple concept of "push to shift up, pull to shift down" if it does not downshift it's because you are selecting an impossible gear for the speed your going. I own a cayman PDK and the PDK does exactly what you tell it to.
Do not compare double clutch automatic to old school one, todays double clutch automatics are just faster than manual and there are no old school automatic slipping and yes you can control the gears.

Only reason the manual won is cause Jason didn't like the way the shift buttons work, get the paddle option on the new ones and he'd be quicker for sure. Still gotta love manual though, weird for Porsche to not just use the logical standard paddle layout from the start
Bullshit! As a mechanic and a holder of a master technicianship also a qualified teacher of the subject, The auto will ALWAYS BE FASTER! The shifts are PERFECT and are executed at the perfect RPM and torque curve. The shifts even without a twin plate wet, are instantaneous and can shift up to and beyond 15 times that of a racecar driver in a manual. Constant power and perfect shifts with out the loss of clutch operation. When we built top fuelers, we used 2 and 3 speed powershifts wich are autos
lol driver error... but why did they put the shifters directly on the steering wheel? should of been on the column so you can do a full turn and still shift...
@LeetKrew090 As usual a Brit lets his mouth run amuck: 1. Nauru 94.5 2. Federated States of Micronesia 91.1 3. Cook Islands 90.9 4. Tonga 90.8 5. Niue 81.7 6. Samoa 80.4 7. Palau 78.4 8. Kuwait 74.2 9. United States

