  • I think it's Dm7, Am7, Bb/D. There're a couple of passing chords between the Am7 and the Bb/D, pretty sure those are C7 and C#7. Could be wrong though obviously.

  • John Mayer has this amazing ability to play blues patterns on his strat that you tend to hear only on a piano - and he makes it sound like a Fender Rhodes! (check out Bold as Love on Continuum, the "quiet bit" in his solo)

  • i think its a kind of G7 mixolydian bass stuff. sounds like G7 Am7 and Dm7 to me. we need an expert on this PLEASE. i'd like to take a closer look on that. i'm kinda bad with notes and names of chords :X

  • anyone know what chords he vamping on?? seems like E to A to G

anyone? jsut wondering not knew my gutiar andthat sounds sweet

  • Its the perfect guitar !!!!!

  • This video has all the classic traits of the classic John Mayer Youtube Production. 240p? check... cameraman making awestruck comments? check... total views impossible to emulate? check... Total length barely enough to even take in the awesomeness? check... Thats about it...

  • Hey Tomo, You gave me some advice quite a while ago.. I used it in my practice and got alot better (im not advertising my page. i have no current vids up)! Anyway i worked on guitar and vocals and now i'm working with some big dogs in the industry. Thanks!

  • What Pickups does John use?

  • hahahaha "its the perfect R&B guitar" haha what a man!

  • is that a vintage fender amp he plays through or a modern version with stock tubes etc ??

  • @2220Blues lol, to be honest the guitar does sound warmer when less laquer is applied.. not to say laquer makes it sound horrible, but it's a known fact that less laquer = warmer guitar sound. the sound doesn't just come from the pickups, the strings, or how you pluck them; or else there would be no point in putting that much work into the guitar itself. it doesn't matter if it's an acoustic or not, the sound resinates through the guitar.. so less laquer makes it sound warmer; all to be said.

  • @2220Blues Like John my relic has become my main guitar for the same artistic reasons: It gives me freedom, great different tone that resonates from my amp, and it works for visual branding. You become associated with that instrument because it melds to your playing (the paint, the neck all wear the more you play, at a faster rate than a normal guitar, an this effects the sound much more).

  • @2220Blues That combined with the French Poly neck John has on the "black one" the "entire" guitar resonates when you play a note. It quite litterally, can ring for days. That's the difference between guitars like that. I personally live in Dallas, TX and am a Texas Musician. Many of my friends were friends with the Vaughan's and are professional Guitar Techs. The best in the biz. I have a relic'd strat that was made with exactly the same processes as "B1". *not same pickups and wood etc.

  • @2220Blues Dude I highly disagree. There are two main things in being a musician. The first being how you play. The majority of your tone comes from how you touch the neck with your hands. The second is what you use; this being a great guitar. The wood breathing "thing" is the vintage guitar thing. That's why old guitars sound so good because the laquer doesnt stop the guitar from getting it's natural sound out from the wood.

  • @2220Blues and you obviously didn't watch the part 2 video if you say john mayer doesn't have his own style. don't be so ignorant when it comes to music.

  • Yo I am a musician stuck in my 5th year of pharmacy school right now because I made the wrong choice between medicine and music after high school, but all I'm sayin' is that jazz, drums, guitar, and music are my real passions and someday I'm gonna finally follow the dream and go back to school to study music. I'm glad I finally realized what my real life goal is. Just sayin'.

  • @2220Blues I'm not sure who's right, but watch this video on john's black1 and how it was made. he mentions why he relic'd the guitar and it was to help it resonate. there's also a part 2

    /watch?v=4g7J9q8ePkg&feature=related

  • hey how come his tone is so much warmer in this vid and than your blues jam vid,??

im really confused.. did he switch amps in between>?

  • @TheBigdummi its like you and him switched amps.. ya know?

  • TOMO I JUST GOT IN BERKLEE HOPE TO LEARN FROM YOU AGAIN!!! :D

  • @jingwah Thank you.

  • what does he mean perfect R'n'B guitar? can anyone elaborate?

  • @MrUnseenBucket Since John has gotten his guitar relic'd it allows the wood to breathe. Normally on a guitar, there is so much paint, clear coat and other chemicals on top of the guitar it doesn't resonate like it's supposed to. Once you remove the layers of garbage from the natural wood of the gutar, the entire guitar resonates uniquely depending on what type of wood it is, how it was done etc. That's why everyone wants a beat up guitar. It's really a Texas thing that is starting to catch on.

