  • I find it ironic that you state "conflict promotes growth", and yet you don't want to entertain any "arguments"? I am new to your site, very interested in learning and eating differently (I do have a PhD), and it seems you have very well-researched material, did you ever consider that perhaps someone else could "promote" growth in you by challenging something you say? I've done much research in my life and education, and I think we can all learn from a healthy, well-backed argument/challenge.

  • @cetteferge

That is why I feel I grow each day and yr as I get conflicted with my research and views!

  • @cetteferge

Not conflict meaning fighting...but more confusion. Yes agree with what you say.

  • Pine Pollen is supposed to increase testostorone.

  • Josh, do you know of any foods that help to increase testosterone? I've heard eggs actually increase estrogen, but that might have to do with the fact that most chickens are fed soy.

  • @jreily88

It is more about reducing inflammation that will increase it...but some say raw shellfish, esp oysters, etc will assist in the process. But they are non-inflamm proteins that are loaded with minerals (esp selenium) that helps to make T3, etc..which will down reg inflamm and regulate test.

  • @joshrubineastwest

Thanks. The only reason why I asked is because I have a very hard time growing facial hair, although that might just be genetics, and when it does grow, it's very scraggly. I don't have any of the symptoms of low testosterone, however if I ever decide I want to increase my body's production of it, I would want to do it as naturally as possible with food and proper exercise, and not necessarily and supplements that probably won't work any way.

  • @joshrubineastwest

Would you say that saturated fat increases testosterone production?

  • Hi Josh, thanks for another thought provoking video! Just one quick question - when you talk about unsaturated fats here are you refering to both mono and poly unsaturated fats?

  • SURTHRIVAL is recommanding COLOSTRUM as an. excellent (perfect ) food.Does

anyone here have an opinion on this subject?

  • @linja1713

I hear that colostrum, which is found in milk I believe, is very good for muscle growth.

  • Great video. I use some nuts and nut butters in my raw food bars and have not had issues with digestion or protein absorption. I'm gonna keep your points in mind when I create some new food bars. Thank you

  • Wait..I'm totally confused..so are you saying omega 3's (fish oil) are not healthy? What about avocados? Are they not mostly full of unsaturated fat?

  • how do u get vegan protein if you have no nuts or seeds? What about canned beans? I am so confused I want to go vegan since I have been dealing with IBS like symptoms mostly a tight abdominal sensation when standing and discomfort when eating for over a year it all started when I took an antibiotic for 3 days for a bladder infection back in late october 2009. I have tried various probiotics but I feel worse the next day and days after I just don't know what to do I am at wits end with my life

  • 50,000 years 98% of humans did NOT eat Coconuts and did eat fish and nuts. So, why NOW we suddenly need saturated fat from coconuts? Would happen if digestive enzymes, probiotics, and other nutritional factors were available. Of course I'm assuming there is an absence of allergic molecules or tainted food sources (going back to the farming process too).

  • Seriously people is eating really this complicated?????? There doesn't ever seem to be a straight answer with any of this.I do enjoy the videos, just seems very complicated and I still have no idea what is healthy to eat.

  • so poly fats are bad, how about mono fats. so far unsaturated fats are the best but whats the deal with monounsaturated? and whats a good snack to have if not nuts?

  • thanks josh, i was having a lot of bloating since i started eatting raw nuts a lot more often. Ive been trying to find the trigger but have been having a lot of trouble and i figured it was somthing else. Never really thought it could be nuts, but ill give it a try

    thanks

  • Lol man I new something was up, my body can't stand nuts & seeds.

  • Fascinating, thanks Josh.

  • hmm, didnt know that. now would the thyroid affect vision in the long run? cause what i saw when i was in native american history class the ones who lived into there 80's some of them would be blind and this was before the introduction of the europeans. what do you think would affect someones vision like that, in a diet perspective

  • still love your format, straight forward information from your perspective, hope you can keep it up.

  • josh, not attacking but just thoughts i would like your thoughts. you said cod liver oil and fish oils arent good but how is it that ancient indians on the west coast and japanese and asian cultures lived very healthy to off these fats?

  • @marcusaydelott

Didn't you just watch the video! According to who they have lived healthy...a book? If you do the research, the asian culture has a high incidence of thyroid issues and liver issues.....which are two of the many organs the unsaturated fats will create issues in right off the get go!

  • @joshrubineastwest

When you say fish oils are bad, does that mean that the fish itself is bad? I checked out Ray Peat's website, and he said that fish is good, as long as it's in moderation and that the ratio of saturated fats to unsaturated fats isn't out of balance.

  • @jreily88 Yeah, you're probably right.

A better option is to stick with the tropical fish. Tropical fish survive in hotter climates, so they contain less of the unstable polyunsaturated fats. I also would recommend shellfish such as oysters and clams.

