this is where top gear wins and 5th gear fails. they proved the hilux was extremely strong, so they knew the limit, stopped and worshiped it by making an altar for it. Whereas 5th gear get the car, go overboard e.g. monstertruck, cannon, dynamite in engine... they killed a car which should be respected for its strength. now they killed it in a test which obviously, no car can survive. shame on you 5th gear. think of it. can ANY car survive a dynamite in the engine? obviously not

You would do better if you crashtested the car under standard conditions so that we could compare safety with more modern cars. This test has no information value at all, because there is no comparison with other cars. We may suppose that the Merc withstood well, but there are no data on how other cars would cope with the exact same treatment. Notwithstanding that such test is not repeateable in an exactly same way.

My 1987 Mercedes 300E is fantastic. Only has 126,000 on it, but I certainly plan on racking up many more. One of the most common problems is the head gasket, but they redesigned it and once you replace it, it won't be an issue for many many years to come.

I drive a 1989 Merc 260E. Very similar to this car [with a smaller engine], but it's a saloon instead of an estate. I do have to say that there are very few things wrong with my car. The things that are wrong are minor and cosmetic. Sure, the engine could use a good tune up, but couldn't most cars? The car is really well built, and the ride is better than any other car I've been in. The technology included in the car is insane if you think of the age, though some things don't make much sense.

This test just tries to show how cars were built back then and - and personally I understand it as the only way how to make cars more environment-friendly, build them again to last longer. There is no point in building super-eco-green-blue-dolphin-s­aving labeled vehicles if they won't last... Props go to Fifth Gear.

i think everyone in the world knows these cars are the best there is in every possible catergory. My dad had one for 6 years and drove it about 300 plus miles a day and not a single issue to note he loved it. It went through a flood and all kinds of strange situations and would stop on a penny. It was a very impressive car. hence why im going to get one myself as there aren't better cars to be honest apart for say a volvo 850 or somewhat
