I read that Buddy Holly's widow Maria wanted to charge his home city Lubbuock TX to use his name and likeness in any way. That was an idea that was heavily criticized. C'mon charge his hometown to use his name and likeness on billboards, advertisements, merchandise ANYTHING?! Yeah, she was trippin' a little too hard lol!
Paul McCartney corrected a wrong here. THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY with Gary Bussey did a grave error in leaving out the Petty's and Clovis, New Mexico (my hometown). The story that I hear was that Holly's widow would allow them the story rights as long as there was no mention of either. McCartney saw the movie and decided to tell the story the way it should have been told. To tell the Buddy Holly story without Clovis or The Pettys would be a sin.
I've watched parts 1-10 this is easily the precursor of The Beatles Anthology. Nice job Sir Paul, I guess the only lousy thing about this is that Buddy Holly had to die as young as he did. Thanks for posting
I saw a local theater production of "Buddy" last week, and it was a hoot! Audience was old and gray and White, but they really got into it, and the cast was superb. Buddy's music will endure, to be sure.....
WHile Paul McCartney may be "a legend with a sensitive soul who knows we're he came from" he also owns the entire Buddy Holly catalog, so this is as much marketing as anything.

Fun fact, the Beatles first recorded track was "That'll be the day, That I Die" ... I think the song inspired the Beatles to become a rock group. Buddy Holly has always been by far my favorite oldies rocker.
Excellent program. Great tribute to a truly awesome talent. His music was as beautiful as his soul. God not only blessed Buddy, he blessed us by putting Buddy here on this earth. RIP Buddy,
I was 12 the day the music died...I wanted to be like Buddy..even learned to play an old 4 string guitar some...After the plane crash...I put the guitar away..forever
I watched the movie with Gary Busey for the first time last month, and now i see why he is such a legend in rock. His music is way before my time, but i can see why he had such an influence in rock music.
well done Paul-very interesting and enjoyable- Ive always loved Buddy and this tribute does him justice--to those who read this- show the film to your friends and spread the word-Buddy's music will last to the end of humanity -nobody sings his songs as well as he does
Buddy Holly came out of the American heartland, he was not the product of crap like American Idol....like another young Southern boy from Memphis along with countless great black artists primarily from the American South, they gave us the incredible gift of American rock and roll.

@Tw0Swords Wow, just wow. No where in that wall incoherent ramblings did you say anything that a person above the age of 2 would understand. First off, Paul McCartney had a great voice, beatles, wings, duets, yeah, they were all hits. Next, Lennon was not shot due to an agenda, he was killed by an insane idiot that has the same mental functions as yourself. Lastly, do your research before making stupid comments, the beatles are being revered as the number 1 artists of all time. You sir... suck.
People seem to forget that Paul was a teen and listened to Buddy Holly as did John and George. Buddy was part of the inspiration of John and Paul writing their own material.
Paul McCartney can only dream of being as talented as buddy, basically the Beatles were just a rip of of buddy and his Crickets....Paul is a fake, i love the way he plays his working class roots..working class my fucking ass!!
@bikegirl2 Im laughing at how STUPID your comment is. Buddy was amazing, but the Beatles were also. Paul and the Beatles arent fake, youre just to stupid to understand the talent and the epicness of the Beatles.
I really enjoyed this when it came out, and I found it especially haunting to hear Norman Petty's widow playing the celeste part to "Everyday" at the end of this piece. And don't get me wrong, I'm glad Paul McCartney produced this film, but it also happened to coincide with Paul's acquisition of the Buddy Holly publishing catalogue in the mid-80's. He's certainly no dummy. Thanks for posting! Haven't seen this since it aired in 1985 or so.
@hibob418 Paul aquired the rights in the 70's and produced this film as an answer to the Hollywood produced Buddy holly story which he described as Shite.
Do a search on youtube and you will see that Paul was hosting and performing in Buddy Holly tribute concerts since the 70's for free and for charity.

