You don't know what your talking about, you didn't use any hook's because you NEVER walked with the elephants' you were always on the other side of the fence or they were chained up when you were as close as you could get to the elephants. There is no contact there. And the elephants at the Oakland Zoo were NEVER abused!
I never put down the Oakland Zoo elephant set, it was modeled for the elephants to roam. But if elephants need medical help then what you have to use something like a squeezbox, then maybe put them out with drugs. Don't forget too that you still chain the elephants up at night at the Oakland Zoo so don't try to say all that, they had to be trained to be chained up. Anyway I see the elephants look almost as healthy as they did when they were being trained.
@zoologychic protective contact is bullshit! You dont know what your talking about. A bullhook was made to guide not to hurt. Like everything else in life there are some bad apples. We need more elephant trainers to keep elephants from being extinct, they are slowly being wiped out in the wild.
Wow! I was only commenting on the fact that you didn't even name Oakland's management style in your comment. Any person in the field can name the different management styles. You're the bad apple bringing up the bullhook. I interned with the elephants at Oakland in 2001. When I was there, there was no need for abuse. We just fed the girls to get them to do what we needed (ie lift a foot so we could clean it). And when I was there, the girls were NOT chained up at night!
The Oakland Zoo manages their elephants in a style that is safe for the keepers, public, and elephants. "Handling" an elephant to "walk" it around requires the handler to be dominant over the elephant which results in abuse to the elephant, just like you see in the circus. Oakland Zoo professionals use the only management style that is appropriate for elephants, one where the handler isn't dominant and abusive, no bullhook is required, and everyone is safe.
Whoever designed this elephant set knew what they were doing. But when do the elephants get to explore outside their set (cage) and take a walk. Aren't there any professionals that know how to handle elephants at the Oakland Zoo anymore, guess not. Too bad.
@ElephantSpecialist The Elephants at the Oakland Zoo have about 8 acres of land to roam and forage at will. They can take down trees, graze in the meadows, dust themselves in the dryer areas and take mud baths in the wallows. Maybe ElephantSpecialist should use his bullhook on himself.
@hairymoose1974 there is still occasional commentary on my "markdaycomedy" channel .... i just decided i might as well post rando random stuff on thidm random stuff on this one....

@ElephantSpecialist
Are you really a specialist? They use the system known as protective contact. If you were a speicalist you would recognize it right away!
