I travelled to Borobodur from Jogja by local bus. It's 42k's north, and takes about 1.5 hours. It's can also be accessed from Solo, across the col(low point) between Mt. Merbabu and Mt. Merapi.
Yes they're Javanese. Some of these traditional dances are performed by 'professionals', others such as the 'trance-dancing' are done by everyday local guys. There's no alcohol allowed due to Islamic restrictions, so I think they get into these trances as a way of getting off their face.

Where is this relative to Jogja or Solo? Are these Javanese? Could you give more info?
