Mariano would cut a glove out of a piece of cardboard. He would slip his hand threw the hole and use it for a glove. He is an amazing person and a wonderful role model for our youth on the fact that hard work and passion lead to success.

As he has said, "Play with whatever you have. Make the biggest effort you can."

He would cut a glove out of a piece of cardboard, slip his hand threw hole for a glove. For the ball he would use old cloths rolled up and wrapped with tape, BUT MOST of the time he would use fishing net from his dad and roll it up tight and wrap it up with tape. Then he had a ball and glove and would always put his glove in his back pocket when finished.

I was told this story about Mariano's first glove many years ago in Panama by friends of his who played Little League baseball with him. There are other stories about the life of Mariano that tell how he became a Hall of Fame player and more importantly a wonderful human being.
