I remember staying up on Saturday night to watch ICW. I got to meet Macho Man and he was a great guy. Nothing like the character he played. Saw him wrestle in high school gyms and other places in front of 100-200 people tops. I still have an ICW bumper sticker and calendar from this promotion. Rest in peace Macho Man.
Ole Anderson took on Randy at the old TBS studio in Atlanta. Afterwards, he said, "They ought to name (Angelo) Poffo's kid 'Savage.' He sure as hell wrestled like one." That's how he got the name.
It will bring you to the ICW Poffo website compiled to chronicle The Poffo's independent wrestling promotion in the mid south from 1979- 1985 .
Tons of ads for house shows ( over 700 on the site) . Pictures of the Macho Man from high school; match listings Lanny and Randy bouts from Phil Goldens All Star Wrestling from 1973.Pictures of Randy's great wardrobe .This is the most comprehensive site dedicated to the Poffo's .
thanks alot for the link man. i love randy, lanny, and angelo as well, and quit watching wrestling after about 2002, not because i was no longer entertained, but because i realized that there could never possibly be a wrestler any better than the macho man. great stuff.
Does anyone have, or even remember seeing, the ICW show where Ronnie gets supposedly injected with something that makes him foam at the mouth and lose his match that week?
Pay no mind to the drunken Frenchman behind the curtain! He's just another smark with a big mouth and a chip on his shoulder. Savage actually IS Lanny Poffo, but from another dimension! Through the videoscope, yeah...
guess that sort of thing happened all the time in ICW...judging by the announcer's epic no-sell. "Ah hell, Randy's always jumping on people, why should I try to sell extra for that crazy sumbitch..."
Hard to believe Garvin would eventually win the NWA title (back when the NWA title meant something). His stepson (Terry) had more charisma and talent than he ever did and the best he got was being a member of the Freebirds (vol. 2)
Garvin as NWA champ was almost if not more pathetic than Tommy Rich. He won the belt, took a month or two off then had a match against Flair and lost it.
It's still fun to watch these old tapes knowing what we know now and seeing the evolution of the guys.
You are kinda both right. RowdyRodimus was saying Terry Garvin was a member of the Freebrids which, as you pointed out, is incorrect as it was Jimmy. However, in real life, though billed as his brother, Ron was actually Jimmy's step-dad. (Terry, though also billed as a brother was actually related to neither)
I love how the crowd doesn't respond at all to the expose, and then the commentator just stands calmly as two of the top wrestlers in the territory are brawling at his feet.

This was actually pretty taboo at the time, calling a wrestler by his real name. It was an angle, sure, but angles like that were extremely rare for a long, long time. Good find.
i met ronnie garvin about 7 years ago....he was flying a DC-3 for a charter company out of south carolina....he seemed like a pretty nice dude, wish i would've got his autograph...
I remember watching this on Saturday morning back in the day. The description is exactly right---these kind of angles were unheard of at that time. Memphis Wrestling had some good ones at that time, too, stuff that you would never see from some of the bigger promotions.
This is why I loved wrestling as a kid. Exciting as hell. Ronnie Garvin and Leaping Lanny totally kicked ass.
My family moved around the time of all the speculation of who "The Best" was (a mysterious masked wrestler). So we didn't get that channel anymore, WTVQ 62. Anyone know if he was ever unmasked and his identity revealed?
looking at Rugged Ronnie back then as now...I you think about it, He didn't even resemble the way he did in the NWA...I used to think that he and Sting looked an awful lot alike...It was the Blonde flat top I think...
Big revalation we all knew randy savage brother was the poet, then the genius lanny poffo. leaping lanny poffo. My favorite memory of savage is when he took the bell to ricky steamboat's throat.
The southern style was known for being very stiff anyway, but Lanny and Randy being brothers and their dad being the mizer angelo poffo i say they were taught to be stiff
No, that was one of his phony "brothers" along with Jimmy. The guy in question got into serious harassment trouble as a WWF employee. It wasn't Ronnie.
Terry Garvin used to be with them,(Ronnie and Jimmy) and he was the wrestler that was Gay and got in trouble with the then WWF. I do believe he has passed. Terry Garvin and Ronnie Garvin were both Canadian as well.
I remember this promotion. It had a lot of future stars (Randy Savage, Leaping Lanny, Pistol Pez Whatley, Bob Orton, Ronnie Garvin), but my favorites were a tag team known as the "Convertable Blondes" and a masked wrestler known as "The Miser" who was later outed as Angelo Poffo, Randy and Leaping Lanny's dad. I also remember an episode where Angelo Poffo did sit-ups for the entire length of the program. Truly classic stuff.
The promo was great. The end was best. When Savage jumps Garvin and they Hammer each other and the announcer stands there calm as can be as says lets have a commercial break LOL too funny.
For a former baseball player, Randy Savage did a lot better than Pete Rose in wrestling. But Savage is a nut abd Ronnie Garvin was born in MOntreal, Quebec indeed.
