Lorikeets do not ear seeds of any kind. Mine loves smashed fresh bananas, grapes, cherries, raisins, peaches, plums, green beans, peas, pears, etc. And remember fresh water every day. They love to be misted with a squirt bottle, or shallow dish with warm water, used for swimming pool. My Lorikeet squeals with delight!!
My Lorikeet is 12 and she has a nice large cage, toys, music, and eats nectar, fresh fruit, veg. added with lots of attention and love!!<3<3<3 She is very smart!
You are taking care of it the wrong way! They need extra large cage and they feed on pollen and fruits and should get less seeds. They are trapped in a small cage with wrong things to eat!
Really glad to know Skittles is doing fine and has better living quarters than those shown in the video. Unfortunately the top comments & the video itself are what first time browsers will see and react to. Would be nice to see him now. Hopefully we can see an updated video one day. If ever you do, you could link the new video to this one.
Again, to all who feel compelled to post about Skittle's "living conditions" please stop wasting your breath. These people do NOT own him anymore... WE DO. He is in a HUGE flight cage with an appropriate diet, other bird buddies and avian vet care. His plucking is caused because of irritation to the crop area due to fatty deposits from fatty liver disease. He is doing very well.
I showed this to a vet and she said she wouldn't even put a budgie in there from how small it is. Please put this beautiful bird in a bigger cage. This one is good for a finch.
@exposfan77 Please check the prior posts before postingn about his living conditions. This video was uploaded over 2 years ago. Skittles DOES NOT belong to the people in this video. He is in a huge flight cage with a proper diet and other bird friends. The plucking is caused by irritation to the crop area due to fat deposits from fatty liver disease. He is under the care of an avian vet and is doing very well now.
@mumandtwins , this bird is a male. males do tend to pull their feathers out because they dont have a female with them, this cage is perfectly fine, its fully equiped with lots of toys and food for it.

@ibrit1 Are you kidding.... please check out the prior posts before making your comments. Skittles is NO LONGER with this family. He is with us, has a huge cage and appropriate care. His plucking is NOT out of bordem, it is due to several irritating fatty deposits that are around the crop area. They bother him so he plucks in that area (note that he is NOT plucked in any other area).
@happyanda1 You can't "make" your bird talk. Some birds talk- some never do. It really depends on your bird. You need to talk to your bird in a soothing tone, and repetition is very important. Start with something simple, and repeat it- do not bombard your bird with lots of things at once. Just remember- birds are like people...each one is very different. Your bird will talk if and when it is ready to. Good Luck to you!
@happyanda1 the best way to "make" a bird talk is to talk to it constantly and sooner or later it should say a few things. not all birds will talk even greys!
you really should have a bigger cage, if you have him out most of the time walking around then its not so bad, i have a smaller inside cage for when mine is sleeping and i have a patio aviary for during the day.
@tomsamja Please read prior posts before commenting, Skittles hasn't been in this environment for almost a year now. He is with a new family (us), has a huge cage, flight room, proper diet and bird friends. Plenty of human contact and toys too.
@5100VR Didn't you read the prior posts (from weeks ago)? He is NO LONGER in that cage, nor does he belong to those people. He now resides in a huge flight cage with 2 sun conure buddies and has lots of out of cage time daily. He is also on an appropriate lorikeet diet.
I am not really sure why everyone keeps posting about the size of his cage. He is no longer in this cage- in fact, he no longer belongs to the people who posted this video. Skittles is well loved, in a huge cage with 2 bird buddies and a great diet. Please just enjoy listening to him talk..... as the conditions he is in in the video are NOT the living conditions he is in now.
Could you please explain your reason for posting this? As posted several times before, Skittles is NO LONGER in this particular environment- so continuing to make disparging comments about his "conditions" or his home life are completely moot- as he DOES NOT live with these people anymore.
@hmschlmom6 ok well actulley THIS WAS A TIP!!!!!just trying to be helpful as those birds tend to have some cons and alot of pros so before you post a reply i already seen think again hmmm could this be tip!!!!!!!
I don't need to think "hmmmm, this could be a tip" because it is unnesscessary. You are basing your "tip" on THIS video, and the people who own the bird when THIS video was made. WE own Skittles now, and WE didn't post this video, so we don't need your "tip". I am aware of how to care for birds. Actually, there is not a problem with your bird being in front of the window as long as the window is draft free and well insulated. Sunlight is one of the most important things for a bird.
Also, he has been to the vet over the plucking. He isn't "self-harming" because of his environment as many have commented about, he has fatty liver disease that has caused fatty liver deposits on his throat area. These deposits irritate him and so he scratches/plucks at the area. It is health related and nothing more.
Skittles has belonged to us since April 2010 (we purchased him from the family that posted this video) He is now housed in a 6ft x 4ft x 5ft cage with his 2 sun conure buddies. He is on a nectar/fruit diet and is out of his cage from sun up to sun down. He is very loved and very spoiled by our family.
whats with lorikeets saying peekaboo? mine says it too!
i do have to agree with the other people here, the size of the cage makes my heart break... and is that food pellets? or kitty litter? because they cant live on pellets!
Do u give your lorikeet nectar and other sorts of fruit? cos they love it! U should put eucalyptus leaves in his cage also.. i feel its cruel leaving him in this cage its a size for a budgie :S poor bird, id never do that to my lorikeet.
Yeah, like the others have said, that cage is way too small. Also, maybe make his next cage a rectangular one? Everything I've read has said parrots feel more comfortable in a rectangular cage where they can tell where the front and back are. Apparently it makes it easier for them to be sure they've checked all the possible hiding spots for predators?
I hope u put him out of his cage sometimes. I had one for 15 years. 90% out of his cage. He never selfharmed him like yes. Cage is too smale. Please, loris are so intelligent!
Your bird is self harming. Maybe you should take him out of that pathetically small cage before he plucks all of his feathers out. If you were providing hiim with a stable environmment, he would not be doing it. A 1m x 1m cage is minimum size for a lori in my book. Shame on you
@58Clams not nesasarilly she doesn't show the whole top of the cage and obviously it's healthy and friendly. so what if it's a little to small maybe she gets lots of free flight time or just being out of her cage.
My Lory's name is Nikki. She is a real sweetie and I am crazy for her! She will be 2 yrs. old on March 12, 2010. She is the sweetest bird I have ever owned!
lorikeets are supposed to have especially large cages because they love to jump all around the place. Also ours mostly eat fruit and veggies. I've never seen those food pellets for lorries. What are they made of?
@raschellgates Zupreem makes a special Lori diet made with exactly what it needs but I would also suggest feeding it as many fresh foods as you can since that is what it would eat in the wild.
cute bird but cage way to small why dont u advertise in the free paper for a free cage ? if you were hear in new zealand i would buy you one you seem to really love your bird though
