There are laws that insist the monarch doesn't have certain powers (such as power to get rid of laws on his/her own whim), that were given Royal Assent, but not a single law removes the status of the monarch as ruler of the country. Not a single law can pass without her assent. Not one.

Interesting video. In theory I am a republican, as no one should have heredity rights such as the monarchy do. However I accept that in practice there is not much difference with the state of affairs evolved as they are today, and unless a different system was very carefully created it would be no better. Certainly I agree that QE2 has been a good head of state. Still, eventually I think Britain will become a republic.

@mak34237 Well it is not "unthinkable". There are many countries that work very well as republics. The USA is the only country in the world which has a secular constitution by law and by decree. I don't see why Anglicanism should be the official religion of my country and my taxes should be diverted for it. A republic is the ultimate way forward, but going along with the adage, "don't fix it if it isn't broken" I am in no hurry to see the monarchy go at present. One day it'll happen though.

@mak34237 The United Kingdom will never become an empire in the sense it was before ever again. Those days are well and truly gone. The world is changed. In the past 20 centuries all but 3 have seen China as the world's largest economy, a position it will soon resume again. Our best hope is to form a huge EU-US trading block and stick together, which is what is happening already. Dreams of a revived empire are an anachronistic fantasy. What we can say about the former British empire though is...

@mak34237 that although Britain exited superpower status sometime during the Second World War. Many countries have had empires but the difference between all of these experiences of world leadership was that only one country would leave its language to the world as the new Latin (and this time "the world" means the world and not the known world) leaving the future global order permanently in its remnants.

@kanenkitten then why are British troops still there?, Iraq has a government and should be allowed to run their own country... there are no wmd's... no excuses except for the much needed oil... same thing happening in Libya now. If she has the power then she should stop it completely.

To put it simply, the queen is a dictator who happens to shadow the prime minister, as a matter of tradition. There is no sense in which she both posesses the right to declare war and lacks the right to raise taxes.

IOW the queen has theoretical absolute power. You can't then put a practical restriction on theoretical power which is already practically forbidden.

This is all nonsense. It doesn't make sense to say she has limited theoretical powers, because the limitation of her absolute power is itself theoretical. Insofar as the queen's power is absolute, it is theoretical. Insofar as the queen's power is practical, it is almost nought.