@emmanuelshipstone you know, there is so much traffic in europe too right? just so u know. and europeans push the clutch in and out too, no problem, if u dont want to push the clutch in and out just leave it in first gear and give it goes, u just don't need to get under 3-5 km/h or you stall.
I am speaking because I want to let you guys know how Relaxing and Fresh Air it Feels to be Driving an Automatic after you've driven a Stick Shift for the rest of your life because somebody sold it to The Population as something Masculine and Cool to drive. From my experience, It's tiring and old technology.
@heartlessvietboy It's all down to personal preference. Some people (like you) find manuals to be tiring and more hassle than reward. Others (like me) find manual gearboxes to be more fun and engaging than automatics. From your comment, I take it you learned to drive on a manual (or began driving one very early). By comparison, I learned on an automatic and have since fallen in love with manuals. I will admit, however, that I wish my car was an automatic when I get stuck in traffic.
People who drive stick shifts are like Girls in Pornography. After several years they realize they haven't been doing something their happy with. Automatic is something you should consider.
@heartlessvietboy This debate has everything to do with one's personal likes and dislikes. For example, NASCAR haters see the sport as boring and repetitive and simply can't find anything interesting about it. NASCAR fans, on the other hand, find the sport infinitely exciting and interesting b/c they personally enjoy the ruthless driving techniques and grueling endurance of the sport. Similarly, you think manuals are tiring, while I find them fun. You say autos are enjoyable, I find them boring.
Would Stick-Shifts be fun without Automatic. Would Automatic be boring without Stick-Shifts? In conclusion, there's really no need for stick-shifts unless its a real sports car or work related. It's not fun at all. Neither is an automatic. Introduction of Automatic Technology: "This is Fun!! You don't have to Shift!!". So which is more fun technology?
@heartlessvietboy Nobody ever said there was a need for stick shifts. They were simply the only technology at the time and have survived ever since because drivers have found them to be enjoyable, a concept you still can't seem to accept. That's how their brain perceives the task, and that is why manuals still exist today, despite their inferiority to faster and more efficient automatics.
When we were young a good number of us liked stick-shifts. When we reach our late 30's a good number of us want to re-convert back to stick-shifts. Stick-shifts will always be cool.
@marshknute You must be daft to say automatics are faster and more efficient than manuals. Ask any car aficionado which one saves more gas or does 0 - 60 faster and you shall be proven wrong.
@2710dw You are thinking about old transmissions. Nowadays, car manufacturers are releasing 6, 7 or 8 speed autos in an attempt to raise fuel efficiency. Their company emissions wouldn't be as high as they are were it not for Mercedes and Porsche's 7 speed, BMW Audi and Rolls-Royce's 8 speed, etc. As for speed, Porsche's PDK shifts in 200 milliseconds (no appreciable loss in power), and the extra gear lets it stay on the power band longer.
@2710dw You are probably thinking about cheaper cars (whose automatic gearboxes only have 4 gears). The Kia Cee'd is a good example of that relationship: the manual's 0-60 and fuel economy are better. In performance cars (like the Cayman in this video), the single or duel clutch tranny's are superior in both aspects. They were designed to do just that (mainly b/c manufacturers have to improve emissions across their whole range of cars).
honestly, i love a good porsche, but i would rather have a porsche more for looks rather than racing. i am really not trying to kill myself and 5 other people on the road
You can't seriously take these times as a guide can you? In the middle of his timed lap with the paddles he takes a timeout to make a funny face at the camera because he doesn't know how to work the paddles properly. C'mon, learn how to drive it first.
Manual comes with a clutch pedal, that can be used for other things than changing gear. If it's slower on the track it would be a lot slower on a hill climb race.
PDK is slower, they invented it because noone wants to have a slow ass automatic, they rather have an automatic that changes gears in 1/100th of a second. If any of you ever owned one, or went to a ferrari etc forum, you'd know things like, revving in neutral then 'paddle shifting' into 1st the car simply wont move or engage it until it deems it to be safe, im sorry a computer controlled system can never beat out a drivers instincts, foresight and feel.
It's obvious here that the problem here was the driver, not the PDK. Paddles are faster & safer since you keep both hands on the wheel but being an old man, I like a standard shifter.
I think that 5th Gear was trying to be like Top Gear with this test. That is, to be humorous and put their opinion forward. But... they... they just failed. As has been said before, I'd like to see how well Jason would've done with the manual if he'd never seen a clutch pedal before in his life. Good luck, mate.
That said, this PDK arrangement sounds much worse than the standard flappy-paddle arrangement, and regardless of which is faster, I'll take the manual.
The new 911 Turbo S comes with PDK too, but now with conventional paddle shifters. I think Porsche has heard enough comments about the "stupid and unintuitive PDK steering wheel buttons."
honestly i do like tiff as a driver and everything, and i know he is a great driver... but this is a bit stupid coming from him. learn how to use the paddles first.
i do drive a car with those stupid paddles (i'm talking about the way you interact with it,) and i got used to it after a couple of hours
@loster88 Um.... that's not Tiff doing the test. Tiff is the one with the annoying voice and long list of racing credentials, this guy is Jason Plato.
I think this segment was filmed for Porsche engineers to see. This is Fifth Gear's attempt to tell Porsche, "the buttons are so counterintuitive, that the PDK car was slower than the tried and true manual. Fit all future cars with flappy paddles if you want to use a PDK gearbox."
@marshknute I recently drove a Ferrari 599, McMerc SLR, Lamborghini Superleggera, R8 V10 and Continental Supersport. They all had flappy paddles and I didn't like any of the gearboxes. In theory, they shift faster than any human can, but they are jerky and awkward to use in town. Despite the unmatched speed of the aforementioned cars, I still prefer driving my 3.0 liter A4 with a 6-speed manual. I'm happy to be 0.5 seconds slower on each shift if I can enjoy a proper manual transmission.
