one of the most creative and entertaining endeavors on broadway. they don't make theatre like this anymore. RUN to see it... still losing sleep over it...
Saw it in December and it was wonderful. I love the movie and think the writers did a really good job of adapting the story for the stage. The cast is great; how difficult to be both the musicians and the actors. The music (thank you Glen Hansard) is over the top. I will be back in May to see the show ONCE again on Broadway.
I saw it right before Christmas, and I was very disappointed. I thought the male lead was weak-voiced and uncharismatic and the female lead was trying too hard. There were so many choices made by the writer and director that I didn't agree with, I lost count. Stick with the movie.
Once is one of my all time favorite movies (even though I usually hate "cheap digital looking" movies) and I also love musicals (Tanz der Vampire is the best one ever), but I'm not sure about this. Can't really say why, but maybe I'll get the chance to see it someday.
I've heard from several friends who managed to see this Off-Broadway in New York that it's the absolute best thing they've seen for a very long time. A few even went back twice. I cannot *wait* to see it on Broadway.
Really beautiful piece of theatre. Was lucky enough to see it downtown, but can't wait to see how it transfers to Broadway. The music is just incredible.
The actress is oooooooovvvveerrrrrr acting and the accent is weird. The charm of the girl is completely lost in this. This seemed like a good idea to me because I love the film, but the naturalness of the musicians/amateur actors worked better. The guy seems promising though. Ugh the girl is irking me still. The bulging eyes and aggressive tone. Direct, not aggressive and bullish! I hope the best for them, and any musical find a good tone as it develops :)
I hope that everyone that watches this sees the movie first. An amazing movie. Glen Hansard is one of the most talented and incredible musicians in the world.
@alucero333 No no :) I've seen the movie. Many times - it's one of the my favorite films :) I mean - is the story the same in detalis? For example - in this "trailer" to musical we can see a few scenes in the cafe (bar counter, chairs, bottles on the background). I can't remember the same scene in cafe from the film :)
@AdiTorens The way the show is set up, the whole thing takes place in a pub. It has this feel of a bunch of friends hanging out in a pub, telling stories/playing music. When you first enter the theater, the ensemble is onstage playing music and you can walk up to the bar and get yourself a Guinness to enjoy while you watch them. It's all very effective, simple and beautiful. Really, really well done as a translation from movie to stage (I have been a fan of the movie for several years now).
I was lucky enough to snag a front row center seat at NYTW. David Patrick Kelly DESTROYED me before the damn show began. I can't recommend this magical show highly enough. The entire cast was perfection.
I'm interested to see how it translates to broad way. I hope they don't loose the intimacy from ntw's original production. But never the less, I love the music!!!
I love the movie as well and was wary of a stage adaptation, but this show exceeded my expectations. Absolutely wonderful, heartfelt, and just beautiful. Best musical I have seen in a long time...possibly ever.

Saw it in January, you have to leave the movie behind, it's an abstract version, and it's really quite lovely.

Guess I'm pretty skeptical about this. I just can't see anyone but Glen Hansard in this role.
