  • u grew up in deaf culture... are you a CODA ?

  • Have you ever though of teaching SSL (Sign as a Second Language) - basically the Sign equivalent of English as a Second Language. I speak English fluently. As I'm losing my hearing again, I am having an awful time trying to find anyone who can help me improve my sign. I know my Sign is weak (no one to sign with for 20 years makes it VERY rusty), but if no one will sign with me, how can I ever get better? Like you, I love both cultures, but I want to be able to represent my deaf side better.

  • You say you losing your hearing again? You had a cochlear implant done? I live in the hearing world, too. I visit Deaf world two or three times a year. I went to GSD 4 yrs back in the 60s.

You watch youtube, how about signing along with ASL musical youtubes to keep your ASL well oiled? Wherever you live, type in keyword of Deaf Events in your local area or your state area and go to one or more events, just walk through, observe the Deaf World in action. It's like peoplewatching on the beach.

  • I have decided to go without CI (Couldn't afford the procedure even if I wanted it). To be honest, I never minded being deaf. Until I got used to it, it was "weird" having hearing. I'll be fine without hearing, but I need to get stronger in signing so I can communicate properly with other signers.

  • @signwaveri isnt a CI free dont the government pay for them?

  • I love this video! I also am like you I love hearing and deaf culture! I can't live without either one LOL! :] anyway.... good job! Ur personality is jus crazy n awesome!! Love it!

  • Your signing is so adorable lol. I think you would make a great interpreter. You sign very well and it seems like you can hear almost as good as a hearing person when you wear hearing aids. My ex-boyfriend is deaf with CI and he interprets sometimes. I think more hard of hearing and deaf with CI should become interpreters.

  • LOL i love it and i did grow up in hearing culture more than deaf culture but u know what i love both too!! U rock it baby! :) u can do it and i believe in you :)

  • :) it really is an amazing thing to be able to comunicate in diferent languages, and not a lot of people go beyond the "talking" ones. You really have to be proud of that! And plus I'm sure you helped a lot of people to give their first "steps" in asl (including me! ^_^ although I'm kinda lazy now, but I still find it so interesting!)

    You're awsome Gary! :)

  • Why do you feel you wouldn't be a good interpreter? Have you thought of majoring in deaf education and teaching deaf children? That might be another thing you could do...you're very upbeat and sunshiny (just what kids need...that was a compliment, by the way, haha)

  • It just may be hard because he is hard of hearing. He would be fine interpreting words into signs, but sometimes he might miss what was said himself.

  • @Zadinak a person who is hard of hearing cant be a sign language interpreter as my learning center teacher who is a teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing I told her i wanted to be an interpreter she was like how am I going to do that if i have hearing loss?
