squirrel: hey looke what i found! its long and quite ugly snake:shhhhh! im trying to catch the birdy over there!dont give me away! squirrel:OK! i wont ive u away! snake:kk good get outta here! squirrel:why? snake:i just told u-now get going! squirrel:ok when? snake:IMA KILL U IF U DONT GO AWAY! squirrel:that wouldnt be very nice! snake: "strikes" squirrel: up up and away! snake: wow....... (calls after squirrel) join the olympics! squirrel:eat my fur beotch!
Oh dang he's quick. I remember when i was about 10 years old. I chased a squirrel in my yard and it ran up a 4 foot tree, i then laughed sine the tree wasn't high enough to keep me away. However, the squirrel started to BARK at me needless to say it scared the crap out of me and i ran away haha. true story.
the squirrel smelled the snake- still the snake had the stump staked out and knew the squirrel came around. nearly got him too. if the scent of the snake had not been strong then the snake would have nailed him.
@REDTOP4LIFE Yes, we were able to observe this one personally after spotting on cam. Several others spotted on this and other cams were in the 4 to 5 foot range, but this one was definitely 6' or better. We estimated approx 6' 2-4"
Great video! But I am impressed by the bird who is still tending to his business while all this is going on. If I was the snake I would go towards the bird because clearly he has a disability.
I'm from the Arkansas River Valley and I ran over a timber rattler riding four wheelers that was about 5 feet long. I got it with both tires of my Polaris Sportsman. Scared the dickens out of me. I've seen two more 4-5 foot timber rattlers in Piney WMA as well on camping trips. I'd hate to meet one in the forest one-on-one. My reflexes aren't as fast as that squirrels. Yikes. Awesome video.
We've learned a lot watching these on the live cams here at USeeWildlife(dot)com over the past year. It's nice to see them up close and personal without the risk. I checked our forum posts and it looks like we saw our first ones show up on cam the end of May last year so we should start seeing them again very soon.
i've read that timber's like to rest their heads on stumps or logs and just chill, the log gets used as a runway by rodents and the snake gets alerted by the vibrations through the wood. i just found a young timber last night. first i've ever seen here in texas in 20 years but it was D.O.R. Sucked pretty bad.
Yes, definayely timber. It is in the Ozark Mountains of north central Arkansas. We saw 5 different ones this past Spring/Summer on 3 of the live cams here, but one was by far the largest. We estimated it to be just over 6 feet.
The primary reason the rattler didn't land a hit is, it had to strike around a corner. It's coming from behind the stump, and the squirrel is on top. Therefore, it is not a straight-path for the strike to take place.
Even if the snake had been able to strike cleanly, there is no guarantee that it would have made a hit. The chances would have been increased, but nothing is certain until it is finished.
Very true. We wacthed this one over 10 days and 3 others off and on and witnessed many strikes without success. There is another clip here of this same snake striking at a chipmunk in the open that was about as close as it could be without a hit. It actually touched it and spun it around mid-air. We had to slow it down a lot to verify.
Thank goodness for replay and slow motion. :) It appears the Squirrel knew it was there and what was about to happen. It was sneaking in to take a closer look.
These guys might move faster than a mongoose does (not kidding), that or they know what a bullsnake (what I've seen videos of them taking on) versus a rattlesnake smells like.
But, its fair to say the pit viper didn't get an excellent lock on the squirrel, if it had it may have been another story.
The two have been dubbed the names "Monty "and "Speedy" by our viewers. Monty is still hunting on the Dogwood Mountain cam live right now and Speedy is still out there running around.
that pigeon is a bouse, doesn't even stop eating when the snake strikes

Snakes may be able to strike fast, but apparently squirrels can defy gravity.

Thanks for the info. They stay pretty small here in Pennsylvania. Often they're not much bigger than a garter snake.
