It sounds like you have your multimeter in a setting that is for measuring current (amps), leave the red lead in the fused section, black in the com section and dial up to ac volts (not sure what type of meter you have, mine is auto range). I made that mistake when I first got a multimeter, 2 hours later I was back at the store making a return because I blew the internal fuse. I am thinking about getting the $5 cheap yellow meter used in this video to use as a battery meter for my battery bank.

Isn't it safer to connect the common before the hot?
According to the manual it is anyway.
