  • Katharine Hepburn being a badass and wearing her slacks.

  • I love how Judy's like 'oh shit, pretend you're doing something'

  • Made me cry ...thinking of the glory years of MGM those wonderful movies..those fabulous stars..the stories the sets the lighting the music...we will never see the like of those movies again. Not fashionable now...but eternal..and I hope one day the tides will turn and these stars will be cherished as they so should be x

  • knowing louis b mayer, they were probably ordered to attend this lunch...

  • when STARS were STARS!!

  • They don't tell you everyone who is there. They just name a few. Look for Gene Kelly and Ginger Rogers, and the great Barrymores. This is truly the Old Hollywood, with so much talent. Great. Don't mind my spelling mistakes.

  • LOL @ George Murphy calling two Franks who walked out "Frankie Boy".

  • Just a remarkable moment in time.

  • What I would have liked to see is footage of the annual "stars" pictures they used to take. It would have been fun seeing the stars schmoozing & milling around & being told where to stand during the class picture.

  • Interesting that Buster Keaton's there. I wonder if MGM was thinking of using him as a character actor, or if it was a response to the James Agee LIFE article.

  • @antoniod Actually, they used Buster as a kind of consultant on the movie, In The Good Old Summertime. He choreographed a funny opening scene between Judy Garland and Van Johnson. He may have been in one scene of the movie, not sure.

  • @xander7ful He's in quite a few scenes and he's still good :) worth another watch

  • That was George Murphy as the MC at the beginning, the same George Murphy who went to Washington as a Congressman, long before Ronald Reagan got there.

  • Ava Gardner and Clark Gable in one frame is almost too much beauty and handsomeness for the eye to take in.

  • Ava Gardner and Clark Gable looked so at ease.

  • I wouldn't like to be filmed while I'm eating. They all look so uncomfortable :D But who cares? I would stand that and more just to be there with them.

  • @NatureFillsMe Some of them look uncomfortable, some aren't eating and some are eating without a thought for the camera.

  • It`s fantastic to see such number of super stars, and among them my dear ERROL FLYNN.And to see them at a table having a good time .Good manners at a table are very importanta ,indeed.

  • Love seeing Kate Hepburn - the only woman in slacks!

  • Never again will you see a range of talent this incredible

  • @DebsTasha45 well the second half in the 70's quite a few of them were there..

  • Flynn was probably sitting beside whomever he'd decided to fuck next.

  • So funny that Errol Flynn, from Warner Bros., showed up. This is great although I wish there could have been some close-ups. You wouldn't think that would've been impossible since it was MGM! Ah, I see they did some later. Ava Gardner sat next to Gable. Wow, she looked amazing. I'm glad they brought out my favorite, Wallace Beery, first.

  • @Onlymusical Errol Flynn was there because he was making "That Forsyte Woman" along with Greer Garson, Janet Leigh, Walter Pidgeon and Robert Young. That's why those particular people are dressed in costume :) Just FYI! :D

  • @mrsminiverrose It was so odd and funny that apparently the host didn't announce Flynn. Don't know if that was a joke, I missed something, or what.

  • @Onlymusical That's true - it was amusing to watch, but it is strange since it looked like the announcer was announcing them in order of their seating arrangements and you see later that Errol was sitting "before" Greer...weird lol

  • @mrsminiverrose Flynn was probably sitting beside whomever he'd decided to fuck next.

  • @Onlymusical Hahaha - probably haha. He did seem a little drunk too - a little dazed and confused at what was going on and where he was supposed to be

  • @mrsminiverrose Yes, in '49 he was right in the midst of his legendarily steep physical decline, although it wasn't readily visible yet. He died so very young.

  • @Onlymusical He did indeed. It's sad to think that he basically killed himself. I like him though despite his vices...

  • @mrsminiverrose I'm looking at an ancient paperback copy of his autobiography right now, I found it again a couple of weeks ago. Supposedly, a lot of it is fiction but then who knows? Flynn, like myself, always had to tone down his stories instead of build them up so I don't know. His roommate David Niven cribbed many of the best tales in his own books from Cary Grant's life, probably repayment since Niven, like James Mason, spent a career performing roles that Grant had turned down.

  • @mrsminiverrose Nobody in Hollywood believed that Flynn had played Fletcher Christian in a movie before Gable did, in an Australian picture called "In the Wake of the Bounty" shot long before Flynn made it to America and his first film role, but the movie exists. By the way, when you see an extra in "Mutiny on the Bounty" near the beginning who looks exactly like James Cagney, it actually is James Cagney, in a weird uncredited crossover from Warner Bros. to MGM lasting only a moment.