I feel the need to point out that the double clutch gear box is not an automatic like you see in most cars, its set up like a manual using a hydro-mechanical to control the clutches unlike a normal slush box with a planetary gear system and a torque converter. This makes it lighter and much faster with a better range of ratios. From a purely engineering point of view it is the superior technology, that said in the real world the best technology is the one the driver is most proficient at .
Wait -- can we get a presenter who has an IQ over 68? Like, how about someone who's played a console-based video game at least once in the last 8 years, and thus has a proven ability to manipulate buttons.
"THIS CONTROLS SO HARD WHICH IS GO DOWN?" FRANKENSTEIN HAS HARD TO DRIVE CAR!!
Still love my stickshift...couldnt feel it enough and it would just be akward with buttons OR pedals...especially when going around corners the G forces working on your hands and fingers would make it akward to shift properly...the stick is always in its original spot and you can feel it much more...
@ejuoi Yeah, it's ridiculous. You can't say PDK is the shit, if you don't know to handle the paddles. It's like saying Manual is the shit, because you don't know how to change gears ...
there is just something more fun and satisfying about driving a car with a proper manual grear box.... i don't think i'll ever get used to flappy paddles
@ejuoi He did, it's for the sake of making fun of the transmission. It's for television. Jason Plato very much so knows how to use any paddle or transmission. Just look at his racing record...
@rmccarthy21 No, it's not driver error. He knows how to work the car better than you or I. Go look at Jason Plato's racing record and tell me it's any bit of driver error.
why is every company working on dual clutch...now even porsche is into it....why not just spend the money used on research n development of the pdk on a proper manual...leave the conventional automatics to the loser in LA....its not like they give a shit if its got 2 clutch or torque converter.....
because the manual can't get any better because the main fault of the manual gearbox are humans... we are not fast enough to operate the clutch as fast as a computer and having two cluth reduces time lost in neutrals between the shifts... but the PDK is a shitty DSG, not as good as Audi's one but I guess it will get better now that VW owns porsche... but to everyone out there, I still prefer a manual but DSG gearbox will probably replace manuals... just look at what Ferrari is doing...
actually... porsche first used pdk a long time ago... way back in the 1980s, quite a while before VW started messing about with them. it's not like they just got into it.
I say that Manuel is way better than Auto. For one Manuel dont need too much refining, so you can save big cash. 2 They dont need much fluid changes. 3 Manuel gives you more freedom to control your vehicle. 4 Maneuvering is way better than Automatic. 5 wastes less fuel.
It Does seem that the driver had issues with the PDK and that certainly could/did? affect the time...I would say it' could be biased and they need to re-test with a different driver.
PDK is actually a bit faulty because of the electronics controlling the gears still and not enabling the driver to shift down whenever wanted.. however, i would say that audi's DSG would be the future, as it is just like a manual, just that you have total control over it. Look for one of Jason's video in the new TT. he loves the gearbox a lot.
lupowalli, DrewGinsburg... women. I know PDK will put better numbers, but only if it's driven by PDK experts. Plus, who cares? Be a man, get a manual.
I think the manual 'box will be around for a long time... most enthusiasts will prefer the manual 'box even if it is slightly slower, because you have total control. How is a PDK gearbox "better handling"?
All this semi-automatic boxes I believe meant to be more democratic: For those who can't drive very well, so that they still feel good with their sport cars, so manufacturers ensure their cars are still sold.
But the most important thing is that they tend to preserve the mechanics better, specially the engine, so 1) The insurance rates are lower (hence they sell more new cars), 2) they cause less accidents (they sell more new cars), 3) their depreciation is lower (they sell more new cars...)
PDK was obviously slower here because this guy didn't know how to use it correctly. Probably just takes some practice. I prefer manual too but I'm sure flappy paddles still have an advantage on the track or else they wouldn't have been invented.
@andy993 This "guy" is a professional racing driver whos won the World Touring car championship several times. Porsche decided to go against the normal paddle shift convention where you pull both levers, instead you have to push and pull. The problem with paddle shifts is going "down" a gear. Going up gears is fine. Round a track a manuals better due to the issue about going down gears in a semi auto. In a straight line just accelerating going up gears paddle shifts will definitely win though
@caseyryeback1913: What's wrong with going down gears in a flappy paddle? It even rev matches perfectly for you. It's a piece of cake compared to heal-toeing a manual.
@caseyryeback1913 ... porsche are going for the normal/standard paddleshifts...their "button" shifters are realy difficult and has "unnatural" feel into it..
@andy993 ..the problem is that porsche paddles arent the sames as standard flappy paddles like ferrari's ( where left is upshift and right is downshift) but both buttons are actually the same...it doesnt feel "natural" lat all...
Porsche has actually addressed this with thier new 911turbos coming soon and eventualy to all models as well...
@markhangel bmw's "paddles" are even worse, and have you seen the ones on the new ford taurus? eechhh... the corvette's automatic is actually the worst because it has "thumb shifters"
@andy993 i think you are wrong PDK is slower because it has a fixet change time, manualy you can make the change faster, and all thoes things do not change when you want, but when it wants and that is why PDK is slower, i like PDK but it needs to be faster, that is why i dont like automatic geat boxes
@Opsilon89 Is PDK slower than the Ferrari F1 box then? Cause in the Ferrari F430 F1, it changes gears in less than the blink of an eye... 150 milliseconds to be exact = FAST!
@andy993 are u been serious? jason plato is a top touring car racer...i think he would know how to use an everyday car better than any ordinary person..seriously that was a daft comment dude
@andy993 paddles were invented for fat guys to lazy to move their hands and for .. almost wanted to say for ladies but then .. they were supposed to like the 'stick' ?! :)
@nitescuiustin i like how some people think being fat makes people lazy in fact it doesn't im 5"9 or 5'10 im some where between 240 and i work at a tire shop from 8am to 5pm and that's not a lazy job
@andy993 Exactly, I don't think that this guys shitty lap with the PDK means that its slower. I'd rather trust what the engineers (the people who actually build these fucking things) at Porsche have to say. If they say it's faster, than it's faster more than likely.
Autos make driving cars easy as playing Grand Theft Auto IV.