  • @municipalmutualist

So basically fish like snapper, flounder, or trout, in which all 3 live off the coast of florida, which is a warm climate?

  • @jreily88 I don't know. Ray Peat recommended tropical fish in his interview on PUFAs with Josh Rubin.

  • @joshrubineastwest Yeah. I heard of many cases of liver cancer in China.

  • @marcusaydelott You're correct that empirical evidence suggest that the Japanese live longer than many other nations. There are a lot of variables to consider: Japanese don't consume too much iron; the Japanese do not consume high-fructose corn syrup.

While it's unproven if those above factors completely explain their longevity, there are animal studies which have demonstrated the evils of omega-3 fatty acids. For instance, there's a study that omega-3 fatty acids elevates cancer in dogs.

  • I have one question - are nut butters any better than whole or soaked nuts? I'm thinking you'll say no.....

  • @FoodHoney

The answer is always in the question!

  • @FoodHoney Cacao butter and shea butter are good sources. Search google for "fatty acid composition" and you will find that cacao butter and shea butter are low in polyunsaturated fatty acids.

  • @municipalmutualist thanks for the info, but I was asking about things like cashew butter and almond butter which I use to make raw food snacks and eat on rice cakes along with butter mainly for their protein and flavour. They're also very good to make salad dressings for for things like kale and spinach.

  • Josh, thank you for all the info you share. It always makes me think about things differently and in more detail. I think a lot of people expect too much out of people like yourself on here. I'm just glad for the info and the healing I can do on myself because of great info from people like yourself.

  • great video clip. i love it

  • It's only a fringe group who believe that unsaturated fats are bad. The majority of nutrition scientists say we need these fats.

  • I have been eating almond butter, and snack on almonds, now, I wonder about almond flour, I eat low carb, I will try coconut flour next, not sure, but I was addicted to peanut butter for awhile too..organic- I guess, nut butter is going out of my diet, I have not tried raw butter, I am interested.

  • I've been trying to spread the word about coconut oil, I had taken Enbrel which suppressed my immune system, but it worked to get me out of severe pain due to PA, I knew in advance the many severe side effects from this drug, I was scared to death that I was going to catch the swine flu or pneumonia, I was on Enbrel for 8 weeks,I started 2 tablespoons/ day of coconut oil. I never got sick! Everyone at work came down with the flu, I work in a cubicle, I am healthier with Coconut Oil 1 yr later!

  • Brazil nuts have Zinc and Peanuts have resveratrol. Good bye to those.

  • @adrianwaj Hey, resveratrol is estrogenic. Ray Peat himself did wrote an article arguing against resveratrol supplementation. Please Google "ray peat resveratrol" for more information.

  • this is just for PUFAs right? MUFAs or still okay right? like the MUFAs in butter, beef, etc... Are saturated fats still better than MUFAs?

  • @mickthompsan Beef tallow and mutton tallow are 55% saturated and 40% monounsaturated. Our ancestors ate a lot of beef and mutton fat, so I don't think it's a problem. The main problem is the polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The only other natural sources of saturated fats are coconut oil and palm kernal oil. Palm kernal oil is chemically extracted, so it's not the best option compared to coconut oil, which is expeller pressed.

  • What about SAfflower oil? I have been seeing this being promoted in health food stores.

  • @tweezee1976

    High in Unsaturated fats!

  • @tweezee1976 No. Safflower oil is mostly polyunsaturated. Never use it. It's similar to corn or soy oil. There's a kind of "high-oleic safflower oil" which is relatively low in polyunsaturated fats. But that's not the best option since it may still contain higher amounts of the polyunsaturated fats than normal.

  • Can you recomend any other oil then coconutoil?

  • @bmxion

Palm oil is adequate and of course butter but coconut oil is by far the best because it contains lauric acid and the most amount of saturated fat

  • @gledalac1979 Thanks, I was hoping there would be something growing more local and not the other side of the planet

  • @bmxion

You can get this anywhere! The key is that it is a fruit that is grown in a hot climate as it should be = sat fat!

  • @joshrubineastwest Think I understand what you´re saying now - I appreciate the information!

  • @bmxion

our body temperature is the same whether we are in the tropics or north pole so we need to eat that which suits our body, in this case saturated fat.

  • @bmxion

    Yes....coconut oil!

  • @joshrubineastwest whats the best quality coconut oil? There's an Asian market near my house that sells parachute coconut oil but its stored in a plastic bottle and ships from Asia...is it a good brand? anyone heard of it?

  • @bmxion

Get a big gallon of coconut oil and use it religiously

  • @bmxion Try clarified butter (ghee)

  • @bmxion @mickthompsan @jreily88 @marcusaydelott Tallow is about 4% polyunsaturated fatty acids. So it's safe. Both beef and sheep tallow are good sources.

