There is clearly a relationship between our conscious and unconscious, introvert and extrovert selves which seem to have a built in balancing mechanism. In Tony's case he was for the whole country the funniest and most lovable of comedians but for himself the saddest and least lovable of men. It seems a gross injustice that a man who brought such joy to millions should end up this way.
"Philip Oakes has sadly died", was unintentionally the funniest part of this whole film.
As if they were expecting him to die happily. As well as the way she whispers the word "died" like it's something incredible that nobody else has ever done.
i wish somebody had made a documentary about steptoe and son that was as good as this... instead of the muck-raking tabloid article they palmed us off with

A very interesting documentary.
Again, thanks for posting.
Just one criticism of the documentary though, in that I thought the incidental music was dreadful - quite out of character with the era and theme.