@hibob418 Why was his acquisition of the catalogue bad? I mean isn't that just how business goes? It's not like he bought it for free, somebody got paid off of it besides him
@dubified89 First of all, I don't believe I said it was bad that Paul acquired the Buddy Holly publishing catalogue (which actually happened in the 70s and I mistakenly tied to this film - The Real Buddy Holly Story was timed to coincide with the release of the first comprehensive CD compilation from Buddy Holly)
Paul says in the opener that he produced this movie to set the record straight - but he certainly stood to gain from a resurgence in Holly's popularity. Nothing wrong with that...
@hibob418 Paul acquired the Buddy Holly catalogue in 1975, not the mid-80s. So this program wasn't exactly an immediate cash-in. Paul genuinely loves Buddy's music and he's been a pretty conscientious caretaker of the publishing.
@privettricker Yeah, sorry that comment from a year ago is up top, I corrected that a while back, and then again just a couple of days ago. And I agree he's been a good steward, since Holly's recording catalog was in utter disarray during the 60's & 70's. Smartest thing Lee Eastman did was put a bunch of Paul's money into publishing concerns. Then Paul advises Michael Jackson to invest in music rights, and what does he do? Buys a huge chunk of the Beatles catalogue. Go figure...
When Ed Sullivan asks Buddy his age, Buddy says 21.
21.
21???
What was I doing at 21? Stuck in college, picking out my boogers, for sure. He was cutting awesome records and I wasn't even ready for the real world yet.
Thanks for posting this. 50 years later, he's still the guy we all credit for inspiring us to create. An astonishing legacy for a 22 year old kid who spent only 2 years making records!
I watched this show when I was a little boy. Used to have a tape of Buddy Holly learned every doggone song on there in order. To this day when I hear certain songs I automatically sing the next song on that tape. It was the masters or something like that.
arcane.bobs: Duke of Rock from XXCultradio just wanting you to know we play 59 yrs of Rock, including this song. Thanks for paying tribute. We think all Rock should be free, and videos like yours keep it that
This video presents a very real side of Paul McCartney, as well as Buddy Holly. Paul isn't a self-servant with an ego problem, he's a legend with a sensitive soul who knows we're he came from--he's never lost that. Buddy Holly, was also a legend too, a supernova that disappeared all to suddenly. Long live the memory of Buddy Holly.
@bkhaskins123 This is what differs Paul McCartney from Michael Jackson. Paul bought Buddys songs out of love and admiration, Wacko Jacko bought Pauls beatles songs to make a profit.
@bkhaskins123 Exactly. Ask to Katy Perry or Britney Spears if they know about Paul Mccartney ( or Buddy Holly), well you know the answer ;). At least Paul mccarteny is a real fan of buddy not like many other artists who only for get popularity (like now with Michael Jackson) say "yeah, he was great" =S
whose macca....and what/what is an american accent? lol
if you where referring to Paul, the only thing I heard was an english accent....the damn bloke must be off his rocker trying to sound yankeeish during tea time!
Sonny, the so right dude to open this classic docu with his own song THE REAL BUDDY HOLLY STORY. And no Crickets, nor Buddy nor any other Good Ole Tx boys would give jack for the crock movie-bio, stageshow farce, or cheap impersonators. As the Tonite Show's late Johnny Carson rightly stated, (paraphrased to include El's buddy), " If life was fair, Elvis & Buddy woud be alive and the impersonators would be dead. "
Just so you know, I'm in a production of said "stageshow farce" and we had Sonny Curtis and Jerry Allison there tonight, and they said they really enjoyed it. I just spent over an hour talking with them about how much they did. I understand what you're saying, but try not to belittle the hard work of good people. Our show is good, and the real Crickets liked it, so I'm proud and honored to be part of it.
Dad had his 45 of Peggy Sue, we would play it all the time when we were jumping on the bed. Charles Hardin Holley would have been 73 today (Sept. 7, 2009). Request a song on your local station in remembrance.
Maria had been expecting their first child when he embarked on that fateful tour... it was one of the reasons he was initially resistant to the idea of doing another tour at that time. She lost the baby after his death...
It's widely speculated that she really wasn't pregnant and used it as an excuse to get more attention. No one close to Buddy(Joey B, J.I., family) knew about this "baby". You would think news like that, everyone would know. But, of course the only one who could prove it died in a plane crash in 1959
That is how they made their living...the money was nowhere near like today...even an established legend like Hank Williams toured the whole year 'round