  • @mitchakotaco ummm bull.

  • I'm sick of everyone asking for tabs for cool stuff, expecting other people to do their work for them. If you want to learn the jam, then learn it yourself.

  • do you know the specs for his black relic? strat type? pickups?

  • @GreenwichboyNYC SRV Tuner :D:D

  • It's the perfect guitar!

  • The only way to get treated fairly at Berklee is if you are a valuable asset to their advertising campaign. Then will will be treated with absolute favoritism.

  • Anyone know the tabs for what John is playing in this vid?

  • @Boss44221 Figure it out. Sounds like Dm7 and G7...fool around with them

  • whats that hoodie he is wearing?

  • @valinhus douche hoodie

  • @Whatisthescore hahaha.. seriously man! does anybody know?!

  • @valinhus Loopwheeler.

  • i want those amp settings! wow his tone is just sick.

  • haha Berklee is a scam

  • @Whatisthescore Please, enlighten us.

  • Hey man, do you know the tone on the amp. I have one myself and love the tone. also how do I get a warm tone with out it being really bassy on the lower strings? Please respond :) Thanks

  • @OwensMusic1 John was using a Fender Hot Rod. Guitar, pickups (set lower on lower strings side) touch!

    Tomo

  • Tomo, is it hard to get into berklee? And what would I have to know in order to get in?

  • @xEasySnipesx two things. Love & Hard work. If you have your passion... Great!

    Tomo

  • @xEasySnipesx money

  • what type of strat is it? i love it.

  • this sounds like all blues by miles davis

  • Tomo, were you John's teacher at Berklee?

  • Hi Tomo-you mentioned bare knuckle pickups-which ones do you prefer from their strat sets for the closest to this John Mayer black strat tone?

    thanks

  • I'm going to this school in the fall!!! Check out my channel to hear my music!

  • Hey Tomo is John gonna be realeasing his replica models of the Black One? He put up a youtube video with his own account and said that he gave it to Fender custom shop to make one, but he didn't say when.

  • @Cbluesrocker Fenders making to versions, one cheaper which is not reliced and one "exact copy". The cheaper one has the same specs as the old mayer signature strat and the only difference between them is just color and tuners.. The cheap version will be out 2 weeks i think.. for more information google a forum called "my stupid mouth" and go into the "musician" part of the forum

  • what are the frets like on this guitar? are they the same as on his regular signature?

  • @jkodee Fender is producing two new mayer strats which both are copies of his main guitar..both of them are supposed to be really close to mayers and the cheapest one got the excact same specs as the usual signature.. based of off this i would guess mayers strat has the same frets as fender good ol' sig

  • is this a good blues beginner amp or blues junior? tomo what amp did john start out with? thanks :)

  • Love it=) if anybody has time id appriciate them checking out the two vids i have on my channel

  • Hey Mr, Fujita. I was wondering if you've seen/heard the jazzy cat pups from KleinPickups(dot)com? I, like millions of other guitarists, am trying to get a tone similar to John's. I know he's let you play on his black one before, so I was hoping you could provide some input cuz I was thinking of grabbing a set. If you've hadn't seen em, there's a vid on youtube. Cheers!!

  • @godssonn Basically, if you really imitate how John plays his guitar, it could sounds very similar to John Mayer's tone. Personally I really like the Raw Vintage 60s set. I order my set (Tomo set?) My front pickup is lower like real vintage start or Vintage Duo Sonics. I get so many questions about JM 's Black One. Another pickups similar to...Bare Knuckle pickups from England.

    Tomo

  • i love john mayer..his music inspired me alot...;)

  • this is his new signature guitar thats gonna come out soon

  • Its one of rory gallagher's signature guitars that he made his

  • @acousticrythm3 He actually copied the Srv Strat...

  • what kind of Stratocaster is that? Or is it one he's set up on his own; combining different parts?

  • @osubeavs2112 its his own Fender Custom Shop guitar that he built. It was relic'd to look like SRV's guitar. as far as pickups i have no idea if anybody can help me out that would be great

  • they are big dippers his sig pickups

  • Fender Big Dipper Pickups

  • I think it's a srv signature

  • Oh man. That is a riff.

  • hahaha wat was dat, all blues? sorta sounded like it

  • Just i iV V- triads riff, could be any tune. Very popular moves.

    Tomo

  • @TomoFujitaMusic so its a minor pentatonic? or major? i honestly cant seem to understand this for some reason..

