  • 2 thumbs up for a good idea.....

  • I used my hp desktop monitor as my alternative. Just plug it in the laptop and you have a different screen to look at.

  • hey this chick is pretty smart.. most chicks would say oh no its not working and go spend a bunch of cash getting a new laptop but this chick had a bit of brains and tried to fix it herself, BRAVO WELL DONE FOR AT LEAST TRYING

  • If it is the inverter that is bad... the backlight bulb will flash on for a second when first powered up.

  • @treasurector Sometimes. If the inverter isn't even building a charge then no HV will go to start the CCFL lamp in the bottom of the panel for even a second.

  • @treasurector are you abs sure that it's the inverter and not the bulb if the screen does turn on for a sec. during booting? trying to decide if i need a new inverter or i should jsut buy a pc monitor

  • that sucks

  • Nice; I have used a bright flashlight before and shined it on the front of the screen and deduced the same thing, text on the screen during boot, just no illumination ... good catch .. most ppl assume the whole 'puter is dead when the screen goes dark, but, there may *still* be life in it and just the BL has died! Nice catch.

    .

  • @uploadJ Couple reasons backlighting may not work. 1) on a unit with a pin switch to tell when lid is closed the switch is stuck down or damaged. On magnetic ones it's a reed switch on the mobo and that my be defective 2) Inverter has died 3) video cable is bad (it supplies power to the inverter as well) 4) CCFL lamp is blown - replace the panel or if you are skilled replace the lamp 5) the lamp is grounded/arc'd - replace panel or repair short 6) video circuit on mobo is defective, replace mobo

  • Transparent screen!

  • How did you know it was the back light?

  • @nikelsanddimes it was my assumption based on the fact that my computer was still running but screen could not be viewed without an external light behind it (ie: my lamp) combined with the fact that neither the technician nor i could get the screen light to work after it was originally replaced

  • @jkim809 It is not necessarily the Back Light. It could be your voltage inverter.

  • ok everyone, let's get this straight. the original problem was caused by overheating. dell came and replaced the screen. the backlight didn't work correctly. whether it was the actual light or the inverter, i'm not sure, but nothing i did worked and i didn't want to spend extra money. a 3 yr warranty came with my laptop so soon after, the screen was replaced entirely. ok? happy ending.

  • this does not look like your LCD =) check your inverter.. the inverter is not lighting up the backlight thats alll... =) give it a shot... an inverter costs about 100 bucks... lets see what you come up with

  • man up and replace it yourself.. its a 16 dollar light

  • why would i have done that (a year ago, by the way) if 1: the laptop was still under full warranty and 2: it wasn't my fault that the screen was replaced with a faulty light?

  • it was just a screw that wasnt tight

  • This is not as worse what I have. My LCD is CRACKED!

I did not see it and sat on it. It is pretty bad.

  • The same bulshit happend 2 me on my laptop. i know theres a better cheaper way to fix it without having to pay somebody 150 for a new bulb or something

  • i've to 2 laptops with this prob and the bulbs are around 60 bucks but the old bulbs are tuff to get to, to remove with out braking anything need help plz the laptops are "gateway Solo 9550" and HP pavilion dv2047cl

  • 60 bucks? from where? ive seen bulbs on ebay for like 10 15 dollars

  • yeah ur right i found a site that sold me just a bulb for $9.99

  • Gosh, have u tried reconecting the terminals?

  • I'm not sure what you mean by that? I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the inverter. All is well, laptop is currently functioning, thanks to a new screen.

  • oh, good then.. i feel your suffering...i once repaired someones laptop with the same issue.. by the way, do u have YM or Msn?
