Only 27 thousand hits? Really? Not 27 million?!?! Perhaps the most beautiful song TW ever wrote and one of THE most beautiful EVER written. I discovered him as of his first album and have held on tight ever since. Thanks for posting.
Nice job. Love this song and this album. I met Tom Waits in National City at Napoleon's Pizza House back in August of 2004 and got him to autograph one of their menus for me. A real cool cat Tom Waits is.
The first time I ever heard this song was on the jukebox in a small neighborhood bar called "The Newsroom" in downtown Phoenix. A native American girl was playing it while the sound of billiard balls clacked in the background. I'll never forget her or that time in my life. It was special.
juice newton did a great version on her take heart album from 1978. That was the first time i heard this song. It is very haunting because it has harmonica all the way through the song an a harmonica solo. Til this day her version should have been released it would have been a huge hit. I get chills to this day when i hear it it moves me to tears. I like this version today just hearing it for the first time. Juices version is still in print if you can find it it is amazing you will love it
i can not even listen to this with out crying my eyes out. I just left chicago for the west coast 2 months ago and left a beautiful girl there too. why do we do these thing to our hearts ?
@soulrebelmenominee i hear ya man! i done the same 4 years ago and its STILL so hard listening to some of TW's songs.... i even have to think twice before pressing play sometimes! but the emotional rollercoaster is well worth the ride if TW is the soundtrack!!!
40 years ago i fell in love with this song. still love it. tom's an inspiration. ps does anyone know the chords to this, i'd sure appreciate it. thanks
I'm ashamed to say I've never heard this song before or of Tom Waits. I love this feeling on hearing such amazing songs for the first time. The words in this song are simply stunning......and so true.
This is soundtrack of my life Tom Waits speaks the truth love it .

Never saw the East Coast 'til I moved to the West .... Never saw your tears 'til they rolled down your face. Tom Waits: poet extraordinaire.

It doesn't get much better than that. This is one of the most perfect songs ever written and my personal favorite from Tom Waits.

I never saw the east coast 'til I move to the west
I never saw the moonlight until it shone off your breast
I never saw your heart 'til someone tried to steal,
tried to steal it away
I never saw your tears until they rolled down your face.

I never saw the white line, 'til I was leaving you behind
I never knew I needed you 'til I was caught up in a bind
I never spoke 'I love you' 'til I cursed you in vain,
I never felt my heartstrings until I nearly went insane.

I never saw the morning 'til I stayed up all night
I never saw the sunshine 'til you turned out the light
I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long
I never heard the melody, until I needed a song.
