even Lea Salongga is a mezzo-soprano and her vocal range is not that high compared to Idina Menzel's, surely she prove that it is not in the high of notes that belting is actually seen to be good but actually to the delivery of the song. surely, she is a superb performer. I like her very much for that matter.
Umm anyone ever consider the reason the key is changed is so that the music flows and fits better with the song before it..... If u noticed electricity turns directly into defying gravity. And furthermore there is no set key in which a song must be performed. If Lea was in the show it would be different but shes not this is a concert and she performs it amazingly if i do say so myself.... <3 U LEA!!!!!!
Lea is every inch an artist. One of the most beautiful voices in the world today - but I also truly love Idina Menzel. You can't compare their voices. No one can compare with Lea, but Idina is a sweetheart and very talented in her own way.
Don't get me wrong I love Lea Salonga but this isn't how the song is supposed to be sung, it's a beautiful rendition but it has nothing on the original
I love your comment on Lea Salonga's "As If We Never Said Goodbye"... I accidentally deleted it, though. I was trying to delete something else from another video... but I accidentally deleted your comment instead... That was totally accidental. You should know that I appreciate your comment very much. VERY MUCH! :) If you say it again, I won't meddle and I'll be very careful.
why's everyone insulting Idina? wow that's just rude! why don't you all guys try to sing like Idina and find out that you're Minnie Mouse instead of her! I know Lea did a great job right here, it truely was but she didn't have to do it eight times a week. why don't we all just be proud of Lea - because we should - and stop insulting Idina! I love them both but for other plays. Lets talk about THIS performance. Lea was amazing in THIS performance so BRAVO! (L)
@joshgardell It wasn't my intention to insult Lea, so I'm sorry if you took it like that. I love Lea, really I do, but just don't understand why people are talking about someone else instead of Salonga, and then insulting another person. But anyway, I love this performance! just wanted to point something out.
i don't think shes too old, i think it would just be different and strange to see anyone play Elphaba, other then Idina. thats all. but this performance, was truly amazing.
I really adore Lea Salonga's voice. It's sweet, soft and pleasant to listen to. No offense to Idina Menzel and her supporters, but her voice is so shrieky! This i observed when i listened to her version of the same. Lea, on the other hand, has the ability to make people fall in love with her serene voice! In addition to her bringing proud and glory to the Philippines, she's one singer anyone should emulate! I love her more and more! Her renditions of the above songs are perfect! Good job!
This is Lea at her best. In her CD, Your Song, this should have been included instead of a stupid song like Poker Song! Then, I can play this song over and over again. Lovely performance!!!!
@punknnerd: Yes. In one of her interviews, Idina said that she had to "rest" her voice from all that belting for awhile. When she gets invited to sing now, it's obvious that the key has been transposed several steps lower than this version of Lea's. Lea did use the original key in her Carnegie concert.
If the key were an issue, then Idina Menzel would NOT have gotten the role (she never had a good-quality singing voice to begin with) as Idina struggled with all the high notes for that role. In fact, playing that role and singing those strenuous songs destroyed her already bad voice so much that in most of her performances post-Broadway, she had to lower the keys THREE half-steps below the original to prevent further damage to her voice! You will never hear her sing again in the original key.
ITA, mdiamse! The quality of Lea's singing is so superb (and is so superior to Idina Menzel's -- as has also been described, Idina sounds like Minnie Mouse) that who really cares what key Lea uses for this song. Bravo, Lea!
Who cares whether the key is a half lower or higher? Each person has his or her own key (there is NO such thing as a "standard" key), plus she's NOT and she WON'T perform it on Broadway, anyway. Her technique and vocal quality are WAAAAAY BETTER than Idina's, whose voice has been described on Youtube as sounding like Alvin's from "Alvin & the Chipmunks"!
i am so sick of her dang why do-sent she just just come to Broadway audition every time she has a concert she sings the hell out of defying gravity she just needs to audition and she will be abel to sing no good deed tooooo!!!!!!
Free energy has been here for a while ,But the Oil companies want these technologies unknown to the masses,Go to LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM and get the blueprints for a genuine magnet motor ,The revolution begins!
@sorafsfd Lea is an amazing singer. Most women who have played Elphaba have completely blown out their voices. I think out of all the untrained belters who kill their voices belting the score 8x/week, Lea would be able to pull it off. However, she's a class act and can do better, IMO.
When Lea Salonga sang DEFYING GRAVITY at Carnegie Hall in 2005, she sang it in the original key that's in the WICKED CD. Here, she sings it 1/2 step lower. To be fair, even Idina Menzel doesn't sing the song live in its original key. The latest clips of Menzel have her singing this song a full minor third down from the original key she sang it in. This show really damaged Menzel's voice.
You just know she's gonna reach those high notes with support and definition :) Prefer her to Idina in a way. It's as though her voice would just soar to you through a theater. Gah, really good!
