  • boooooo!!!!! originals are always good and obviously chuck berry sounds better !!!!!

  • Just think 2 songs and all done without lip synking and a soundtrack

  • Ate hoje 2011 achamos isso demais! Rock roll

  • Johnny Rivers !!!!! says it all !!!!!!

  • Johnny Rivers rocks then and now!!!

  • Foghat's version was a major change. Loved 'em both.

  • Freeze it at 1:10. What's she thinkin, my guess is,"my name is maybelline will you drive me"!!

  • we grue up at he beast time rock'n'roll was strong we had guy's like johnny river's and things were just starting RJK laning mich

  • Good combo of two of his best. Looks lip-synced as no mike on him or near. Still, as ever, he gave a fine performance and over the years I've come to appreciate his work( early and late) more and more. THANX FOR THE GOOD SHOW!

  • @909chuck A boom-mounted "shotgun" microphone was probably just out of camera range.

  • @altfactor As the Spanish say, "Es Posible." Could be, but quality of sound and his moving as he plays and sings make s it 50/50. As I said, it's still a great clip by any standards and thanks for posting!!!!

  • YOU STOLE THIS MUSIC, WORD FOR WORD

  • @TheShanovan It's called "paying your dues" by honoring the music that shaped that came before you. If you want to talk about stealing music- look at Led Zeppelin.

  • @TheShanovan According to Mr. Berry, "Maybellene" is a reworking of the old country tune "Ida May."

  • I especially liked the backup singing on "Maybelline", which wasn't on Rivers' hit recording (which I believe was a live performance at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go in Los Angeles).

The backup singing actually made the song better.

  • This was a live perfiormance, and not lip-synch.

And in some ways, better than the record.

Was this from "Shindig"?? That show supposdely almost never allowed any lip-synching.

  • girl at 1:40 has so sweet smile...

  • in my opinion it is the best version of this song

  • I grew loving his music as a 5 year old in 1963 man he is the man now Im 52 he still the man great music

  • props to the genius Chuck Berry for writing these tunes. Props to Johnny for introducing these songs- and Chuck, pretty much- to us 60s kids in the middle of Beatlemania. When I got my first electric guitar in 1965 I wanted to play like George Harrison AND Johnny Rivers:)

Neil Young has said he and Steve Stills used to go catch Johnny Rivers play the Whisky A Go Go when they were in Buffalo Springfield...

  • Im not getting my email from youtube....and i dont know why..all my settings are right

  • the great joe osborn on bass. pick up a little Joe!

  • It was kinda like the internet is now!

  • The first gal blondie looks like a sweet prom princess. The dark haired gal seems to be like a get-lucky gal of that era.

  • at 1:51 in the video, the girl on the left looks alot like a young Barbra Streisand..

  • Memphis, a great and SAD song about broken families. This live performance is monstrous, despite Johnny singing the final verse 2nd, and vice versa. This pro always gives me the Boogie Woogie flu! Thanks, Johnny.

  • @jimboclare Monsterous performance? Strong words brother jimbo.

  • EVERYBODY STOP THE FIGHTING long enuff to tell me the make n year of that guitbox he's strummin'.

  • Ya... What's up with dissing the king? I used to make fun of him when I was younger cause he didn't write his own songs. But The dude was a GREAT singer and guitar player. You will get savvy about music over time.

  • Qué Rock and Roll, cómo los bailabamos !!!

  • This is awesome! Those three cats are laying down an incredible groove. If the audio was better you could hear the rhythym, AND the melody that bass player is accomplishing all at once.

  • johnny rivers is the best

  • Why doesn't anybody write a good description of what they are posting anymore. This is a great upload, rainbow. Why don't you say what is from?.......Seems that nobody does anymore and I wonder if it's because they get easily flagged then?

  • Was this clip from Shindig? It sure sounds like the Blossoms singing awesome backup in Maybelline.

  • elvis couldn't play guitar and sing

  • @elijahcsn you dissing the king?

  • @elijahcsn YOUR DICK ! WATCH THE 68 COMBACK !

  • elvis couldn't play guitar and sing

  • Johnny Rivers is not in the R & R HOF because of a douche named Jann Wenner. The Memphis Mafia's claim that Johnny Rivers "stole" "Memphis" from Elvis is a crock. 1) Elvis has never been a particularly good interpreter of Berry 2) Elvis' version sounds like Chuck's on 78RPM whereas JR's sounds like Tommy Tucker's "High Heel Sneakers". We're talkin' two totally different styles here.

  • Is that Mel Taylor from The Ventures on drums ?? He played on The Hollywood Palace clips

  • read post ...johnnys not in hall of fame....WTF???

  • Nobody "stole" anything from anybody...

  • Woow..this is great..first time i see a live clip w. Johnny..not too bad!

