Sure, I agree, the first part up to the solo..Bono's singing is a bit "different" and not too fitting with the usual live song, but Edge's solo is MAGNIFICENT, -I am saying this as a U2 & Edge fan,but also as a Gibson Les Paul guitarist- the outro is absolutely stunning, with GREAT vocals from Bono with bits from the Doors,Larry going beserk at his drumkit and the Edge pounds out a truly heavenly boombastic drone from his vintage Gibson LP Custom Shop.

@kindaedgy Dude i love U2 and i think that edges solo at this song is the best on U2 songs i'm a huge edge fan too but what i want to say is that this version was absolutely the worst they ever playe.but i never said that i dont like U2 and the solo....also what makes it even worse is the crowd....
@Nicos2597 Ok mate, than this is a difference of opinion, that's all!Cheers and sorry,I did not mean to offend you! But the crowd is horrible, you are absolutely right about that. However, I still DO NOT agree that this is the worst perfomance of this amazing song. Sure, Bono's singing in the first part up to Edge's solo is not his best, but afterwards he makes up for that with an intense (improvised) snippet from The Doors and the Edge's Les Paul sounds like angels to me. But,..opinions differ.
@andrewthedj8 This is one of my fave U2 tracks and I love it when they do it live but this was defo a lack lustre performance and i get that Bono had to be wired up and he couldn't connect with the crowd which he loves to do, thanks for the reply
U2 is my favorite band, but damn Bono looked like such an idiot in the this period. Mcfeisto was his best stage persona in the 90's because it was purposely over the top. He is 1000 times better with the serious, mature persona of the 80's than this stupid sold-out crotch grabbin shit.
Bono Looks Stupid in here. And bono Looks indeed Bored. Makes the Song not good as how it is. I Like the Version of 2001 Much better, Slane Castle and Boston! 360 Tour may be there as well. Bono coolest look was in 1999-2001 i must say. But in 2010 He looks cool aswell. Still a good song.
That stage sucks in the terms of a U2 gig. They are simply too high and far away from the audience. The audience looks like majority doesn't quite get the song's message and music although the performance is just perfect.
@AndreDarkAngel Spoiled is being able to talk out your ass without penalties. I'm sure somewhere down the line you've enjoyed what the USA puts in your mouth. Swallow little man. U2 LOVES THE USA!!!
not a typical u2 stage set-up, and this shows a bit. the crowd are too far away from the stage and although the band are kicking ass and working it hard the crowd are half asleep-(typical yanks though)!! bono needs to be a lot more closer to the "action" as in more recent u2 shows. this period of u2 is very much under-rated, it was a very experimental time for them and personally i think the album "pop" and the subsequent tour were the dogz bawz!! ( totally amazing).
@laboloche THEY AREN'T ASLEEP LAD...its the brilliance of the movie, brilliance and de fookin' band in their face. Seriously, this song is their apex. Go Kerry, Mayo and Meath!
This song has always worked extremely well live..just gotta love that climatic final...Bono actually reminds me of Jim Morrison towards the end of this clip..Awesome!
he's getting old, man, give him a break. no need to compare a man to his prime when he's past it, thats just cruel. especially when its a charmingly overconfident bloke like bono
na, you know, i think he's just- again- grown up, & reached anther level in his life, wher politcs & worldly events & strong opinions of specific things have become as important to him as his music. he's prioritizing differently, as do we all. nd honestly, i think its admirable that despite "growing up" and becoming so ridiculously socially responsible (regardless of if u agree w/ their specifics or not), they can still make quality music. different, and not always to EVERY1s taste- but QUALITY
I was there Randall's Island in Nrew York City....I was pissed because our group came in during the middle of U2's set...they went on so early and they had just played 3 out of the last 4 nights at Giants Stadium in New Jersey...so I think they were pretty tired
wtf? anyone who understands about sound engineering would disagree. the bigger the size of the venue, the bigger problems, harder to manage sound etc... smaller places like this. they still sound good, except on this one- they look kind of tired. bigger venues and U2... you'd like the whole energy there... so do I...but they sound good wherever they are.
as a HUGE U2 fan.. i agree with many of the comments here that this just isn't working.. they need big light shows.. mega stadium sound and production standards to pull this off.. stripped down they don't sound good.. . if this was a cover band they would be getting slammed for a lack lustre wannabe performance.. Bono looks (and sounds) like he doesn't want to be there for the first 3 minutes..they do pick it up at the end though..
I agree with leewelshy-the basic fact is that U2 needs Cape Canaveral soud, a HUGE arena to sound good, medium size space like this with less electronics, they sound kind of bad.
[0:19 - 0:25]: 'Aha aha aha, aha aha aha aha'... What's this??? In my opinion it sounds quite stupid and it's one of the worst versions of this song at all. :(
