I had never heard of her but recently read a fawning profile in the New Yorker holding her up as some kind of revolutionary talent. I should have known. A typical noisy indie band with a woman who has added a bit of elementary tapping to her playing. Which is fine, but I think you can't deny that people in general are prepared to accept a certain level of mediocrity in female performers and that doesn't do anyone any favours. And I'm not blaming Stern for this--she's just doing her thing.
People make a big(ger) deal out of it because it's hipsterdom. Her songs are neat and the style is unique, but people throw around the word 'shred' a little too loosely. Being impressed for the artistic merit and the effort applied is great, but being blown away by the technicality is just fooling yourself. Same goes for Zach Hill.
yeah, totally agree with antitommy. Maybe it wouldn't be a big deal in any other situation, but she's using that technique in such a creative and unconventional way. And what's great about marnie is that she is genuinely having fun. She always has a huge smile on her face when she plays.
You really do have to train yourself hard to play as well as she does. I've been working at the same style for about a year, after playing for a year prior to that, and though I'm doing quite well, I'm still not nearly as good at it as she is. A lot of what's impressive is how well she uses it. She writes effective pop songs using techniques usually reserved for very non-pop music.

Someone tell this chick to take up nursing or banking, or anything but her guitar. She reeks!!!
Wow, she can tap and move her pick really, really fast on the same note. Impressive.
