Great video. I love this group. I have to say though, after looking at comments on MANY classical postings, I am really starting to get a kick out of everyone busting out the European languages to complement them, lol.
Biondi et al create a new world of music. none such we have ever heard before. the composers would surely fall in awe- Such ornate exquisiteness with such subdued execution... This is surely beyond any expectation of the composer...
First violin and direction is Fabio Biondi and first cello is Maurizio Naddeo, they are, according to Biondi himself, the bicephal leaders of Europa Galante.

I love the image of that... il prete rosso ( the red priest (Vivaldi was a red haired german)) would love the arguments we have over his music... vivaldian music is so much more a feeling and spiritual expression than it was an art of music...
To origionally interpret the usic in any form is a blessing beyond peerage.
Well, it is doubtless a good performance. What I do not like sometimes in Biondi is his "testosteron driven" performing of concertos. Maybe it is authentic, I do not know. What I hear is, that he generates a lot of " higher order harmonics" which he cannot damp, because of the speed of his play resulting in some whinny sound. I think, that Rachel Podger, J.W. Vriend or even Kennedy have solved this problem. Europe Galante is excellent : react on everything.
Compare this with other recordings by contemporary performers and conductors: at first blush it seems to lack the soul and intensity of other interpretations. But i noticed for the first time subtle patterns and connections i never noticed before listening to this recording. This is the real gem of the galante style of playing, allowing the composition to really shine in its own right!
this music is extremely sexy and passionate. vivaldi <3

I like how they are playing true barroque, with the ornaments and improvisation, and make it look so damn easy.

I have a recording of them playing this, but it's quite something actually seeing them. What a fantastic old church, too!
Watching Biondi churn out those Italian notes is amazing. He's truly one of the greats in Baroque violin performance. Thank you for posting this.

Is it gut strings on the cellos? Sounds like it
090513102 2 years ago
yes they're gut... :-)
PeriodinstrumentfaN 2 years ago
It's gut strings on all the instruments.
If you look, you can see that the A and the D on the cellos are plain gut and the G and the C have a single winding :)

You know what? I'd like to see a duet with Biondi and Giuliano Carmignola. That would be nice!

this cello picollo
very common on XVIII century , the E aditional string makes cello picollo execute violin pieces easier