Paul says in the opener that he produced this movie to set the record straight - but he certainly stood to gain from a resurgence in Holly's popularity. Nothing wrong with that...
hibob418 8 months ago
@hibob418 Paul acquired the Buddy Holly catalogue in 1975, not the mid-80s. So this program wasn't exactly an immediate cash-in. Paul genuinely loves Buddy's music and he's been a pretty conscientious caretaker of the publishing.
privettricker 8 months ago
@privettricker Yeah, sorry that comment from a year ago is up top, I corrected that a while back, and then again just a couple of days ago. And I agree he's been a good steward, since Holly's recording catalog was in utter disarray during the 60's & 70's. Smartest thing Lee Eastman did was put a bunch of Paul's money into publishing concerns. Then Paul advises Michael Jackson to invest in music rights, and what does he do? Buys a huge chunk of the Beatles catalogue. Go figure...

Keith Richards shows up here too, talking of Holly's influence on the Stones. Nice of Paul to invite him.

When Ed Sullivan asks Buddy his age, Buddy says 21.
21.
21???
What was I doing at 21? Stuck in college, picking out my boogers, for sure. He was cutting awesome records and I wasn't even ready for the real world yet.
What a genius.
claudiall 1 year ago
Thanks for posting this. 50 years later, he's still the guy we all credit for inspiring us to create. An astonishing legacy for a 22 year old kid who spent only 2 years making records!
Pure genius.

I watched this show when I was a little boy. Used to have a tape of Buddy Holly learned every doggone song on there in order. To this day when I hear certain songs I automatically sing the next song on that tape. It was the masters or something like that.

@bkhaskins123 so we'll just call u the "soul seer"
Syzygy60 1 year ago
@bkhaskins123 This is what differs Paul McCartney from Michael Jackson. Paul bought Buddys songs out of love and admiration, Wacko Jacko bought Pauls beatles songs to make a profit.
Yellyist 1 year ago
@bkhaskins123 Exactly. Ask to Katy Perry or Britney Spears if they know about Paul Mccartney ( or Buddy Holly), well you know the answer ;). At least Paul mccarteny is a real fan of buddy not like many other artists who only for get popularity (like now with Michael Jackson) say "yeah, he was great" =S

DougPatton1 2 years ago 2
Just so you know, I'm in a production of said "stageshow farce" and we had Sonny Curtis and Jerry Allison there tonight, and they said they really enjoyed it. I just spent over an hour talking with them about how much they did. I understand what you're saying, but try not to belittle the hard work of good people. Our show is good, and the real Crickets liked it, so I'm proud and honored to be part of it.
Premetheus37 2 years ago
I have to agree with you 100% especially the last part about "if life was fair".

Dad had his 45 of Peggy Sue, we would play it all the time when we were jumping on the bed. Charles Hardin Holley would have been 73 today (Sept. 7, 2009). Request a song on your local station in remembrance.

Did Buddy and Maria have any children?
trishamos 2 years ago
Maria had been expecting their first child when he embarked on that fateful tour... it was one of the reasons he was initially resistant to the idea of doing another tour at that time. She lost the baby after his death...
NativeMoon 2 years ago
It's widely speculated that she really wasn't pregnant and used it as an excuse to get more attention. No one close to Buddy(Joey B, J.I., family) knew about this "baby". You would think news like that, everyone would know. But, of course the only one who could prove it died in a plane crash in 1959
FreddyBone17 2 years ago
she had a miss carriage 6 months after his death, she was 2 weeks pregnant before he went on that winter dance tour he did
reekosuperproducer 2 years ago
Why was he touring in the god damned winter time? You should have taken the winter off, Buddy.
chumpthedog 2 years ago
That is how they made their living...the money was nowhere near like today...even an established legend like Hank Williams toured the whole year 'round