  • Tomo, do you think john is using his tones controls rolled down a bit in this video? or is it just the pickups wich sound so mellow by themselves?

  • I don't know. If you pick a bit softer (but w/ good intensity_, it will make your tone warmer. If you practice with good tube amp, like Fender black face ... then if you know how vintage RCA 12AX7... you can get that kind of tone. You have to do your home work!

    Tomo

  • @TomoFujitaMusic

    I like This Riff!!!

I think that the Finger picking Style that he is doing on this Riff is also a good factor to have a warmer Sound

    Walterfunk

  • someone please tab thiss!! e-blues is not tabbed like this! and then send it to me

  • * i mean all blues*

  • One of my students plays really great... so I will post...

    Tomo

  • figure it out by ear, its the only way man!

  • @bimwopbarn I've already done so.. I feel like im missing something and i cant figure it out.. more specifically the thumbs i think i should be playing more bass. The way i play is ok but i would like to sound moderately close to this

  • NOO! I cant see wich pickup he's using! neck maybe?

  • @chuecco yeah that was definitely just the neck position

  • Mostly front & middle.

    Tomo

  • did he fucked up the guitar himself, or do you buy them that way?

  • No he didnt mess it up to look like that. FENDER most likely did that. As i first saw him use this in about 2004. Its a custom shop strat but the wear is almost identical to SRV's number one wear for some weird reason. and no its not by coincidence. Over the years, more wear came naturally but the overall wear was made to look like that. they call them RELICS. Kind of cool but in a lot of ways its not. Strats look best when they have natural wear from YOURSELF. Its like watching a baby grow up

  • I figured most of this lick out and it's a very good exercise to get your thumb moving as John's does to 'simulate' bass.

  • Cannot stop replaying this video.

  • Cool!

    Tomo

  • so lucky

  • i wish i could get that warmth out of my guitar! it's probably the amp...

  • I think he is using a Hot Rod Deluxe.

  • Yes.

    Tomo

  • The guitar got really nice cut through tone. How he plays.. makes warmer tone. So you can practice, practice!

    Tomo

  • @futbol1122 it was just a little hod rod deluxe. i have the same amp, and similar guitar.

    its probably the fingers.

  • @futbol1122 its the touch.

  • Do you practice your guitar with the amp?

    Tomo

  • is there in way you (or someone else) could tab this out or give the chords he uses?... pretty stellar groove

  • Pretty easy just listen. I figured it out that way.

  • Tomo, what p/u selection was he using for this clip?

  • im going to guess with neck/middle.

but there is a possiblity that its just on the neck with the tone knob turned a bit down

  • Maybe middle? He was changing his pick ups to show me how .... His guitar got really nice middle pickup sound too. Front too...

    Tomo

  • I really like the dark tone!

  • what is the brand of that leather jacket with the flap???!

  • i would hazard a guess at belstaff...

  • Yes, and the jeans and sneakers? :-)))))

  • What guitar is that?

  • black relic strat.

  • well fender used to coat their guitars in nitroglycerine or "nitro" and it doesnt take long to wear through it at all but nowdays they coat them in polyurethane. much much harder to wear down

  • nitrocellulose lol

  • yeah! somethin like that haha

  • That's all right. Communication! You are doing great!

    Tomo

  • nitrocellulose is the name of the lacquer, nitroglycerin is a key component in TNT, although nitrocellulose is highly flammable

  • and thats what makes these old guitars the bomb....... damn...sorry thats a terrible joke sorry dudes lol

  • try nitrocellulose.

  • nitroglycerin is an explosive and a heart medicine, you're thinking of nitrocellulose laquer

  • that guitar sounds great.

  • this is too short MORE!

  • he may not be using his boutique two-rock but with a guitarist such as john, he can make any amp sounds worth buying.

  • I heard they are custom wound to his specs but not Big dippers. So who knows. I also heard that they are just out of a very old strat (from like 60's).

I can't remember which came from the legit source

  • W ell I heard they are hand wound by the devil him self... this guy was a ligit source.

  • na i was reading on the fender forums that he wanted to see how fenders were made so he went down to the factory and they made him make his own and they just told him how to do it. And this is what he made.

  • Yeah I have since read that, I was involved in that conversation.

  • does anyone know about how much the NOS version will cost?