manual is better full stop
EXTREME4YEARSTOCOME 1 year ago
I think this segment was filmed for Porsche engineers to see. This is Fifth Gear's attempt to tell Porsche, "the buttons are so counterintuitive, that the PDK car was slower than the tried and true manual. Fit all future cars with flappy paddles if you want to use a PDK gearbox."
marshknute 1 year ago 2
@marshknute I recently drove a Ferrari 599, McMerc SLR, Lamborghini Superleggera, R8 V10 and Continental Supersport. They all had flappy paddles and I didn't like any of the gearboxes. In theory, they shift faster than any human can, but they are jerky and awkward to use in town. Despite the unmatched speed of the aforementioned cars, I still prefer driving my 3.0 liter A4 with a 6-speed manual. I'm happy to be 0.5 seconds slower on each shift if I can enjoy a proper manual transmission.
marshknute 1 year ago
Probably is faster if there was a driver who knew what he was doing.

every fifth gear video is SHIT! thank christ they don't play this on tv in australia.
andy55055 1 year ago
I feel the need to point out that the double clutch gear box is not an automatic like you see in most cars, its set up like a manual using a hydro-mechanical to control the clutches unlike a normal slush box with a planetary gear system and a torque converter. This makes it lighter and much faster with a better range of ratios. From a purely engineering point of view it is the superior technology, that said in the real world the best technology is the one the driver is most proficient at .
TheSmoig123 1 year ago
Wait -- can we get a presenter who has an IQ over 68? Like, how about someone who's played a console-based video game at least once in the last 8 years, and thus has a proven ability to manipulate buttons.
"THIS CONTROLS SO HARD WHICH IS GO DOWN?" FRANKENSTEIN HAS HARD TO DRIVE CAR!!

Audi paddles are the best.

Still love my stickshift...couldnt feel it enough and it would just be akward with buttons OR pedals...especially when going around corners the G forces working on your hands and fingers would make it akward to shift properly...the stick is always in its original spot and you can feel it much more...

i think he should at least had some practice runs before taking the lap. but none the less manuals are better.
theevoracer 1 year ago
what the fuck? how about you learn the paddles before you take the lap???
ejuoi 2 years ago 78
@ejuoi Yeah, it's ridiculous. You can't say PDK is the shit, if you don't know to handle the paddles. It's like saying Manual is the shit, because you don't know how to change gears ...
Lyfema 1 year ago
@ejuoi this guy, you are advising to, is a professional pilot, touring car champion.
bet against him? I would give more weight to his opinion!
martian577 1 year ago
@ejuoi
there is just something more fun and satisfying about driving a car with a proper manual grear box.... i don't think i'll ever get used to flappy paddles
jumar1281 11 months ago
@ejuoi He did, it's for the sake of making fun of the transmission. It's for television. Jason Plato very much so knows how to use any paddle or transmission. Just look at his racing record...

no effort..... the PDK should be a bit better :(
zig055 2 years ago
yes its slower but its driver error, the guy fails to work the machine correctly
rmccarthy21 2 years ago 3
@rmccarthy21 i agree!
zorkor 1 year ago
@rmccarthy21 No, it's not driver error. He knows how to work the car better than you or I. Go look at Jason Plato's racing record and tell me it's any bit of driver error.

why is every company working on dual clutch...now even porsche is into it....why not just spend the money used on research n development of the pdk on a proper manual...leave the conventional automatics to the loser in LA....its not like they give a shit if its got 2 clutch or torque converter.....
citi0rhythm 2 years ago 3
because the manual can't get any better because the main fault of the manual gearbox are humans... we are not fast enough to operate the clutch as fast as a computer and having two cluth reduces time lost in neutrals between the shifts... but the PDK is a shitty DSG, not as good as Audi's one but I guess it will get better now that VW owns porsche... but to everyone out there, I still prefer a manual but DSG gearbox will probably replace manuals... just look at what Ferrari is doing...
Yanp87 2 years ago
a DSG gearbox may replace manuals, but it will never replace the fun of a manual ...
stronzo5000 2 years ago 6
thumbs up for that! manual is a lot of fun! =)
theevoracer 1 year ago
actually... porsche first used pdk a long time ago... way back in the 1980s, quite a while before VW started messing about with them. it's not like they just got into it.
arseface2000 2 years ago
I say that Manuel is way better than Auto. For one Manuel dont need too much refining, so you can save big cash. 2 They dont need much fluid changes. 3 Manuel gives you more freedom to control your vehicle. 4 Maneuvering is way better than Automatic. 5 wastes less fuel.
Manuel proves to be much better