She would be ab amazing elphaba. She would be mind-blowing,maybe even better than Idina menzel. She should be invited on Glee. Maybe we should all petition for her to be on the show. She would be amazing.
in my opinion she performs it better than idina menzel. I'm not saying Idina isn't good, but Lea just does this so effortlessly unlike idina who sounds like she struggles on the last notes if you listen to her live with this song. Lea has a beautiful, soaring voice. Always loved her.
@motownazn. Actually the lyrics was not altered to make it a solo. The song is actually a solo piece that Elphaba sings in the first parts of Wicked the musical... she then sings a duet version with Glinda in the latter part of the show... so both songs are included in the musical.
She gives me chills. She would make for an amazing Elphaba. Her voice is electrifying WICKED :) Whoooo! Fly this woman to the united states and paint her green. please!
I'm not sure who wrote it but I love the change of the song to make it a solo. I mean, obviously they needed to make it a solo at some point, but that was a good change in the lyrics to make it a solo.
@amihan99 No. Lea just did a Broadway medley during her concert, hence this DG post. But there will be a "Cats" production in Manila this July, 2010 where Lea will play Grizabella. :)
She so sings Defying Gravity better than Idina Menzel. All Lea needs to do is paint herself in green & wear the black dress, cape & hat & she's good to go.
@johnhortaleza i know this is late but a mezzo soprano isnt between alto and soprano its someone who sings high notes than a regular soprano but not alot higher
@julesevnrod ACTUALLY ... a mezzo soprano IS between an alto and soprano. mezzo means medium (i.e. mezzo forte = medium loud). a mezzo soprano is a woman whose vocal range spans from the alto register to the soprano register. in my opinion, i think they are the most versatile of the female vocal ranges. an example of a mezzo in popular music would be sara bareilles or leona lewis.
@darylleonardo really?!?! (not arguing) i honestly diddnt know that. thats not what i was taught, i was taught that mezzo was a higher singer that a soprano then it went to lyrica? then koloratura? i believe.
@julesevnrod nope. lyric, spinto, and coloratura are vocal types. but mezzo is a vocal range. im not sure of the definitions of lyric, spinto and coloratura but i've heard that coloraturas are the sopranos who can jump quickly from note to note. as far as vocal ranges go, from what i know for women it goes from contralto (lowest), alto, mezzo, and soprano (highest).
@motownazn There are plenty who aren't but she IS singing songs from musicals, and it is party of being in a musical its not just music its acting. But she could probably do it without the acting, but i like it better with it personally (:
heya, wicked video, does anyone know what key it is in? or how to find it out? cus my mum has an audition for the theatre and we need to know, would be a great help
It's kind of ridiculous what a thrill this gave me. One of my favorite singers performing two numbers from two of my favorite musicals! I have been wanting Lea to play Elphaba for about as long as I've been a fan of Wicked and this is probably the best job she's ever done with the song.
If ever she does play Elphaba (which I hope she does), those make-up artists would have a hard time trying to make this gorgeous woman look like a wicked witch :)
@xiaolinwudaiwarrior Oh I don't think it would be a problem at all because Elphaba is supposed to beautiful, because in the second act of Wicked, they actually do "glam" her up so to speak, and yes Lea is really beautiful!
She has such control. I really appreciate that she doesn't go nuts with riffs. Her vibrato is perfect! This is by far the best Defying Gravity ever! All that said I do think it should be noted that it is transposed a half step down from the original score. Nevertheless FANTASTIC!
Also the conductors work there at the end was a little iffy...
"As someone told that everyone deserve a chance to FLY!" "To those who grab me, take the message back from me!!!" "I'm flying High, Defying Gravity" Amazing Performance and Stage Presence....Wonderful Character of Elphaba from the versatile Lea Salonga...Wow!!!!
her face and emotions are there and what I love most is her tenacity. She was amazing,, that I couldn't express the things inside my mind whenever I hear her voice... ahhhh I can't get enough of this...
I like how she walked fiercely across the stage at the beginning of Defying Gravity. As well as because of her gorgeous voice, I think that is why I agree with ellz1020- that walk, those mannerisms felt like Elphaba Thropp in every conceivable way.
It is overly true to say that I would go lesbian for Lea Salonga...

It's kind of ridiculous what a thrill this gave me. One of my favorite singers performing two numbers from two of my favorite musicals! I have been wanting Lea to play Elphaba for about as long as I've been a fan of Wicked and this is probably the best job she's ever done with the song.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE how clear her notes are even if she is belting them out!! The last part was totally awesome.

GOOSEBUMPS. wow. there's soo much power in that performance. I wish she could play the role of Elphaba too. MABUHAY KA LEA! ang galing mo!

I like how she walked fiercely across the stage at the beginning of Defying Gravity. As well as because of her gorgeous voice, I think that is why I agree with ellz1020- that walk, those mannerisms felt like Elphaba Thropp in every conceivable way.
LEA SALONGA FOR ELPHIE!
