There is an order of reality. Theres reality behind the reality and Andy was tapped into that. So he was always real even when he was unreal. The universe is full with paradoxes like that. Andy was just pointing these out to us. Most people use them against us.
"There are a lot of different foreign people in New York..."
Um, I'll respectfully submit that this is not Andy speaking frankly. It's a bit. And the bit may well be Andy speaking frankly. The beauty of Andy is that every time you saw his work, it was like taking acid--you could just never tell what was real, and what wasn't--therefore destroying the whole concept of "reality." Brilliant.
I honestly think he spent so much of his life in different "characters," and in this fantasy world of his, that he never really took the time to develop a "real Andy"... ya know? People today talk like "Andy was always putting people on"... I just think that as an adult, he stayed in characters most of the time out of necessity, because even HE didn't fully know who he was outside that fantasy world. The fantasy world WAS his reality. It was like he was from a different planet just visiting.
I knew Andy before he was famous and he was very difficult to get to know. When Andy was really Andy you were never sure if that was him. What was there was like a big kid. He was much more comfortable in different roles.
In 1505 a women was hunted and killed by an evil clown. Now that you have read this, that same clown will be sitting next to your bed with a machete and evil, red glowing eyes when you wake up. Unless you post this to 10 other videos in 1 hour of reading it. Hurry up
I love these Youtube clips of Andy Kaufman. He's a different character in every appearance. Steve Martin was totally prepared for this. But then Andy outsmarted Steve by not putting on an act for once, and actually just being himself and answering the questions straight! He was always one step ahead of every one!:)
Yeah interesting seeing these two together. I actually think they really had a mutual respect for eachother and I think that's why Andy gives one of his only "straight" interviews where he's actually being himself. I don't think I've ever seen him with the mask off like this.
I concur. Andy was on the show to explain himself: I can see Steve is really interested to know about Andy's technique, which neither he nor the audience could understand completely by then.
I think Steve respected Andy's career, but I also think Andy didn't respect anyone else's career more than his own. That's what made him a legend.
Why do people object to Steve Martin? He was a good host; he let Andy talk - didn't hackle him or put him down in any way. He laughed and applauded his commentary...what's the problem?
Yer right dude. Andy disdained telling simple jokes and engaging in traditional comedy as Martin; his anti-humour and ab absurdis performances are now part of history. Steve? Well, with due respect, he's never been out of SNL. He's fun but you get bored of the same.
Mmm. You needn't research much on Andy's career to realise his groundbreaking legacy. As for mainstream comedy... well, there are a lot of professionals in that pack, aren't there, so I'll probably let them work harder.
I am not sure if you are implying that Martin did traditional comedy or if you lumped these two together, adding that Martin was not as succesful. Maybe you missed the 70's, but there is so much out there on his work, that you obviously would improve your argument if you know what you were talking about. Neither of these stars went a traditional route. Martin filled entire arenas doing a non-traditional show. He had a very sucessful time doing it, until he moved on from that part of his life.
If you are not sure about what I wrote, read carefully: I have never said Andy was more "successful" than Steve, which would be proposterous. In brief, I said that 1) Steve's comedic style, even though he was never a cast member, is clearly due to his SNL years whereas Andy's was totally unique and original; 2) dispensing with what we'd call traditional, Andy's legacy has remained as groundbreaking today as in its heyday. Andy's real face appears on this vid which means he felt OK with Steve.
yeah, I would say around 1977 -- george shapiro became his manager and I think that andy was talked into doing earnest promo stuff for 'taxi' at this time -- same with 'dating game' appearance
I don't know. Something's off. Even here AK doesn't seem natural--he's acting a part. I think he had a huge identity problem and this was the best he could do to seem normal.
bummer, no sound anymore. what happened?? this vid's been online a few years. it used to be fine. how does the sound just all of a sudden go out?
(note: i clicked on other vids just to make sure it's not my computer. it's just this video.)

Great analysis. I also think andy's 'act' in this segment was not to act. Absolutely brilliant tactic from the consummate chameleon.

Yes exactly! You could see by Martins reaction; he was not expecting Kaufman to be straight with him.
