@overtonwhistle, in this video I was borrowing a friend's Martin DX1. No idea what kind of strings were on it. Prob regular mediums. On my guitars I use a mixture of Elixir mediums for the top 4 strings (.13 on the top) and then a custom Elixir .52 for the bottom 5th string and a John Pearse .72 (occasionally an Elixir .68) for the low string.
@mcnic17, Stephen is playing my Bernard Overton low F whistle, made in 2000. Bernard is no longer with us, unfortunately, but his protege Colin Goldie is making some fine whistles in the Overton style. Phil Hardy (Kerry Whistles) and Misha Somerville (MK whistles) are also making some killer F whistles. Worth checking them all out if you can and seeing what you like best.
What I love about your chording here, is although you have a few frets to work with on the first song - you have such a diverse changes that really holds the piece nicely.
Hi Saoirse, I usually put the tune names in the video description box of all of my videos, just so you know. I know the first tune as "Cuz Teehan's" or The Kerry Fling and the second i The Bells of Tipperary or The New Policeman. All the best and thanks for watching!
@Legertymusic Thanks Zac, I thought the first one sounded like Christmas Eve.Anyway Im a fiddle player from Mayo like your friend , Im working on the DADGAD backing and you seem to have it spot on just enough changes and mellow when it needs to be. Keep up the good work , slainte
@Saoirsethirtytwo, you are right! Sometimes I start one and end up playing the other. They start very similarly. Thanks for the kind comments! I actually use drop-D more than DADGAD these days, but it just seemed to fit this particular set very nicely.
@Saoirsethirtytwo Hey Zac, you might know this already but for drop d or even double drop d tuning check out a guy called Steve Cooney he is one of the few guys who has actually changed trad music in Ireland for the better. Tim Edey is also on here they play the same style for backing. Also google TG4 for trad music go to "ceoil" its Irish for music you will find top class musicans there. Enjoy...
Well, at the moment, I live in Los Angeles and Stephen lives in Ireland, and both for us have rather hectic tour schedules with different groups. The plan is to meet up in Ireland at some point and hopefully record an album. But flights and albums cost money, so that is the main factor. It will happen at some point!
very well done, i love all you guys' videos. where in co. mayo is stephen from? I was in westport in august, I saw the festival and I climbed Croagh Patrick
awesome playin by both of you...i wish someone would put up an in depth tutorial on how to tounge...thats the tricky part to give the tune its rhythm, especially on reels...still havent gotten it down pat yet...very hard
You are basically forming "D", "T" and "L" sounds with your tongue (but not vocal chords or throat) in order to get the tonguing. Some people use it a lot on the whistle, some don't. You don't need it to get the rhythm, it is just one way of articulating. Try tonguing different rhythmic aspects of a tune using each sound separately and then try forming them together quickly so you get a "Datil" kind of sound. This how you do tongued triplets. Hope that helps.
ohh i know that man, its just on jigs i read that you slur tounge tounge slur tounge tongue etc...but its hard to keep that going throuh the whole tune lol. But on reels you tongue on the offbeat and then sometimes on the beat...its just something i guess that practice makes perfect...thanks for that bit of info tho man
Don't believe everything you read. There's no set way or pattern that stays continuous like that. The essence of the music is variation, so try doing it different ways. Try lots of tonguing on jigs and then slowly take it out or tongue one phrase and then try it without tonguing the next time. Don't worry about following a pattern. Getting the feel and rhythm is more about what you leave out then trying to memorize what to put in and where. All the best!
thanks man for takin the time to respond! you are like my idol when it comes to irish music! i have been watching your vids for quite a while now...and you are extremely talented!!! i hope im as good as you one day, for real! it'll just take time to practice...and thanks for the adivice!!! take care zac and keep on with the great ass vids!!!

WOW. What a sweet sound you both make. This is among the best I've seen on youtube. Thanks so much for sharing. Delicate and heartfelt guitar work and truly sublime pipe playing.
fukin class, i play the low whistle too, but that is very gud, brilliant.... aprreciate the video, gud guitar too both compliment each other, fairplay lads
Here it is some 3 months after I first watched this video, and I still find myself returning on a regular basis to watch it again and again. Love it so, so much.
Absolutely wonderful! You are both talented musicians full stop. I love the Irish and their music, brings tears to my eyes every time! Keep up the good work and God bless ya! you keep people like me going with your music! Wonderful it is.
Just returning to say that I have watched this video a countless number of times. Your music makes my heart sing and the second tune, especially, always puts a smile on my face. You two have a gift, and I thank you for sharing it with us.
I don't really know the first tune, so maybe it is usually played in A, but in this case, in DADGad, it's capo'ed up to the 8th fret (Bb), not the 10th (C). ;)
Ah, you are right. Steven must have been playing with G fingering. I always played it in A. Shows how much I actually pay attention to what I am doing on the guitar!
First off, wow. Amazing! I'm a music major who's studied music for who knows how long and I am truly inspired by your music. I can't help but want to buy this music. Take $3000 and record it. You have the fan base. If you live apart, take even two days and record it. Send it away for mastering and DO IT! Getting a few bucks in from CD 1 (an investment for sure) will feed the next CD project and get it off the ground, giving you all kinds of potential for the future. Bravo!
Hi stradguy, Have you $3000 you could lend us? ha ha. Actually we are currently working on some new videos right now and discussing getting together in Ireland to record, possibly in the summer. So an album will probably show up eventually. It just takes time and money as I am sure you know, plus the fact that we are both generally playing music full-time in different countries. It will happen, and we will alert everyone when it does.
I read somewhere in your responses that you were going to post a video about DADGAD or give some chords you played. Is it still coming, cause I'm anxiously waiting. You pose a great example.
It comes from "Cuz" Tehan, an Irish musician who lived in Chicago for many years. The tune is also sometimes called the "Kerry Fling". The second tune is a traditional reel called "the Bells of Tipperary" or "The New Policeman".
alrite lads , music is class , both instruments are amazin , love stephens style his ornementation is great . I live in birmingham and have being playing flute and whistle for years , that last tune I have always known as The New Policeman