  • i'm guessing like all the other artist series...1.5k-2k

  • you are correct (for the most part). for more information regarding The Black One Project, visit Fender's community forum, where Mike Eldred and myself will answer questions you all have in the "Ask Mike Eldred" section.

  • but theres only 83 of them..which means price is gonna be pretty expensive

  • theres only 83 custom shop

but unlimited NOS with same pickups so those will be 1-2k

  • what does NOS mean ?

  • I think its a kind of paint for guitars that gets worn down a lot easier than what they usually use.

  • NOS stands for "new old stock" so if you are talking about a guitar, it means that the guitar is a model from past years but has not been played since it was built.

  • great!!

  • I want his skill, his guitar, and his jacket!!

  • Comment removed

  • oh my god lol

  • Somewhere i heard that the pups in this are Pete Biloft vintage vibe's.

  • what is he playing exactly?

  • what kind of pick ups does he have on this guitar?

  • I would rather scoop my eyeballs out than be in that room.

  • yeah i would really love that sound, and i definitely won't be able to afford the guitar. does anyone know its pickups?

  • Big dipper, i think. Designed by mayer and fender and are put in the john mayer signatures

  • dont thing so

  • he's got his own super low-output pickup in this guitar. It's not a big dipper.

  • You sure about that. I thought they were his Signature Big Dipper's.. 'Cause fender is working on retailing them.

  • No he put those in his cypriss mika signature strat.

  • does anyone know what pickups are on this guitar? Doesnt sound like his big dippers? Tomo, i contacted you a couple of months ago, you answered but, but not about that point of the question. You said you know whats on it, but can you say it to me? You can PM me if u desire. Thanks. good luck

  • I owe so many messages.... I will response each one when I have a chance.

    Tomo

  • Cool pickup!

    Tomo

  • His Jacket is too cool for john! ;)

  • john mayer's strat has similar srv relic...nice tone ...

  • what is he playing there?

  • All Blues from Miles Davis

  • Oh yeah!! Miles rules!!

  • are you sure?

  • yes

  • hey tomo want to teach me haha

  • This is All Blues right? I think it is.

  • John has a multitude of Two Rocks and Dumbles... I've seen him use a Two Rock CRS, a Sterling Signature (based on a Dumble Steel Strings Slinger; John owns one of those as well), and of course his signature Two Rock. He uses these in conjunction with a Dumble ODS most of the time. He also utilizes a Fender Vibroverb '64 RI....

  • what year is it?

  • Fucking RIGHT it's the perfect R&B guitar. And on the subject of tone hunting, I'm not a big Mayer gear-hunter but I have a feeling he uses vintage Fender amps. All I can say is with your cleans for this type of music, boost your mids, slap on a healthy amount of reverb and get dynamic in your picking. Use fingers and pick like he does for your thirds, and slap those octave power chords.

  • he uses Two Rock amps, they're really effing nice

  • Ironically, John uses Two-Rock amps (like a dark, but spunky fender) and SCOOPS his mids.

  • I really liked that guitar. He almost put that Black strat into my gig bag. Because we both had same gig bag.

    Tomo

  • haha that would've been hilarious :)

  • haha imagine what would have happened LOL

  • It almost happened... but I caught it...

    Tomo

  • ahhaha that strat is soo sickk omg..

  • hHahAHa

    Everyone would love that confusion!

  • Which?

    Tomo

  • Tomo said: I really liked that guitar. He almost put that Black strat into my gig bag. Because we both had same gig bag.

Thats why I said that everyone would love that Confusion

    =)

    Walterfunk

  • well you can hear the tone is in the fingers for some part as he uses a "cheap" fender hotrod in this vid and not some boutique two rock

  • Tom, can you please tell me how to get that tone?!

  • hey man you gotta figure it out yourself

    thats the whole point

    you gotta go tone hunting

it might take days, or months

but when you finally get it

its so beautiful and worth the work

  • im not sure but i like playing mayers tunes with the low at around 8, middle around 3.7, high around 3.7.

and then whatever pedals you have just fool around with the tones of them. my blues driver is always around inbetween 12 oclock and 9oclock.

  • his thumbs are what you gotta watch, incredible bass lines.

  • I've got the hot rod deluxe, now i just need to save up for the relic strat...

  • My HR doesn't sound like that... ;-)

  • How do you set your amp? How do you play? Yes, you can! Try to find the way to make your guitar sing well. Do you like blues? Have you ever listened B.B. King's "Blues is king" ? Any Earl Hooker? Albert Collins? Albert King? ...etc.
