I used to watch this movie on TV when I was a little girl and just WWWAAIIT for this part. Thanks for posting this great version, it's the cleanest and best one of this on YouTube. Anything Jerry ever did was gold for me. And not one toilet joke or curseword anywhere.
SHIT MY PANTS LAFFING SO HARD. CAN'T WAIT TO SHOW MY KIDS. KEEP IT ALIVE BABY. THIS IS CLASSIC FROM ANOTHER GENERATION. WHATS OLD IS NEW AGAIN. PASS THE TORCH, DON'T LET MASTER JERRY LEWIS BE FORGOTTEN!!!!!
We watched this in our jazz band this morning :) this is the most fantastic thing i've ever seen. and the Count Basie band... my God, they can swing hard.
Playing this in my jazz band at school. As the piano player in it all, I just love this song. Great tempo, great beat, & overall, a great song. We play next week, along with "One O Clock Jump," "Malaguena," & "Perdido" alos great songs :)
to tell you the truth, I totally forgot family guy parodied this and I was looking up jerry lewis after seeing him on anamaniacs and then I ran into this song and it was after I heard it that remember it was parodied. I'm actually glad I forgot because then I wouldn't have saw this the way everyone saw it, as a masterpiece.
Love it! I had a silly grin on my face the whole time I was watching it.
I came here because I saw and enjoyed the Peter Griffin (Family Guy) version and I wanted to see what the original version was like. My verdict: it's even better!
@starman180 download the clip using 'youtube downloader' then use 'any audio converter' (both available as freeware) then just convert the video to extract the mp3 :-)
@TbirdsOf1965 Awww... you're so kind! I feel better anyway paying for it... and thank you! But by the way, I tried to find the name of the song in Cinderfella (the dance) do you know it by any chance? I don't want to be a bother of course!
I remember this - used to play it in a band I was in - Lewis was a big band jazz fan! A friend of ours, Ray Sims, played trombone with James (his GOOD jazz band) - and they played at the Flamingo in Vegas, and Jerry was always there! Ray was Zoot Sims' brother. They were both friends of my family - mom, Katie, was in vaudeville and always did "Second Hand Rose" just as she did in her Vaudeville days! What a time that was back then - I knew everybody that had anything going on!
We are pplaying this in my jazz band. This recording is soooo perfect. It has just the right swing and the tempo is perfect. It is just about imossible to find a recording like this anymore.
@bachstradtrumpet Basie always won those "Battle Of The Bands" with Ellington, etc. He & his guys were always the best. They called that tempo "in the pocket". Recorded in NY. The acoustics of a big room, & everybody playing off each other lead to far greater recordings & quality compared to the overproduced recordings done today - many times with different parts being done at different times & places. There's a lot of late 50's early 60's stereo recordings that are amazing in pop, r&b & jazz.
@TbirdsOf1965 Stereo recordings made before the commercial availability of stereo RECORDS are largely incredibly well recorded; engineers and A&R people really strove for the richness of dimensionality when these records were taped but then released on mono records.
When stereo records became a reality, the record buying public couldn't appreciate the subtly of the soundstage expansion; they wanted the dual-mono "ping-pong" sound of individual voices from each speaker only.
Where can you find this exact version of the song? Every version you hear is either tinny, not the original, or too fast. This just has the right swing.
@dubdaze68 - As mentioned in the video description above, this version as used in the movie is from the Count Basie "Chaiman Of The Board" album. The recording session was done in 1958. This scene uses just the last half of the song. Searching google for "Count Basie" + "Chairman Of The Board" will give you many ways to buy or download this exact song in stereo (which was new in '58). I replace mono versions with stereo HQ versions of various artists in a few of the videos on this channel.
Hi. I was recently at a function where Jerry was the guest and he played this for us. An interesting thing he mentioned was that because of copyright laws they were unable to use the version from the album so they got the band in especially to record this version for the movie. Jerry said he was there while they recorded it live trying to work out what he would do with the track. He did this the next day. Fascinating guy.

my best take on what he's saying from the point the camera focuses on his face:
"best of luck better beat it
but we all love women so forget it
you, you, you, you, me, we have one big masterpiece, made out far
I know!
you think that you own me
But no!
but no that's not right why are you like that
you, you, you, me we have one minute to make our mark, make our mark"

Ok, just exactly what is Jerry saying in the chorus?
"And you and you and me we have to . . ."
I love Jerry, not least for introducing me to Count Basie at a tender age!
