I first came into contact with this piece from listening to Loreena McKennit's Dante's Prayer. Took some research and found that she had sampled this piece. That was years back and I still love this song today.
" 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says:
“Awake, you who sleep,Arise from the dead,And Christ will give you light.” "
This is sung every year on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Holy Week.
Behold, the Bridegroom comes at midnight, and blessed is that servant whom He shall find watching, and again, unworthy is the servant whom He shall find heedless. Beware, therefore, O my soul, do not be weighed down with sleep, lest you be given up to death, and lest you be shut out of the Kingdom. But rouse yourself crying: Holy, Holy, Holy, art Thou, O our God, Through the Theotokos have mercy on us.
@Camenzind23 How could they be the same? The fraternity the Orthodox and Anglicans shared in America never went anywhere. Only an English Anglican could be "tepid" about the portrait of his Christ...
@alyozhik I am Episcopalian, and the community to which I belong in San Francisco is very Eastern ... St. Gregory of Nyssa, though I realize that we are not Eastern Orthodox, we are far moreso in our worship than we are Anglican.
Behold, the bridegroom comes at midnight. And blessed is the servant whom he shall find watching. And again unworthy is the servant whom he shall find heedless. Beware, therefore, O my soul, do not be weighed down with sleep, lest you be given up to death and lest you be shut out of the kingdom. But, rouse yourself crying Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou O our God.
Behold, the Bridegroom comes at midnight, and blessed is the servant whom He shall find watching, but unworthy is the servant whom He shall find heedless. Beware, therefore, O my soul, do not be weighted down with sleep, lest you be given up to
death, and be shut out of the Kingdom. But rouse yourself crying: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God! Through the Theotokos, have mercy on us.
We lost Luis this week, gone too soon. Now he is up with all the others who are sorely missed. Makes me look forward to going and leaving this miserable planet.
@gokuz28 I love the music of the Eastern Church .. however to my ear none is as beautifyul as the Russian. This music makes me feel like my heart is pressed to His .. a taste of heaven on earth.
I lied. It doesn't bring just a tear, I am weeping uncontrollably. Thank you God for dying for me and counting me worthy to suffer with You. You are my only Glory!
There is something very simple and yet compellingly human about this selection. The feeling is difficult to describe properly but this chorus is, at the very least, a profoundly moving piece further highlighted by the uncomplicated but undeniably solemn melody. The emotional peak is reached at 3:28 with a soprano rising above the chorus in a wonderfully symbolic gesture, possibly to represent the bride eagerly awaiting her groom. A most sublime experience :).
Thank you LindoroRossini for sharing this video with me. I miss my home and this music reminds me of it. Happy to discover Lullyste too (I subscribed already). Thank you HARMONICO101.

The angels sing this in Heaven. Makes me weep to hear this because it is so beautiful. Thank you God for giving us this song.

I cannot give you the exact translation (since I do not speak Russian), but I do know the English translation that we sing at our church.

I believe this is Chesnokov, and not anonymous.

@Vierotchka Really? Every recording I've seen has listed it as anonymous. If it's Chesnokov it certainly isn't from the 18th century.