My life has been so hectic lately plus I want to get a friend to play melody for me and getting that coordinated takes a while. If I do guitar teaching videos, I want them to be done right. It will happen my friend, I promise and will (hopefully) be worth the wait;)
hey i love this music and im both irish and a musician. i would love to learn to play the whistle the bouzouki and the uilleann pipes but i have no idea where to learn. where'd you guys learn? i figure stephen probably learned in ireland but i have no idea. once again, all your music is incredible and its refreshing to know that we younger guys still want to keep traditional irish music alive. thanks,
It is not the fist time I'm looking for your video. It's really light, it's cool. Could you give me few chords you play with your guitar. I try to keep it, but, it's too hard for a fiddler :) Or do you know a website where we can find brillant chord as you play ? Thanks a lot. Xavier
I'd suggest playing around with DADGAD a lot and just seeing what works for you. Most of what I do is just stuff I figured out over time. And work on your right hand rhythm! That's the most important thing. I may post some guitar teaching stuff soon. Still debating how to do it well.
Congratulations to both of you guys. Really amazing how you are playing your instruments !!!. We can feel the musical energy emerging from you. I like it very much. Thank you.
Absolutely beautiful, especially on cuz teahan's! Though it's going to drive me mad trying to figure out what you're doing on the guitar... I have the first chord right now.... what chords are you playing?
i keep watching this vid. both for the music but most of all watching the fingering on the guitar. any chance of posting a video showing close up runs and chords for reels in dadgad. keep up the good work! :¬}
funny thing, I was just listening to mike Mc and John mcsherry on cd, Then I keyed John Dohertys reels to youtube which linked to Stephen doherty reels, and boy am I glad I did. Love this set, Stick together lads you'll go a long way ! (well I'd buy your stuff)!
Hi, I'm fiddler, and start to learn dadgad, I love your accompagment (sorry, my english is not well, i'm french) Could you send me few "accords" to play. My MSN : petitminot @ hotmail . com thanks and continue it's so cool
Well, as they are traditional tunes, the best thing to do is find recordings which have those tunes on them (if you can't find an actual living and breathing musician to teach them to you). Personally I learned the second tune years ago off of Kevin Crawford's "D Flute Album", forgot it for a while and then relearned it from Louise Mulcahy. Learned the forst one in sessions. Not sure where Stephen got them. Hope that helps! - Zac
Great set of clips! Really tasteful as usual. I assume you were in for Charlene's wedding -- if so, sorry I missed you. I was in Israel -- long story, but among other things playing at Molly Bloom's pub in Tel Aviv with bouzouki player Ehud Nathan. Hope the VA gigs are going well. And no, the CD is still not out yet! Life keeps getting in the way...
You know, I started off as a classically trained percussionist, for about 15 years or so. My first fretted instrument was an Octave Mandolin so, when I learned guitar I started with DADGAD instead of standard tuning, which'll make it interesting trying to learn Drop-D, though it's on my list of things to do before I die. :)
Hey guys!!! I've read you both are All-Irelands in different instruments....please, would you show us your art?? I'd love to hear you playing the pipes and melodeon :)
Keep her lit...

The first tune sounds a bit like the Christmas Eve reel.
withak30 4 years ago
It does a bit. We play it as a reel here, but it's really supposed to be a fling. It's associated with the late Terry "Cuz" Tehan.

Nice mitts on the capo. Your chord structure is 'old skool'. tks for the post.

"Old Skool?" How so? Is that good or bad? ;P

Hi, I fiddle around with the whistle myself. I like this set, can you possibly send me a link as to where I can find the music?
bagpipeplayer 4 years ago
Well, as they are traditional tunes, the best thing to do is find recordings which have those tunes on them (if you can't find an actual living and breathing musician to teach them to you). Personally I learned the second tune years ago off of Kevin Crawford's "D Flute Album", forgot it for a while and then relearned it from Louise Mulcahy. Learned the forst one in sessions. Not sure where Stephen got them. Hope that helps! - Zac

Hi Zac,
Great set of clips!
Cheers,
Randy

Stellar, both of you guys. Playing in DADGAD?
chade2112 4 years ago
I was in DADGAD in this video, yes.
Legertymusic 4 years ago
Nice -- me and my buddy (who also plays the pipes) have been in the process of learning DADGAD. Fun tuning: watch?v=z9FAji8pxzg
chade2112 4 years ago
Yeah, DADGAD is really great for the trad stuff. Very versatile. Check out drop-D as well, I use that a lot.
Legertymusic 4 years ago
You know, I started off as a classically trained percussionist, for about 15 years or so. My first fretted instrument was an Octave Mandolin so, when I learned guitar I started with DADGAD instead of standard tuning, which'll make it interesting trying to learn Drop-D, though it's on my list of things to do before I die. :)
chade2112 4 years ago
very cool indeed! cant remember the name of the tune though....from Donal Lunny?
johnconnolly007 4 years ago
Stephen got the first tune from his brother Tom (box player with the band Ceide) and the second came from Colm O'Donnell. Thanks for the comments!
