For example, the circumstances leading to Kira's first meeting with Ryuk, as well as discovering the Death Note, differ greatly from the anime.

While it doesn't necessarily spoil anything up to or beyond episode 19, it will be more beneficial if you simply watch the entire anime first.

That's as spoiler-free of an answer you're going to get.
