i remember nights watching this show, when some performance virtualy leaped from the screen, transcending the medium, phenomenon magic,if for this prformance alone, karr holds a place in my heart, and that phenomonon stuff ..dont happen no more, we must have all been a more devine species then.
Okay, I got a tiny nit to pick. Vikki added a bit too much vibrato later in her career, making her sound just a tiny bit like Shirley Bassey (who I HATE). I liked Vikki better when she was a bit younger.
I agree with the comments on both Vikki Carr and Johnny Carson. The Tonight Show had such a warm, relaxed and comfortable feel with Johnny. He always gave the guests the spot light. Jay Leno is always cutting his guests off in mid sentence to get a laugh himself. Conan was even worse and Letterman is stale. I don't think we will ever have a Johnny Carson type again. As for Vikki Carr, what a singer. My mom had her Columbia albums where she would cover the pop hits of the day, they were great
Not to take anything away from her she was awsome but I really miss Johnny Carson which is weird because I'm not old enough to remember him that well but I do!
She has to be one of the all time greatest of the greatest. I saw her in Las Vegas in 1970 when I didn't know who she was. Soon found out.She embodies all that is to be revered in the genre of talented sultry female singers.. a breed that seems to have disappeared.. a real shame.. probably just Celine now, and a few others. Lots of room for new singers of Vuckis talents.
To hm1107g...Vikki did record The Big Hurt as a promo 45 on Columbia Records #45622. The flip side of the 45 is Cabaret (from the Broadway show/movie of the same name that starred Liza Minnelli). The Big Hurt by Vikki Carr was never released on an LP or CD.
@yoryi1960 Do you happen to have the complete 90 minutes of the Tonight Show from 1972 with Vikki Carr and Anthony Quinn? I would offer you 100 bucks to get me a copy on DVD
Ah the days when a singer did not need 20 dancers behind him/her to keep the crowd entertained. All they needed was a good song and a great voice!!! Beautiful!
OMG. What a Beauty. This is the total package. Even today, 37 yrs later, Vikki Carr is even more beautiful and sings just as great!! I know, I've seen her live!!
wow i know vikky carr way back when my aunt used to listen to her music in spanish, i never knew that she was singing and doing shows in English i think this is amazing!! and and she is around all this famouse people wow, can someone tell me more about her please????!!!
Hello Mollyvital, well, besides being a favorite of the White House since the early 70s, she has been continously active in charities and is well know for her philantrophic work. She also started a career in Spanish that took Latin America by storm in the 70s, and really made her a legend starting in 1980. She is adored the world over, and is a living legend, having been bestowed a lifetime achievement Grammy by the Latin Recording Academy. She is truly a gem....
Johnny Carson was pure class. This is when the tonight show was great. Jay Leno would have made this totally racial and boring and non funny. TV late night is crap now.
Give me David Letterman...ANY DAY!!!!! By the way, "The Big Hurt" was written by Wayne Shanklin. Also the composer of: "Jezebel," Primrose Lane, as well as, several other great songs.
@1hiflight That's true! I was a kid in the 1970s and 1980s and remember how great the Tonight Show was with Johnny. It was a treat staying up with my Mom and Dad and watching this great show.
Leno totally fucked it up. I haven't seen it since the mid 1990s it's so bad now.
Doc Severensen is the mystery guy on the end of the sofa. Ed must have been too shit faced to work that night. An unusually rocking arrangement for the band, fine job by all.

Very good song very well done by Vikki Carr. Written by Wayne Shanklin who also wrote Jezebel (the Frankie Laine one) and Chanson D'amour.

Observe how Carson allows his guests to be themselves, to say whatever they
want, without interrupting or trying to look more clever than them. Then compare
him with Conan O'Brien. Carson was the master. I'm proud to claim Vikki Carr
as a native Texan.