  • Chuck Berry is so much better. CB is a true artist, this guy is a hack.

  • @zoltar5282

    Just FYI...

Anyone who uses the term "true artist" is a pretentious cunt.

  • @Verbeke7 not really. But thanks for the input.

  • I like rivers because he wasnt afraid to head up the neck and jam a solo.

  • I was born in the wrong era! Oh to be one of those girls on stage getting eyed by Johnny Rivers! *swoon*

  • I love how Johnny is strolling around the stage eye-f**king the gorgeous girls and smiling, probably thinking to himself "yes, I'm the man"

  • Great Job By Johnny !! :) Not only one singer can sing their songs..... If they sing it good, then its Good,,,,,, All this comparing is ridiculous...and know that the more the song is sung by whoever, .....the more the original singer benefits from it. :)

  • One of the many bad copy-cats from the USA, we quickly search for the great Chuck Berry!

  • Great version of "Memphis" - but I'm sorry to say : Johnny was a great artist - but

there was one thing - he simply wasn't as likable as Ricky Nelson a.s.o. - pity !!

  • Just Great!!! love oldies..viva the oldies!:)

  • when i was a wee boy this guy made me rock

    now i'm fifty one

    johnny rivers has just begun...

    ( sung to'memphis' )

  • I seen johnny in concert several times over the years. last time was 2003. he is a real guitar wizard. retunes his ax often between tunes to stay true to the pitch. a real pro. he was getting on in age then but looked and sounded great. sounds the same as the records. to me thats the mark of a good concert. no gimicks.

  • Contest 1, call the chords out ,

    Contest 2 find something better

  • ....Seamless from one song to another,,,,,, someone knows what they are doing!

  • I got this old heap of shit car and a mole for a girlfriend, maybe I write a song........

  • Fu-Uu-Cc-Kk___________________that man is good

  • Muuito bom mesmo! Que sensacionais estes vídeos! Amei. O cara é muuito bom!

  • man you suc,you steal bllack music

  • I like those 60's girls with the early boufont hair style. Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Ma.

  • Lol wtf ladders

  • Great performance by Johnny Rivers on a couple of Chuck Berry tunes - Rivers kind of gives the tunes a city feel compared to Chuck's original hillbilly style.

  • This is called Talent.

  • los dos mejores temas los temas q mas se bailaban pregunten quien no bailo este tema y q borracho no lo bailo tambien jaja

  • all the early rock stars ripped off Chuck Berry (the real King of Rock): beach boys, beatles, stones, elvis, and Johnny. as long as we acknowledge this but still appreciate all rock music and enjoy listening to it, that's all that matters

  • @weezadam You are dead on but what a polish Rivers gave the stuff . Moreover he introduced his own feel and riffs like the intro and outro to Memphis : So cool Jimi Hendrix used it for his intro to Hey Joe ah HAH ...yeah.

  • @Geepsterr Some neat trivia for ya. The intro (and outro) was created by the guy playing the bass, the great Joe Osborn.

  • Everybody knowed what John Lennon writ Maybelline and Memphis way before the White boys in this country cotton to it.---Elijah Muhammad quoted in "Polish Hippies" by Sal Vitoski (1970)

  • Pretybland compared to Chuck... I like the instrumental vcersion of Memphs better, too.

  • Them white girls sure do have the beat! LOL

  • @pitwalker134 Dig those black chicks at 3:45 as well !!!

  • the girls screamed when he played his guitar solo- now that's unique...

  • classic voice !!!

  • Everyones comments are correct. I truly love the Johnny Rivers music, songs, and sound. Chuck Berry, Elvis, etc., sang many of the same songs, But Johnny Rivers had a distinct sound, as did Elvis and Chuck Berry. They all had their distinct sound, and signature songs. With Johnny Rivers, it was Secret Agent Man and Seventh Son, that were his trade mark songs and sound, as well as Memphis, which everyone sang. Music from the 50's to the 60's to the early 70's, will never be as good again.!!

  • From the "pre-superstar" era of professionalism. Music was fun and stars approachable. How could we not want to visit to those days?! ROCK ON!

  • This guy may be short but he's a giant when it come's to my kind of music....

  • And the crowd goes crazy...

  • se acuerdan cuando vino a la Argentina en el año 1990 o 1991 en el programa de Marcelo Tinelli "RITMO DE LA NOCHE" musica a go-go, todavía se bailaban esas canciones.

  • What great times...the wonderful summer of '64 listening to johnny..beatles...dave clark five...dusty springfield and the rolling stones...terriffic

  • white people dancing

    cute

  • I think Johnny Rivers does these two songs better than anyone - even Chuck Berry.