  • @mrsminiverrose And the studio claimed in their publicity that Flynn was from Ireland when in actuality he came from exotic Tazmania, where they have the real Tazmanian devils, which are shockingly similar in some ways to the cartoon version.

  • @Onlymusical Interesting information. I too have a copy of his autobiography although I haven't been able to read it yet. I did know he was from Tazmania though and about Fletcher Christian - interesting.

  • This what HOLLYWOOD was all about. We will never again see a room filled with the cream of the crop in entertainment. Today we dont have a fraction of the talent that MGM. Judy looked great..

  • Would someone please post the names of these people or point to a link that details this information...I'm not much of a past or current star gazer but I do remember many of these faces from my childhood. A clear listing of the their names would be most helpfull.

    Cheers

  • Judy Garland beautiful simple funny ... the big Star a very legend!

  • Lovely Jenifer Jones was wearing one of the dresses Walter Plunket make for "Madame Bovary"- I love the way Kate Hepburn chat with Lena Horne, both Great Stars- Judy left MGM not so long after this celebration!!-what a waste!!- Eleanor Powell was not here cause she left films in 1942..but she SHOULD be invited!!-she gaves MGM prestige- Where,s June Allyson?-I didn,t see her?- GREAT VIDEO!!- Carlos

  • Just an employee luncheon.

  • Just an employee luncheon.

  • Gosh, such an array of stars. Angela Lansbury and Mickey Rooney are still with us, but so many have sadly passed. These old video are nice to visit.

  • Mr Mayor must be turning in his grave, with MGM all but gone.

  • @Clairecnz yes--he would be-though he took the stvdios with him--he certainly didnt want it to end like this-sold to a las vegas gambler twice--kirk had no interest in the movies or history of mgm-everything from props to lots to land was sold of for a few million-how selfish can you be --buildings and car parks are more important i guess--it was the greatest movie studios ever--now the stars are here on yt--some good, some irritating--but for sure--its all been done and seen before..

  • these were real hollywood stars--mickey rooney is right when he slams of whats left of hollywood--out of that list--angela lansbury, esther williams and mickey rooney are left..all credit for louie b mayer for the galaxy of stars at mgm--and thanx for posting

  • Who's the lady seated to the right of Arlene Dahl and to the left of Donald Crisp?

  • what's the name of the music used here?

  • Were Judy Garland & Fred Astaire midway filming Easter Parade at the time of this luncheon?

  • @TravellerFair I don't think so. Easter Parade was filmed around 1947-48. This might have been around the filming of In The Good Old Summertime.

  • Katharine Hepburn^_^ Spencer Tracey, Clark, Judy, Fred, June.....the list goes on! Debbie wasn't a star yet so I don't think she was there yet was she? She was like 16, 17 around this time which is weird cuz she was a kid compared to them, but she could hold her own when she acted or danced with them like with Fred, Gene, Frank,...etc. I remember she said she hung with the Rat pack in Vegas. They took her under their wings and treated her like a litter sister. THat had to be fun.

  • what a wonderful experience to have a chance to see all those wonderful stars appearing as "normal people" :)

    isn´t it?

  • To: blossom1143 The costume that Janet Leigh wore was from the movie " Forstye Woman" That movie didn't released until 1950

  • That presenter looks soo familiar. Anyone mind telling me who he is? Thanks for posting this up! I love these people.

  • @beyoncetyratina - That's actor/dancer/politician George Murphy, who had just been prez of SAG and went on to be a Vice Prez of Desilu Studios and Technicolor, then went into politics.

  • Aww, Lena Horne looks sad :(

  • Ava Gardner is so cool.

  • This is fabulous.... Gotta love the actors who came in in costume.

1949...Janet Leigh's costume looked like it was from Little Women...year is right :)

  • LMAO @ Buster

  • @GeorgiaRain7 That is Claude Jarman Jr

  • Is there a longer version of this without the editing when announcing the names of the stars?

  • Now that would be a invitation to dinner. Question is where to set? Where would all of you sit?

  • @greenbutterfly101 I'd sit right in between Judy and Fred. <3

  • @poeseloetje :) So would I! I love Ginger and Fred big fan! lol Judy was lovely also

  • @poeseloetje Okay you get Judy and Fred, I'll get Judy and Clark :)

Or Gene Kelly as a second choice :D

  • @greenbutterfly101 I would sit between Errol Flynn and Greer Garson. :)

  • @iheartclassicfilms nice choices :)

  • @JudyGarland38 And I think it's so wonderful that she is sitting by Fred, and also Clark Gable who had known her since she was a little girl singing Dear Mr. Gable to his picture

  • this is so beautful. look at them! so elegantly and charming dressed and they seemed to be so nice and respectful to everybody...i adore them all!

what a time it was :)
