I did have an RX-7 Turbo II (86) that ate corners up though... way better than any Eclipse that I drove.

And by the way - FWD > AWD on the eclipse. WAY better turning radius.

They are RWD because the engine is located in the back. Any car with an engine in the front and a rwd drive train like 300zx or mustang is not a good handling car. The rear is light, once you start taking a turn and accelerate, it breaks out from under you. Especially on wet surface. That would not be as bad for a ferrari or an mr2 because all the weight is in the back, to some degree. Those cars can be nimbler in taking a turn, but also easier to break traction.

Only reason they're not AWD is they do not need to launch hard, also there lighter not being AWD. FWD/RWD vs AWD at 40mph roll, AWD will have no upper hand. You cant really say any type of drivetrain is superior in handling. It all depends on aerodynamics pressure points and suspension.