  • chuck berry sang it better and he made most of these songs if not all but it was the 60's but I did love the way Johnny River sung the songs I had the album

  • chuck berry sang it better and he made most of these songs if not all but it was the 60's but I did love the way Johnny River sung the songs I had the album

  • @meljes2 shit i like this version better than chucks, but no one can beat chuck at johnny b good

  • man, you want to know "the birth of cool", here you go...

  • Rivers's version had the mandate down - the attitude and melodic sense to complete and surpass even the feeling that I had put into it. It shouldn't have surprised me though. He had done the same thing with "Maybellene" and "Memphis," two Chuck Berry songs.

    Bob Dylan "Chronicles"

  • GREAT******

  • MEU DEUS , que época maravilhosa.

    Hj só tem LIXO

  • esse é os estados unidos verdadeiro, hoje só tem porcaria.

  • I love Jonny Rivers!

  • one of the all time great songs. God bless.

  • Help me Information..! Tell the guy who said Johnny stole this song from Elvis. Ha Once a song is recorded it's Public Domain to re record. Johnny is from the bayou and played Fats, Chuck B., Elvis and Jerry Lee songs since he was a kid. Stole it's very harse. Memphis is recorded by many artists. Johnny plays good like a Southern Boy should.

  • The discussion about stealing is silly. Take Tennessee Waltz for instance done in many versions. Alma Cogan's was probably the greatest hit but seems to be quite unknown outside Europe.

Elvis didn't come up with Blue Suede Shoes - his version was excellent but one should not say that he stole it (from Carl Perkins).

Judging from the hit lists around 1964 we were many who liked the J. Rivers version of Maybelline & Memphis T. That does not change the more than positive status of Elvis.

  • he did steal it from elvis go to his Wikipedia and read it

  • Don't forget the man who wrote Maybelline and Memphis?? If Johnny "stole" the song from Elvis, then Elvis "stole" it from Chuck Berry!! Early rock and roll was a steamrollin', contagious, infectious sound that nobody controlled and nobody owned. It was new , it was wild and it was free..to share, to imitate, to make your own! It only lasted a few years before commercial interests really stole it.but for a while there...it was glorious!

  • @Mrjonsongz everyone stole from Chuck Berry back in the day. The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Rivers, Elvis, the list goes and on and on. As long as people recognize that Chuck Berry is a genius and is the REAL king of rock n roll, then all is good

  • @Mrjonsongz

    well,

That's allright Mama by Elvis was released before Chuck had one single out, and richard wasn't doing high pressure piano rock at that time, elvis stole nobodys music, he was just so natural with covers, i mean his blue suede shoes smokes calrs version, also thanks to his great backing band, The Blue Moon Boys, DJ Fontana on drums, Bill Black on bass and Scotty MOore on Lead Guitar.

  • @Mrjonsongz , you're right ,and you are still remaining right ,if you'd change :" early rock&roll was a ...." -

    into : "early Punk was a ..." / "...early Reggae was a ..." / "early hip hop was a ..." (techno & house ?)

"...infectious sound that nobody controlled and nobody owned. It was new , it was wild and it was free..to share..."

i'd like to add two other unfailing signs of any important youth/music culture :

your parents won't like it - and somebody says "it all sounds the same".

  • @Mrjonsongz Absolutely! And Elvis stole from everyone, every genre -- country, blues, rockabilly, spirituals. But he was still awesome. What's great about people like Johnny Rivers and the rest is that they put their own spin (or flavor) on these great songs. Most of them even knew how to play an instrument. I saw Johnny Rivers in concert about 10 years ago. His guitar playing was awesome; no talent loss with age. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen!!

  • @chelle329 EVERYBODY STOLE FROM EVERYBODY, WHO CARES ???????? ONLY YOU BRAINCHILDS !

  • @Mrjonsongz WHO CARES ????????????

  • go johnny go, ese!

  • As Frank Sinatra said back in the day: Young man Rivers just keeps rollin' along.

  • That's the biggest bunch of bullshit ever! You need to get your facts straight.

  • it's not my fault if you don't know the facts. rather you must read the book of Peter Guralnick about Elvis and the title is "love without brakes" and you'll read everything there.

  • sorry the right title of the book is Careless love.

  • johnny rivers is a badass name btw

  • Dear Viewers: A Great Double Shot straight up of Jack Daniels Johnnie Rivers nerve relaxing and healing Bourbon who counted amongst his great fans Elvis, Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley from what I've heard. Tasha, Cape Cod-Grafton, Mass.

  • Johnny Rivers.. The best kept "secret" in rock and roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The woman at 0:53 is none other than Toni Basil!

  • boy he was cute!

  • put this guy in the rock n roll HALL OF FAME

  • The "hall of shame " is a joke without JRivers & Grand Funk & Steppenwolf in it. The curator is an asshole.

