I would like to have seen a match between Apollo and Clubber Lang. That would have been very interesting to see watching Apollo fighting Lang the way he trained Rocky to fight Lang. I think Apollo would have worn him down and then closed in for the kill.

But Apollo was significantly older now and figured he could gain some glory by helping his old nemesis, whom he'd grown to respect over the years, to make a successful comeback.
Rocky had absolutely no chance here because he wasn't as hungry as Clubber Lang, and he didn't take the fight as seriously as he should have while he was training for it as you saw in the gym, and Mickey knew that. Also, Rocky had fear in his eyes and Clubber saw that. And finally, Rocky was too shaken up with his manager laying in the back suffering from a heart attack. He just wasn't comfortable without him in his corner. This whole formula spelled defeat for him.

And he wasn't a fool either, he was, as he just had, as he mentioned in the second movie, a ``relaxed mind`` which means he didn`t worry much about what ordinary people worry so terribly about and that he was more of a positive thinking humanist guy who loves people and doesn`t judge anybody and doesn`t possess hatret.
If Lang was able to keep his temper down he would have had held the title for longer I guess. And I'm not so sure about Lang knocking out Drago due to several reasons:
First, Ivan used steroids which made him unnaturally strong
Second, although Clubber's physical strengh is undeniably incredible, I doubt he had the same heart that Apollo and Rocky had, in order to just endure Ivan's literally ``killer`` punches
Third, Ivan had tactic as well, but Lang just attacked at will with no tactic.

Rocky needed a new smarter game plan to beat this opponent, that's what separates Clubber from the rest. The other fighters, Rocky beat coming straight ahead, taking their best shots first, then coming back and beating them. Rocky in the last fight with Clubber came off first, let Clubber swing and miss, draining him of his strength. If Rocky would've let Clubber come off first, he wouldn't have lasted the first or second round, Rocky would've been tired and hurt.
Of all of the opponents, Clubber Lang was the best. Apollo was very good and had the best skills but he couldn't put Rocky away, Rocky was way stronger and more determined than Creed. Ivan Drago was the strongest, most powerful but he's disqualified in my eyes because he was like an experiment, a freak, plus he was juicing. Lang was raw and powerful, Rocky couldn't beat him straight ahead like Creed and Drago, he had to resort to a "Sugar Ray" style, hitting and moving, letting your hands go.
I almost cried the first time I saw this. What happened to Rocky's cast-iron jaw he had during his fights with Apollo and Drago? He shouldn't have tried to fight Lang toe to toe. He's way too strong
Clubber was a hothead. In the rematch he actually made a mistake by underestimating Rocky. He was right as well, I must say, becaue Rocky was too weak for him but Lang couldn't assume or presume that Rocky could possibly come up with new fighting tecniques, which Rock DID. And that's how he was able to beat Lang. Not by strenght.

I think Mickey strantegy for this fight was a long haul method. To wear down Clubber until he'd out-punched himself to tiredness. But as Apollo and Tony said - he'd only last 7 or 8 rounds. He was clowing around signing autographs and being kissed by women while Clubber was killing himself--alone--in his private training facility. And when Mickey had his heart attack just before the fight was the final nail in the coffin. The scene after the fight when Mickey died and Rocky cried over him was soooo sad.
Guys,there can be no comparison between Drago and Clubber,the Russian's by far the hardest fighter in the whole "Rocky" universe and according to "Rocky: The Ultimate Guide" he never lost from anyone other than Rocky in his entire career,so it's very likely he beat Clubber,Tommy and anyone else later on...

love rocky and love this fight. but it always made me laugh that rocky's and clubber's teams' advice never tallied with what was going in the fight. "defence!" = rocky slugs at clubber. "fight on the inside!" = clubber slugs at rocky from the distance. bless.

No fighters in the Rocky movies have defense they just swing away at eachother, dont get tired, never miss a punch and take over 200 punches a round and there still fine.
*Note: I've heard friends of mine--unfairly, in my opinion--criticize the fact that Clubber hates Apollo. They say it doesn't make any logical sense except to give Apollo motivation in the movie to train Rocky for the second fight. I disagree, Clubber wrongly views Apollo as an Uncle Tom who has lost touch with his "street" roots. Happens all the time in real life among black athletes and black actors and so forth. A few minor financial troubles with Planet Hollywood, but it doesn't matter cause where Sly goes people follow. R3 is the best of them all. The beginning of the show is Epic!

Guys,there can be no comparison between Drago and Clubber,the Russian's by far the hardest fighter in the whole "Rocky" universe and according to "Rocky: The Ultimate Guide" he never lost from anyone other than Rocky in his entire career,so it's very likely he beat Clubber,Tommy and anyone else later on...

love rocky and love this fight. but it always made me laugh that rocky's and clubber's teams' advice never tallied with what was going in the fight. "defence!" = rocky slugs at clubber. "fight on the inside!" = clubber slugs at rocky from the distance. bless.

*Note: I've heard friends of mine--unfairly, in my opinion--criticize the fact that Clubber hates Apollo. They say it doesn't make any logical sense except to give Apollo motivation in the movie to train Rocky for the second fight. I disagree, Clubber wrongly views Apollo as an Uncle Tom who has lost touch with his "street" roots. Happens all the time in real life among black athletes and black actors and so forth. Thumbs up if you agree.

@Jaysin31 On a more serious note: Doesn't the second fight in "Rocky 3," though, show that Clubber is a one-dimensional fighter, and that's his big weakness? He hits really hard and all that but he's not that great a boxer or strategist. So even in a real-life situation he could lose to a weaker fighter based on that. Before George Foreman matured and got smart in his later years that's how he lost to Ali in 1974. Food for thought anyway, bro. Peace.
