He IS in the right key. When the original recording was mastered the tape speed was slowed slightly resulting in a bogus "key change". When discussing the song, Ray Manzarek refers to the chords in the solo break as Am to Bm (see pgs. 150-151 of his book, "Light My Fire-My Life With The Doors". He should know better than anyone. This video's a pretty good starting point to learning the song. There's also a book that faithfully transcribes the famous solo (but also in the WRONG key).

For the 'scale after D':

Play after the Bm chord (B-D-F#) this chord: B-D-G. Then you go G -> F -> E -> D.

What kind of speakers do you use? This is a low hz sound. If your speakers can play sounds from 50hz you should be able to hear them. For example, the speakers on a laptop will not work.