Macadamia nut oil is also safe. It's about 2% polyunsaturated acids. But it's expensive.

    But don't use lard, as it's 10%.

You don't need any supplemental omega-3s or fish, since coconut oil and tallow contains just the tiny amount that we need. But fish in moderation won't hurt if you balance it with more saturated fats.

  • @municipalmutualist Thank you very much for the info:)!

  • @bmxion You're welcome!

  • @bmxion Tallow, butter/ghee, macadamia nut oil. Search Google for "fatty acid profiles" to find a list of oils which are acceptable and unacceptable.

  • Does Almounds count as nuts and does beans and peas and beans count as seeds ??

  • Hi Josh

What about eating Salmon.... same problem??

  • @moveYouTV

Salmon is ok if cooked in butter or coconut oil but don't refreeze it

  • @gledalac1979

    Disagree...no salmon at all.

  • @joshrubineastwest

we can disagree for now I guess. Do you see any reason to eat any fish occasionally as long as it's cooked in butter/coconut oil?

You know that there are plenty of protagonists saying that fish eating improves brain function, life expectancy etc.. They say that Japan and Scandinavia subsist on fish and have higher quality of life.

  • @gledalac1979

Yes white fish is ok. Of course they do, but why is our society getting worse and my business growing with all this science, supps, etc!?

  • @joshrubineastwest

maybe because all the disinformation from the mainstream media and medical establishment ?

I know that I got way healthier since I stopped listening to media and going to the doctors.

  • @joshrubineastwest

ok , I watched some more of your videos and just over a year ago you were saying that fish and cod liver oils were "great" for health especially for raising testosterone. Did you just have an epiphany on this issue within the last year ? How do you go from recommending these isolated fish oils to forbidding entire whole fish ?

  • @gledalac1979

    As we learn we grow!

  • @moveYouTV I recommend tropical fish or shell fish like oysters. But if you eat Salmon, then please cooked it with saturated fats such coconut oil, butter or tallow, The saturated fats will protect the unsaturated fats in your Salmon from becoming peroxidized.

  • Once you get passed the mind fuck of it all, it really does make perfect simple sense. But fruits - don't they too produce natural deterrents to protect themselves from being eaten which might cause mal digestive issues in humans also?? I mean why would fruits be any less evolved than seeds nuts or leafy greens?

  • @loveNcolor I agree.

  • @loveNcolor The fruits which I would avoid are grapes, tomatoes, and grapefruit, because they're estrogenic. I would also avoid apples because it has pectin. And bananas which has too much tryptophan. There is a study in which animals develop cancer if they eat too much bananas. And finally, pears and strawberries are goitrogenic.

Ray Peat recommends citrus fruits and melons.

  • I am not sure if I am understand correctly, are you saying fish has negative health benefits? Or olive oil? These things are both high in unsaturated fatty acids as far as I know and always mentioned as some of the "most healthy" foods.

Perhaps you are talking about having some sort of balance between saturated and unsaturated, or are you saying that any amount of unsaturated fats only produce negative effects in the body?

  • @BMoney01234

Yes I am saying Salmon and olive oil are unhealthy. Yes any amount will create a stress reaction in the body as they oxidize in the presence of oxygen and heat...which facilitates what I talked about above plus much more!

  • @joshrubineastwest

So are saturated fats the only type of fats we should be eating? I'm just confused on what foods we should be eating to get omega 3s, as the only saturated fat food that contains them, that I know of, is grass fed beef.

  • @jreily88

Saturated fats should be majority of the fat content followed closely by monounsaturates and polyunsaturates way behind. It should resemble the content of mothers milk which is 55% saturated, 40% monounsaturated and only 5% monounsaturated. Omega 3 should be below 1% and always taken with saturated fat and vitamin E to protect it because it is the most reactive oil

  • @jreily88

5% for polyunsaturated I am sorry and that would be for Omega 3,6 and arachidonic acid put together

  • @BMoney01234

I'm having a hard time understanding as well. I know we need to have saturated fats in our diet, but are they the only ones? Yes, unsaturated fats can cause many health problems because they are unstable at high temperatures, but even Ray Peat said that olive oil is a good choice as far as unsaturated fats go.

  • I totally agree with dbztiki.

    Excellent Video....From start to finish.

  • Is the book you were referring to by Ray Peat called Generative Energy?

  • @stinkeroftheyear

I gave two book recs, RAy has about 6 and 100's of articles to view!

  • Dude you need to write a book. Seriously, I'd buy it.

  • @dbztiki

Thanks, but not in the cards right now. Working on some small audio and video programs, webinars, etc.