you talking about a car or a mexican?
highway955 1 year ago
It Does seem that the driver had issues with the PDK and that certainly could/did? affect the time...I would say it' could be biased and they need to re-test with a different driver.
PumpkinMan66 2 years ago
oops... my mistake... it's the golf GTI.... anyways it's the same though.... audi and VW both use DSG
kyaw5800 2 years ago
PDK is actually a bit faulty because of the electronics controlling the gears still and not enabling the driver to shift down whenever wanted.. however, i would say that audi's DSG would be the future, as it is just like a manual, just that you have total control over it. Look for one of Jason's video in the new TT. he loves the gearbox a lot.
kyaw5800 2 years ago
lupowalli, DrewGinsburg... women. I know PDK will put better numbers, but only if it's driven by PDK experts. Plus, who cares? Be a man, get a manual.

PDK is Faster and better handling. The driver ridged the test. Face it the PDK is the future.
DrewGinsburg 2 years ago
I think the manual 'box will be around for a long time... most enthusiasts will prefer the manual 'box even if it is slightly slower, because you have total control. How is a PDK gearbox "better handling"?

All this semi-automatic boxes I believe meant to be more democratic: For those who can't drive very well, so that they still feel good with their sport cars, so manufacturers ensure their cars are still sold.
But the most important thing is that they tend to preserve the mechanics better, specially the engine, so 1) The insurance rates are lower (hence they sell more new cars), 2) they cause less accidents (they sell more new cars), 3) their depreciation is lower (they sell more new cars...)
alernest 2 years ago
PDK was obviously slower here because this guy didn't know how to use it correctly. Probably just takes some practice. I prefer manual too but I'm sure flappy paddles still have an advantage on the track or else they wouldn't have been invented.
andy993 2 years ago 60
@andy993 This "guy" is a professional racing driver whos won the World Touring car championship several times. Porsche decided to go against the normal paddle shift convention where you pull both levers, instead you have to push and pull. The problem with paddle shifts is going "down" a gear. Going up gears is fine. Round a track a manuals better due to the issue about going down gears in a semi auto. In a straight line just accelerating going up gears paddle shifts will definitely win though
caseyryeback1913 1 year ago
@caseyryeback1913: What's wrong with going down gears in a flappy paddle? It even rev matches perfectly for you. It's a piece of cake compared to heal-toeing a manual.
andy993 1 year ago
@caseyryeback1913 ... porsche are going for the normal/standard paddleshifts...their "button" shifters are realy difficult and has "unnatural" feel into it..
markhangel 1 year ago
@andy993 ..the problem is that porsche paddles arent the sames as standard flappy paddles like ferrari's ( where left is upshift and right is downshift) but both buttons are actually the same...it doesnt feel "natural" lat all...
Porsche has actually addressed this with thier new 911turbos coming soon and eventualy to all models as well...
markhangel 1 year ago
@markhangel I see. Makes sense.
andy993 1 year ago
@markhangel bmw's "paddles" are even worse, and have you seen the ones on the new ford taurus? eechhh... the corvette's automatic is actually the worst because it has "thumb shifters"
coolerdude44 1 year ago
@andy993 i think you are wrong PDK is slower because it has a fixet change time, manualy you can make the change faster, and all thoes things do not change when you want, but when it wants and that is why PDK is slower, i like PDK but it needs to be faster, that is why i dont like automatic geat boxes
Opsilon89 1 year ago
@Opsilon89 Is PDK slower than the Ferrari F1 box then? Cause in the Ferrari F430 F1, it changes gears in less than the blink of an eye... 150 milliseconds to be exact = FAST!
andy993 1 year ago
@andy993 are u been serious? jason plato is a top touring car racer...i think he would know how to use an everyday car better than any ordinary person..seriously that was a daft comment dude

bet he doesn't know to shift a gear (whatever the type of gera box)? I would give more credit to his opinion!
martian577 1 year ago
@andy993 But you have to count in the + 60 kg of the gearbox also
davidajgp 11 months ago
@andy993 Exactly, I don't think that this guys shitty lap with the PDK means that its slower. I'd rather trust what the engineers (the people who actually build these fucking things) at Porsche have to say. If they say it's faster, than it's faster more than likely.