  • the ford got hot and wouldnt do no more... imagine that... i wonder if he was talkin bout a flathead v8

  • If I may..., the Ford got hot and wouldn't do no "mo"....

  • i lived on the south sude of memphis and we whupped the klans ass

  • Jane Fonda was already an actress in 1964 and did not appear in either Shindig or Hullaballoo one of which I think this video is from.

She was probably filming Cat Ballou which was released in 1965

At any rate she did not do any of this type of thing during the sixties.

  • that's right it's live. Stage hand is handling guitar cable just off screen. He sings Memphis verses out of sequence. You think they would go through that trouble to dub voice? He is so gifted that it looked effortless. One guitar, a bass, and a drummer playing simple progressions and making it timeless. Some good stuff comes along once in a while today but majority is plain junk. Rock and roll will never die.

  • this was live, not mimed to a record. rivers can rock. stars went to him. his voice is incredible. he on guitar player advisory board for years. he kicks ass

  • blonde model is jane fonda

  • Johnny Rivers made one great record after another into the early '70s. His "Rewind" album is one of the lost classics of the '60s. This performance is live--live vocal, live band. The man is an awesome artist.

  • To sing live now is hard, but in the 60's on live video, and not miss a beat....thanks for sharing !

  • he was lipsynching, dummy. just like every other artists in the 60s that "performed" on television.

  • how bout that cracker!

  • johnny rivers a true legend

  • The female backup singers wreck this.

  • the broads stepped out of Stepford Wives

  • Johnny Rocks dad, and you know it!

  • Johnny R kicks ass on these 2 songs. He never gets the credit due him.America was in the middle of the British invasion, when we had true kick ass rockers like Johnny Rivers knockin out windows and tearing down doors.Man,those gigs at the Whisky a go go,well I guess ya had to be there.Keep rockin for us purists Johnny.True raw talent

  • I think I recognize some of the dances the aisle dancers are doing, the shimmy, mashed potatoes and watusi, I think. My sister and girlfriends used to try to dance like them and thought we were doing great!

  • I am dancing like them right now. LOL

my monitor is in mortal danger, as its difficult to type and watusi at the same time...LOL

(all kidding aside..my sister and I used to do the same thing..except we looked like clunkers..LOL )

(I don't know why someone would thumbs down your comment, I brought it back up for you =)

  • u dance up a storm!

  • Great tune!!

Check out the cats dancing in the aisle and I though I was a bad dancer. LOL

  • the guy wearing the horn rims at 1:15 looks like rainman when he nervous and having a fit

  • Rainman rocks!

  • is there a "best of rainman" on YT?

  • Rainman really gets into Memphis

  • hmmm, now I have to watch the video again. I just read the comment about the bassman. :) shucks... I "have" to watch it again? lol.. love that kind of HAVE to!!!

  • Saw him on Ed Sullivan once and he sang the song Tracks of my Tears...only this time he sang it a bit different. He had a goatee and he sang the Tracks of my Chin. The whole way through he changed the words and had a tiny grin.

How come I can remember that, but can't remember what I had for supper yesterday? lol

  • Very cool video of a great performer. Johnny Rivers is another performer who should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Ron

  • Excelenteeeeeee!!!!!unicoo!

  • pickin' notes and simple chord progressions made great musicians when they put their hearts in it. Johnny Rivers set the bar on Memphis and no one does it better. Stuff today will never compare.

  • The Bassman is the brother of Lurch in the Adams Family.

  • he later became king kong bundy in the wwf

  • Great!

  • After this concert he had at least 2 dates with the girls on stage. One with a girl with blond hair and one with a girl with dark hair.

    He rocks!

  • Also check out Johnny Ramistella singing Ida Red.

  • my dad use to litsen to him when he was in nam..he still smiles when he hears him on the radio today.

  • Although Maybelline was a good cover, I think his version of Memphis was one of the best one's, even better than Chuck's.

  • The good old days of rock and roll, to be sure. Sure makes that garbage that passes for music nowadays seem utterly pathetic.

  • He was sooo good lookin

  • oh yeeeeaah!

  • super

  • I'm surprised someone does call rescue for the two chicks at 1:00 who are clearly having seizures.

  • Good old Rock`n Roll !!! Weiter so und mehr davon !

  • johnny rivers dude

  • sigh...why?

  • Thank's nyrainbow2! This is my fav video. He is really Great in this posted video!

  • her look at 1:11 kills me. the look of love

  • What a rock voice he has! He's one of the very best in rock'n roll history. Fab, fab!!!! ...and he can play his guitar, yeah!

  • The sixties brought such great music! Johnny Rivers is amazing; great performance!....i wonder if the chicks are paid to clap and dance in the back round...

  • Johnny Rivers one of my all time favorites, thanks for posting

  • that's my kind of power trio!!

  • AWESOME KICK ASS THANKS
