I too have been very interested in learning some of McLaughlin's style but really don't know where to start. I've been able to develop some of the chops from studying some of the simpler Di Meola material, but McLaughlin is much more difficult to emulate in my opinion. Mark you really seem to have a firm grasp on it. What kind of music education do you have if I might ask?
Not much. Played trombone as a kid. The theory is quite simple. That clip is almost all a mode of melodic minor. It's just that John is great at jumbling notes up in a much more unpredictable manner than Al. His DVD is great. Get some software to slow down a line and pick out the 3, 4 and 5 note patterns and integrate them into your improvisation. I find sweep and alternate picking useful. Hope this helps
Some good guitarists out there might find it a bit patronising! Got medicine exams in a few weeks. JM's the way I do it DVD is amazing. Not much technique mentioned though. People stuggle with alternate picking crossing strings. I mix alternate and sweep picking across strings even when playing scales and mix up even and odd note groupings. Can put something on. e mail me for longer discussion. marklown@yahoo.co.uk

There is a part at 15:53 I think, in the orginal, where he is doing like 6 notes per beat. Can you get that part?

in fact in indian music we dont talk about keys, you talk about rags, they are different to our system.
f.i. they have different ascending and descending structures.
It´s a very interesting system and worth to check out.
